Title: World's Worst Arrow Straightener. Help!!!
Post by: Bucksnort101 on December 05, 2007, 11:42:00 PM
I am indeed the world worse at straightening cedar arrow. Picked up a Ace roller straightener which helped a little, but I guess I must not be detecting the arched portions of the arrows well enough.
Any suggestions or tips on arrow straightening?

It took quite a bit of practice for me to get good at it. There is an excellent write up somewhere on this site about 'finger straightening' shafting and really simplifies the process; but it still requires the practice.

Practice makes perfect, well close enough. I was frustrated a few dozen arrow shafts ago but after sitting down and working my way through a few dozen, I am pretty confident in my straightening. Just keep working at it.

I made a long V-block once and threw a thin towel over the arrow shaft and ironed the shaft as I spun it by hand. It worked well, but you can also burnish it straight just using a nice smooth screwdriver shaft. Face the high side of the shaft up and rub the high spot, using a bit of pressure.

All though I use all the regular methods for straightening wood shafts. My favorite is still the way I used to straighten aluminum shafts, with a set up of rollers and a dial indicator.
Mine is home built but there are vesions on the market. I can usually get to withen .003 on my best shafts.

I agree with Macbow. I use an AAE straightener.

I roll the Shaft on my Kitchen CounterTop, Until I see a High Spot. Then I hold the Shaft and Elevate it with a Kids Trapazoid, A Rectangle with Angle Ends, ALL  while Holding Onto the Shaft, Keeping My Eye on Where the High Spot Was.
Then Roll The "Ace Roller Straightener"     Over the Bad Spot, Over & Over Until You "Think" it should be Better. Then Roll the Shaft on the Countertop to see if I Fixed it, or Made Another "High Spot". I Agree "Practice is the  BEST  Teacher"!!
You will get the Hang of It,  GOOD LUCK  and Be Patient,  Patience  is a  BIG HELP  As Well!!
You will wonder how you Couldnt Do It Before!!   :goldtooth:

I do like Shakes.602. Roll on flat formica tabletop and try to look "under" the arrow. The high spots are the "crooks" and they become readily apparent. At that point, I just put my finger on the highest spot and pull up on the closest end of the shaft. I use the Ace roller the same way for minute adjustments.

Really much easier than it sounds....
