Title: My grandad's archery stuff 1940s
Post by: Cody Roiter on October 22, 2009, 09:36:00 PM
Hello Guys, Some time ago when I was down at my grandad's he found his old archery stuff he had when he was about my age.. first I will tell you the story of how he got into archery.. It started just like any other day in high School in 1945.. Well as he went to his first class in the after noon all the kids of the high school where called into the Gym for a small play that was going to go one for the next hour.. Any ways as he was walked in and took chair he saw what looked like an archery target and a back stop.. as he was looking at the bull eye's on the target an arrow hit it in the gold a long with the next five arrows.. Well then came walking in a tall 6 foot man with a longbow and arrows.. Man walked up to the target and said Hell0 I am Howard Hill well my granddad had no clue Howard was well by the end of the day Howard just about got ever boy wanting to shoot a bow.. Any ways After school was out my graddad went to  munger's hardware to look at a bow and set of arrows.. This bow that I have is that bow he picked up from Bob munger who at the time was selling Ben Pearson bows and arrows.. well these arrows also came from  munger's hardware.. That is the only place my granddad  bought his archry stuff.. I know some of the stuff is from the 1950s the Bear black quiver and the one glass arrow.. The bow and the two wood arrows I am sure are from the 1940's.. funny story why the bow is in half.. One day my granddad was hunting he shot an arrow at a nice fat buck he missed the buck the buck ran at him and my granddad took the bow by the end as if he was going to hit it the head as it went past.. My grandpa did just that but missed the buck and hit the tree next to him..LOL..

Sorry guys for the long story.. to sum it my grandad was the one who got me into this older archery thing which now I thank him very very much...

Later Guys,

Cody

Cody- you'd be surprised at how many of us thought "hardware" and "archery" were almost synonomous terms back in the middle of the last century. Thanks for posting this, my first experiences were in the early and mid sixties but this brought back a lot of memories.   GY

My first quiver, for my first hunting season was identical to the one you have pictured.  It too belonged to my grandfather.  I don't know whatever happened to it.  I'm always keeping an eye out for another.

Thanks for sharing.

The story is great! My first recurve came from the "hardware" dept. at the local grocery store, a ben pearson 45# recurve. Wish I still had it, loaned it to an uncle and never got it back.....
