Guys--I know some of you don't go anywhere on TG but here...
Can you take a look at this thread I have in the Pow Wow and let me know about the proper quiver, arrow, and broadhead for my grandpa's old bow?

Nice bow Steve.
Now It is one thing when you find one of these old bows in a garage sale or something. It is a whole nuther program when it is inhereted from your Grampa. That makes it a family heirloom.
First and formost, I don't know if you know it or not, but the aluminum in the bow was recycled from scrapped B-17's. This deal was negotiated for Bear by Glen St. Charles and Boing (I think).
Many of them cracked up because of the adhesion problems between the metal and the wood. The fact that this one has survived this long probably says it is one of the more solid ones, but sitting in the attic all these years may have crystalized the glue. It is your business, but I would not even string that bow. Keep it as a wall hanger and cherish it for what it is...a great piece of archery history, and a great keepsake from your Grampa.
Bow doc or Wade Philips can probably tell you what the quiver, arroWs, and broad heads should be to keep it period correct. Probably may even be able to hook you up with the right stuff.

Joe did a nice job bringing back your Grandpa's bow. If I can find a picture of the quiver you are looking for I'll try to send it.
I'll be taking the factory camo off a 67 Kodiak Hunter in a few days if you want to stop by. Might as well do that 68 at the same time if you want.

If that 67 and 68 have factory camo on them, be ready to find a beautiful finish under all that paint. Bear put a regular finish on the bows then camo painted them.. The camo generally protects that original finish over the years.
I just use acetone on a soft rag and a lot of elbow grease. Acetone removes the paint easily but not the finish beneath it.

This bow is definitely one of my treasures. My grandpa took me hunting when I was young and I took him when he got old. I dressed and dragged all the deer he took in his golden years. My little boy knew him well and he will take care of it when I am gone.

I may have messed up on the 68 a little. Before Jack told me about how he does it, I took some sandpaper to it to see what was under the paint. Well, at least I know where I can get a new finish put on!
The small area on the handle shows some awfully nice wood under it.

Nice story on your Grandfathers bows Steve. That is special for sure. Joe did a good job for you.
Mr.Shanks I am thinking about collecting bows from my birth year(1967) could you post/send a picture of your bear and let me know how to tell a 67? Thanks for the help.

Thanks. If you are talking about identifying the Bear bows from 1967, those are easy. The serial number starts with 7. AND the 67 1/2 Super Kodiak is the sweetest of all time!
When I get my lesson from Jack, I'll make sure he/we take some pics for you.

The 67 will start with a 7. Like this. It was the first year of the Kodiak Hunter and only year they were 58" AMO.

I am no expert for sure...but as far as I know, the 67 1/2 SKs are all marked as 67. They were just introduced mid year. They were all phenolic risers. The 68 & 69 had the Rosewood caps.
Anyway, I went over to Jack's this afternoon and in 18 minutes he took my beat up ol' camo bow from this:

Removing factory camo is like unwrapping a Christmas gift....you never know what might be inside.

Thats how I got the paint off a 59 prototype I had. I just soaked some acetone on a rag and wiped the pait off. Looks good fellas.
