Title: Free to Good Home
Post by: Wade Phillips on July 29, 2009, 09:24:00 AM
Free broadhead and fish point packages made after 1971, Cat-Claw, Muzzy, Rockie, Sherwin, etc. Most are leftovers from auctions and collections picked up over the years. Probably never thrown anything away that was archery related and hate to start now... yes all collectors are crazy... If you collect this stuff let me know, hopefully someone can use it. If more than one collector is interested will toss names in a hat and draw this weekend. Packages are free, postage is free, terms not negotiable.

Time to start disposing of hundreds of miscellaneous items that have accumulated over the years.

Thought someone might be able to tell us something about this foam Bear Archery Headquarters sign or perhaps date it for us. Obviously a dealer sign. Standard Bear logo and color scheme that started in the 1950s. It is 28” across. The raised letters and logo are each cut out from a separate pieces of foam and fit into the yellow background. Would guess this took quite a bit of time to make. Two of them were picked up in Michigan in 2008. The plastic covering was torn, just opened it a bit for the photograph. The plastic, foam, and feel give the impression of 1970s, but I'm sure that wild stab in the dark could be +/- 20 years. No "Grayling, Michigan" on it, which may be a clue to date it. Even though there is no room to hang it, not giving the sign away just yet.

Wade, one of these days your going to have to post a few pics of your museum. I say a "few" because I know it's not all going to fit in one picture.

I believe everyone would enjoy seeing it.

Thanx, Shep

Back in the olden days, before all of the computer graphic stuff come on the scene I saw a couple of signs made like that.  Not the Bear Archery signs themselves but signs made out of foam with the logo glued on. One time it was at a show and they had two big wooden boxes on each side of the stage. They had a cut out that the foam sign fit in and it had a lightbulb hehind it. The signs themselves were flo. orange and when they turned the light on the whole logo glowed grightly. I saw a similiar set up a couple of years later and they had cut out the front of a podium and put one of the foam signs in the cut out.  It also had a bright light behind it to make the sign glow.  Maybe Fred had those made up for shows or displays.

Trap - Boy, thanks for bringing everyone back to earth.

You are correct the sign is not being given away... Just the boxes.

Wanted to find out some information about the sign, as I know nothing about it at all, date, etc. It has just been sitting here since last year.

R.V.T.B. - Thanks so much for the information about back lighting of foam signs. This one actually has letters that are about twice as thick as the yellow foam. Just took it into a dark room and put up to a light, you are correct, it does light up very bright with the back light. Wasn't coordinated enough to hold the sign and hod the camera far enough to get a photograph.

Bernie - I'm certain you know who is in the photograph to the left of the sign, but probably not many guys outside the state of Michigan will know that.

Wade - Was that sign an example of "Bear Baiting?"

I'll hold out for one of your tomato stakes though...

Tony - "Bear Baiting", you always come up with the best one liners.

Guess it was an example of not thinking. Just dumped the packaging on the floor for a photograph and thought, hey maybe someone knows something about that sign, so will take one photograph rather then two... and make one post rather then two... big mistake...

Hey, I'm starting to run low on tomato stakes. Tomatoes are doing great and just put in a couple more stakes yesterday. That reminds me, I need to water them (the tomato plants, not the stakes).

Looking around for a hat... this is the only one I found. Anyone know the size, material it is made from and the original owner's name?

No, I'm not giving away the hat nor the 1940s Bear bows in the photograph.

Wade,

Yes, I am pretty sure it is a photo of a fellow I photographed myself many years later.

That, of course, is why I think that photo would be more comfortable back home with me   ;)

Nels Grumley and canvas 7 1/4".  Do I win the sign if I get all 3 right?  Or do I get to choose from that lineup of old flatbows there?      :bigsmyl:

Migra Bill and all, Everyone's name so far is in the hat.

Trap - Sorry to report that you are incorrect on all three guesses. I believe since you missed all three, that I get to pick any Kodiak that you have...

Hey those aren't flat bows, those are Deerslayers, Hunters and Bush Bows.

After the drawing, I will photograph the size, label of material and tell you who owned it.

Bernie, You have a good memory. I'll have to be more careful about what I let show on the fringes of some of these photographs.

Bernie - Did I tell you the story about the original owner of that chair in the photograph?

I found out all the details about it. Not sure I ever posted them on the chair thread.

Big Riser was the first name drawn out of the hat. Drew a second name rp65 who will get the consolation prize...

The hat is deerskin, size 7 and was owned by an Archery Hall of Fame Inductee. Who knows which one???
