I ran across this website while doing some research on an older recurve.
I've been reading all the threads and really enjoying all the great info!
I have been bowhunting for roughly 30 years and just last year got bit my a traditional bug. My dad shipped me his old Bear Alaskan that he bought in Grayling. It's the bow I learned on as a kid and I started shooting it with hopes of hunting with it someday. Although my dad has always been into archery, he didn't hunt a lot. I would love to kill a whitetail with his bow!
I've gotta tell you, it was quite humbling! After shooting a dialed in compund for years my groups (I use the word "group" loosly)were just terrible! 20 yards looked like a mile to me!
I have since aquired an early 70's - 55# Kodiak Mag and do much better with that.
I continue to shoot both bows and have figured out a pretty good sight picture with both bows.
I'm consistently hitting the vitals on my 3-d target out to 20 yards with the Kodiak and confident enough to take it with me this fall.
I grew up in Michigan, so needless to say I'm a Bear fan! I remember visiting the museum in Grayling when I was a kid and I have recently read everything I could put my hands on related to Fred Bear and Bear Archery.
I look forward to learning from all of you experts!

Welcome Greg! My story is similar, I put down the compound last year and havent looked back.

Welcome,I know how you feel,I went thru what you're going thru 25 years ago,I had a burning desire to go back..Got a Kodiak Mag..#45 & I just couldn't put it down.Set up lights in my back yard & shot until my fingers were raw.Then the sickness hit..More recurves.Couldn't get enough of them...Then quivers then arrows & broadheads,The wife thought I was going off the deep end.I'm still sick..Its a fantastic road to travel.I have met some of the best people of my life in this arena.I would not give up this passion for any thing on earth...Welcome again

The way I look at it is that we should all shoot the bows we're having the most FUN with. If that's all-traditional gear, great. If it’s a compound bow, great too. If it’s a longbow on Monday, a recurve on Wednesday and a compound on Friday, knock you're out. Great, great and great! Launching arrows is fun. That’s my opinion. Here’s a secret though, don’t miss traditional bowhunting gear. It’s a blast and very satisfying.

Welcome! You will enjoy and learn here. There is lots of knowledge. People treat each other well and with respect. A good place to hang out.
My wife grew up in Kalkasa about 15 miles from Grayling, and that is how I got interested in Bear bows. Her father does some really interesting and beautiful wood mosaic inlay stuff, and used to dumpster dive behind the Bear factory, looking for small scraps of exotic wood to use in his work.
