Longbow or recurve for 28" draw. What's you're opinion?Leaning towards Shrew.
Yeah Shrew bout sums that up...My collection is slowly growing
Nope, the Shrew at that length will pinch ya, unless you are talking the Lil' Favorite. I no doubt believe the RER Arroyo at 54"s to be the best bow in that range. It will not pinch or stack all the way out to 30"s, very few if any other recurves can claim that and it smokes an arrow and is very quiet. The static limbs make it a dream to shoot. Shawn
I say either the Saluki Scythian or Turk, The Scythian is 52" and the Turk is 54".

tippit...i love those limbs...what wood is it...???
Here we are with yet another "best" thread.
I am of the mind that one has to shoot everything one can get hands on and decide. Just because someone else recommends one bow doesn't necessarily mean it is the one for YOU! The Shrew IS a fabulous bow, the Saluki bows ARE awesome(I have shot them an love them), the Arroyo IS a nice bow----however, who is to say that a Dryad won't fit you better? Or a Bear, or a Thunderstick, or whatever. Shoot all the shorties you can get yer mitts on and decide that way, one mans' favorite likely won't be yours/ Thats the beauty of trad shooting.
It's a Burl veneer...nice camo!
The problem is getting my mitts on the bows to shoot. The reason I'm leaning towards the Shrew is that I shoot an older model well that is longer and think that the grip is a major reason why. Most of what I've learned in traditional archery has been from trial and error. As in trying different bows and selling off what doesn't work for me.Wish it was as easy as going somewhere to shoot every bow I wanted to.
No disagreement with the bows listed so far, and I don't think you'd go wrong with a Shrew, but let me add the Cascade Golden Hawk Magnum 52" to the mix. While I'm at it, I'll also throw in the Treadway and Wild Horse Creek 54" longbows.
Treadway Black Forest: 54" is pretty sweet
Black Widow PSR
IMO I would take a look at Cascade Archery.
Although there is not best for everyone.....
I think the Shrew is a good choice since you are already leaning....got one myself.
Lots of good bows mentioned already. If you don't have to have the latest and don't want to spend big bucks it is hard to beat a 60's Bear Kodiak Magnum. You can often find a good one on the auction site. No pinch, as smooth as it gets, and with a little 'class' thrown in.
Ron,
If you can make it to the Trad Expo in Kalamazoo January 25-27, we'll have Shrews there to try out.
Java Man
As you might notice from my nickname...I would go to hornearchery.com and take a look- or give Mark a call. I have some other bows besides Hornes as well. A Morrison-excellent bow, a Brackenbury on order as well as a sweet shooting longbow my buddy Dan Bonner made me. Like JBIORN said, you should just shoot as many kinds as you can put your hands on and buy the one that hits the spot you are looking at. I have never shot a Shrew but I have one of his quivers and a tomahawk he builds and they are both top notch quality.
I have my "Lil Treadway" on the way. Actually a 54" Treadway Black Forrest. Cant wait to try it. Bought it used off of here. Its pics were drop dead gorgous, no long wait, and at a price I can afford.
"Happy Holidays to all"
If ya like older recurves, the 54" Wing Thunderbird is a sweet shooting bow.
Shawn, you said this about a 54" Shrew longbow. Maybe you were thinking about the regular Super Shrew?
QuoteNope, the Shrew at that length will pinch ya, unless you are talking the Lil' Favorite.
The Shrew Classic Hunter longbow in 52 and 54" lengths has a 14" riser as opposed to the Super Shrews 16" riser. That along with a different limb design give it a smooth non stacking draw.
Maybe you didn't read this on my web site by Randy Gustafson when he talked about not a 54" but a 52" Shrew Classic Hunter longbow.
"Ron - as I said in my e-mail to Gregg , we really put the new 52" Shrew Classic (52LB. @ 28") to the test at last weeks Traditional Archery night. We had 7 guys shoot the bow and they all not only loved it , but they could't believe how well they could shoot it. Their draw lengths ranged between 26" to an honest 29.5". Some of the comments were "it draws so smooth" , "it's so comfortable in my hand", "wow is this quiet" "I can shoot this better than my bow" and the first comment from everyone that picked it up " holy cow is this light!". We shot for over 3hrs. and I think I only got to shoot 10 arrows with it, somebody always wanted to try it again." Randy (Gus) Gustafson Northwoods Wilderness Supply Iron Mountain Michigan
Ron, you are right as always. I just recalled someone commenting on the Shrew and assumed it was that bow. I know the lil' favorite is sweet! Shawn
Java Man I am going to try to make that show for sure.

Both are great bows. Now you just have to decide if you want a longbow or recurve....or do like me and buy both!!
what weights are ur bows tim...nice!!mark
Tim,what differences do you find between the two,as in shooting each bow? That is my problem deciding between the two.I'm most interested with quiet which would seem to favor the longbow but my recurve Shrew is so quiet I don't know which way to go.
