Haven't been at this long. I am looking for a couple of bows right now but not sure if they are the "Holy Grail". I own 1959 Grizzly, Alaskan, and Kodiak Specials all at 48#'s. Now that I have (by accident) happened upon those I want to finish out the 1959 suite with a Kodiak and Polar both at 48#'s.
Then I have my eye out for a Wellman Archery Bow. I have heard good things about them, but I am looking for one of these largely because they were made about 20min from where we live and it's a piece of local history.
After I have been at this a few more years I might better know what the true holy grail bow is for me.

KENNY I know I love my 59 grizz and i know when Rich gets it done I will love it even more. BUT My Dryad TD longbow Orion is still the one I grab first.. The bow I miss and would love to find and get back was a early Jim Neaves longbow. Not selway or his new bow a D shape bow. But I loved it and like a dummy I sold it.<><

An original Howard Hill Longbow in very nice condition would certainly be a sweet one to own!!

This is a great thread.
I have sold one bow as a result of it, and have interest in two more.

Are you going to the TBG Banquet in August?
"Life is not a journey to the grave with the
intention of arriving safely in a well
preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside
thoroughly used up, totally worn out, with
bible in hand and loudly proclaim...WOW...What
a Ride!!!"
I LIKE THAT :wavey:

MICHAEL
You have great ambitions for those 55# limbs. If you would like, I can lend you the 70# limbs I have for that trip.
I know 55# can do the job, and there have probably been many Moose downed woth 55# or less, but the 15 extra lbs would give you a bit of an edge.
If I am not mistaken, 70# was Papa Beaars weight of choice for his larger big game animals.
Let me know if you want to borrow them.
-
I'm always a fan of the offbeat designs from the past. The Howatt Eldorado with offset handle is high on my list. If I don't find one for sale, I will probably build a modern interpretation of it.
One of the the Browning folding bows in a target length and weight is high on my list too.
Awhile back, I picked up a late 60's Sabo SSR (with the shoot through riser and dual stabilizers). It requires more tools to adjust than a modern compound but I love it anyway. It is an excellent shooting bow.

-
The bow The Green Arrow shoots in the comics, the one that can shoot four arrows at a time and hit all the things he is aiming at....
-
A mint 1969 Super Kodiak. Good place to start anyway.
-
I'm still workin' on gettin' a TD,...more a shooter than collector, would settle for a mag riser for starters to hunt with maybe, if I could find one that didn't go for a ridiculous price, like just happened again...
Fantastic site...just found it a couple days ago & have been reading almost non-stop...SO MUCH information!!!...the topics answer a bunch of questions I've been wondering about...which reminds me..........
back to the info......rvdv
-
Ben Tstic
Glad you are enjoying the site.
One point of clarrification...there is no such thing as a "rediculous price"
When asked what a particular bow is worth, we always say "they are worth what someone will pay for them...no more, no less".
A bows value is determined by a multitide of factors. The model, condition, and other factors, but mostly what an individual is willing to pay. All other factors set aside, what it is worth to an individual is the real factor.
If you have something I want, you set your price. If I want it that bad, I step up. If not, I walk away. Very simple.
I hope you continue to hang out here, learn, and contribute. Believe it or not, there are things that many of us here can learn from you.
-
Thanks to Felix, I have great looking Type 1 1970
B-1211, refinished by bowdoc.
-
Barry,I am happy you appreciate it my friend.
-
Felix, keep the faith, there is LH Type 1 out there just waiting to be found, and it will be worth the wait. There are a lot of great bows mentioned here, but none with more history than the one Fred carried for so many years.
-
HUD
Unless it is the actual bows carried by Saxon Pope of Art Young...better than that...Ishi!!
-
Jerry Pierce Choctaw and the Jack Howard Target Supreme and original early St Charles Thunderbird
-
JIM
You are welcomed to the other two, but I got dibs on the Target Supreme.
If I were not so technologically challenged, I have pictures I could post.
-
Does it actually exist or is there just a photo of one. Do you know anything about it. Jim
-
Oh, it exists. Or at least it did. I have a post card that Jack put out showing different views of the Supreme and his original Gamemaster.
The supreme was actually a target weight Gamemaster with extra rosewood added on the back and the belly side of the riser. It was made in such a way that you used the high points of the rosewood caps to mount a sight.
If someone will send me an e-mail to
[email protected]
I will e-mail a picture that you can post here.
I am technologically challenged and never learned to use PhotoBucket.
-
For me it's just one bow...an original 1953 St. Charles Thunderbird.
-
BROCK
Today I picked up a "perfect Cobra II" It may be kind of light at 36# but you did not specify a weight.
This is out of the box new condition.
-
Jack,
Agreed. I have seen bows by Pope, Young and Thompson but never for sale. It would be something to find one of their bows that no one knew about, or one by Ishi, Grumley, Chester Stevenson, or Howard Hill. Considering how easily those old bows are damaged, it would have be one stored in an air conditioned vault.
-
Hey...ya never know

