Title: Bear Catalog Conflict
Post by: BobT on April 19, 2009, 02:18:00 AM
I'm hoping somebody can straighten me out here! I have been trying to find out exactly what bow models were produced/sold in 1958. I know the Alaskan replaced the Cub but was not cataloged, the Cub was in the catalog but was apparently discontinued after the catalog was sent to be printed (late '57 I assume). I have seen reference to the Panda being listed in the '58 Catalog but it is not in mine. I got this info from the bow identifier on the Fred Bear site, it listed the '58 catalog as the source of information on the Panda. Was there more than one edition of the catalog that year?

I sent Al Reader an e-mail concerning this some time ago but didn't get a response.

Thanks!

Bob,
My cd-rom of Bear catalogs shows that the bows available in 1958 were: Kodiak Special, Kodiak,
Grizzly, Polar, Alaskan (with the notation; "Bold Successor to the famous Cub"), and the Panda. Just those 6 bows.
hope this helps...

Bob- I think you may want to invest in a bear catalog cd from 3 rivers. From what I see it looks like the Alaskan was in the catalog and the Panda was also in there. Now I can only assume that these cd's are true and accurate and we know what they say about assuming.

Bob
Part of the catalog conflict was, and off the top of my head I don't remember exactly which one was effected. Either the 57 or 58 issue, a large part of the printed catalogs were destroyed in a fire, so they just took the year before and put a new cover on it. So during one year there are actually two different catalogs with the same cover, and I want to believe it was the 57 that was effected.

I too am thinking about a CD-Rom of the catalogs. How much detail does it go into for each bow model? Are all the colors etc detailed? thanks

The CD replicates each page of each catalog from 1948 to 1978.  What ever detail that was originally printed in a catalog is there.  Each page can be enlarged using a zoom feature. If the catalog was originally printed in color, it's replicated in color.
There are no footnotes with additional information or history...just what was in the original catalog. I've used my almost daily while reading this forum.
