Had another great day of bowhunting with my gun buddies. Just three of us, two gunners and me, the stick guy. Got settled into by bottom stand down on the river at 6:30.

It was a great morning to be in the stand.

A well used train runs along the edge of the thick tangle mess which is located in the bottom that I was hunting. With all of the gun pressure, the deer are using this edge to travel. The river is located on the back side of the tangle. Tree rats were all over the place and I was that were putting on. Then all of a sudden I could hear the sound of blazing hooves! As I stood up and looked over my sholder, a nice buck was moving down the hill in a dead sprint. Something spooked him and he wasn't slowing down. The eightpoint ran down the ridge and crosted the powerline like a man on a mission. He jumped a dead fall and ran down the trail past me without slowing down for a shot. Even though I did not get a shot, I was excited to see him because he was the best buck that I had ever seen on the property. After that things went slow and I went back to watching tree rats and enjoying the morning. We had decided to quit hunting around 11:00 and when I checked my watch it was 9:45. I told myself that I would get down at 10:50. As I sat their playing cat and mouse with the tree rats, I picked up that unmistakable gate of deer moving through the bottom. As I turned to look, a two deer came into view. They were traveling the same trail that runs just fifteen yards past my stand. As the young buck and doe walked past my stand, I focused on the buck's ribs. The string slipped from my fingers and the arrow zipped through the buck. The buck's back legs kicked up and he picked up the pace for ten yards a stopped. Instead of racing off he just stood there. The doe actually seemed to calm down when she didn't the buck race off. The couple just branched of the trail and megan to move uphill out of the bottom. I rejoiced and thank God for a great shot! After sitting tight for 35 minutes, this is what I found when I got out of my stand.

I went and rounded up my two hunting buds and we took up the trail. We had good blood and the tracking started off heavy but faded in an out. We when the blood got scarce we stayed with the trail and found him in the creek. We celebrated and thanked the Good Lord for the success.

This is the second deer to fall to the Alabama Axe (Simmons Interseptors) over the past two hunts. It is always nice to share a hunt like this with you gun hunting budies. I think I will have some company next season!

Nice Job!! Wat to go!!
Good shooting and good eating.Congrats it is tough enough before gun season, but really is hard after. Ben
Congrats!
Enjoyed your story tellin.
Well done!! That is one beautiful bow also, and you surely know how to use it. I count a purty piebald doe and a tasty looking buck in a week, or less. I've got a Simmons quiver like that, but haven't used it in the field yet. Alabama Axe is a good name for those Interseptors.
Good job Doug!!  They smarten up quick when gun starts here!!
Like the bow! What kind is it?
I praise Him along with you for your success! Nice buck.
Good job, and great story. The pictures make me feel like I was there.

Great story and a mighty fine deer! I too hunt with my longbow when my other hunting buddies grab there guns, they just shake there heads. I respond by saying you wouldn't understand anyway :)
Love it!
Yes I do and most of the time no problems, however I do get tired of some of the Aholes with guns. Shooting up the woods, shooting at bottles "glass", checking you out thru the scope actually that probably isn't dangerous as they probably couldn't hit you if they tried. Meet some "good old boys", people who ha
Gee I didn't know it was loaded, the enter key went off by it's self!! Should read some "good old boys" people who have been hunting since BH. before Hugo, people who appreciate the swamps.
Awesome story Doug...thanx for sharing your hunts with us....CONGRATS!! :clapper:

Awesome,
Love to see Deer taken with bows during the gun season...
My buddy Fred,or "Tdog" as he's known here, took an 8 point with his recurve the 2nd day of gun in an area I know well and I can tell you it gets hit hard by the gunners.Hope he sees this thread and posts his story and the pix he relayed to me.How 'bout it Fred!
Thanks to all! The recurve was made by Lynn Harrelson of Harrleson Traditional Archery. I bought this bow back in 97. Lynn made me some extra limbs last year. All of his bows, longbows and recurves, are shooters!
Interseptor - Congrats, My hats off io you. 2 bow kills while hunting with gun buddies. Bucks no less. That is a great story.
Nice shot, good deer and a well told story!! Thanks!!
congrats :0)
congrats!
Hey nice - great job.
I,and a group of others on our lease, hunt with archery tackle all season here,We can use any weapon from the opener till the last day,all 4 1/2 months of the season,so we compete with gun hunters all season long.I think it's more a mind set than anything else.
Congrats on a fine deer, and that's one sweet looking bow.
Congrats!What is that bow?Its a beaut.