I just got a 76 Bear Super Mag 48" 85# at 28". It was new-in-the-box after all these years. Awesome!
-
the holy grail was never found?
I'll stick with something I can get my hand on, next is a Paul shafer silvertip, original in a light shootable weight, then a Moriah, then a bear paw, then a toelke, each one is the holy grail until I get it. When done I will have a bow from all the local bowyers.

I think a 1960 Kodiak like traps' would be a pretty great bow to aspire to...along with a 59' Kodiak of course. I also have been watching for a 63' dogleg, 50# range....cuz' it is the year I was born! I just love bows....
-
Right now mine would be a '58 Kodiak 56" to complete the set.
Then I would start looking for the rest of the '58 specials.
Almost forgot I would like to have a '58 Black Widow too!
-
JACKDRAW
I have two 50# doglegs and a 45# if you are interested.
-
I'd like to have a 1958 Bushmaster
-
1959 Kodiak Maple Window is mine.
-
59 Hoyt Pro Hunter 47# BOWDOC magic applied. Its on my wall way too pretty to shoot! Guess I need another.
-
Minty '59 Grizz
-
Gonna have to modify my list a little:
Type I B RH (No Sight)
1997 Wood B RH (All Blonde Handle with No Stripe)
1963 Dogleg K-Mag (Type I or II)
-
Old Skool
Don't even think about stringin', much less shootin', the Type I K Mag

Kelly
Can you scan and post the pics of the Target Supreme I sent you
I think some here would like to see it.
-
Sorry Jack, don't have any way to scan it. Wder if todays digital cameras could take a clos-up of the postcard?
Oh by the way, found my original Supreme postcard so passed along the one you sent to another Jet fan.
-
Glad you passed it on. My reproduction was not nearly as good as the original.
-
Here is the Jack Howard Supreme target model recurve.
Jack used his standard Gamaster form, different handle wood, different color plastic in the handle and then added ovrlays.
If anyone knows of the existance of one of these bows many of us Howard fans would love to see it.
-
Thanks for posting kelly
I have to correct you on one point though. Many of us Howard fan would "kill to own it".
In the picture, the two on the right are the original Gamemaster. As Kelly said, it is the base model for the Target Supreme. Looking at the target bow you can see the gamemaster in there.
So you see...it does exist...or at least it did.
Kelly...is that red section plastic, or is it African Vermillion?
-
The red section is plastic-same as the black section is plastic. Suspect it had the steel rod insert, too.
Believe the wood section is the dark colored, highly figured Brazilian rosewood. The Supreme also differs from the Gamemaster by having white glass on both sides of limbs.
My guess if there is actually a Supreme in existance it would be somewhere in California for that state was loaded with target archers back in the early 1960's, when I suspect this model was made.
Wonder if Fred Carty from Vermont ever owned or saw one?
-
I lost Freds contact info when my laptop died.
Otherwise I would call or e-mail him
-
Once in a very great while he still sells a bow on that auction site. Other than that one might be able to find contact info on the white pages.com. Since I sold my archery business don't have his info anymore.
-
He has a blond Tamerlane up right now, but there is no button for "ask seller a question"
-
Can't seem to find it. Sometimes the ask seller button is at the bottom of the listing.
-
For sentimental reasons I'd like some of the bows I hunted with as a boy back in the 1960s. Since my reentry back into bowhunting 8-9 years ago I've probably owned a hundred+ different bows. After awhile, they all become just another bow. Some are better than others but if I'm doing my part they'll all shoot pretty well.
-
Doug
I think most of our Holy Grailes are from back when we were young'uns.
