Title: 64 kodiak brace height help
Post by: agross1 on September 15, 2009, 07:05:00 PM
as a few of you know i am still very new to trad,  i have done a search and didn't come up with much,  i was wondering what the best brace height would be for a 64 kodiak,  i know the string stretches,  i have been shooting for about two weeks, maybe about 120 shots and the brace height has gone from about 8 and a quarter to about 7 and a quarter

The 1964 Bear Archery catalog calls for a brace height between 7" and 8".  This of course is a guideline.  Don't get hung up if your brace is outside these perameters.

Proper brace height is an individual thing.

Sounds like your string has stretched well.  It's time to twist it up very slowly and raise the brace height untill you find that magical spot where the bow settles down.  It will be dead in the hand (least vibration) and will quiet down audibly.

Go slow, raise it an 1/8" at a time and shoot it a bit at each height untill you get the feel and sound you're looking for.

I like to do this before adding anything to the string like brush buttons, string selencers, etc.

Remember that your nock point will likely move around slightly as you raise the brace height so be diligant about checking it and keeping it constant.

Once you get it where you want it, it's a good idea to put everything on your string that you intend to use for hunting or shooting.  Brush buttons, string silencers, etc all influence the way your bow performs.

Hopefully these added gadgets, make a good thing better.  If not, take them off.

I shoot my Kodiaks with brush buttons only.

TRAP’s advice is spot on.

I’ll add this:

With most recurves, a LOWER brace height will deliver a slightly smoother drawing bow at draw lengths over 27 inches and a bit more arrow speed, but will also generally be a bit noisier and a bit more critical of shooting errors.

With most recurves, a HIGHER brace height will deliver a bit more “stack” past 27 inches, a tad less arrow speed, but will generally also be quieter and more forgiving to shoot.

Don’t be afraid to twist that bowstring up and down in order to experiment with different brace heights with any recurve. TRAP hit the nail on the head when he wrote, “Shoot it a bit at each height until you get the feel and sound you're looking for.”

just set your nocking point so the arrow is 3/8 to 1/2 inch above level until you find the brace height you want... if you get  obvious porpoising (arrow wags up and down) move it... usually up.

Once set correctly nocking point height won't change if brace changes.

going out to shoot my new (to me) 64 Kodiak today. Great thread here to get me started. I have been hunting with fast flight strings on Widows for 20 years. Now I am graduating to vintage Bear recurves with dacron.   :)   In regards to the dacron strings will they stretch to a point and then settle in or will I need to adjust brace height regularly on them?

8 1/4 is what it ended up at. I shot the 64 and 66 Kodiaks, and the 68 and 76 Kodiak Hunters. I really like the 64 Kodiak. The slimmer grip is perfect for my stubby fingers.   :)
