Title: my 59
Post by: huntersim on April 13, 2009, 04:14:00 PM
Just wanted to post a few photos of a 60" 59 kodiak I picked up a few weeks ago here on TG.

Couple of questions; The weight is 48 lbs. Seems a pretty common weight. Did they just make the majority of them 48 lbs or could it be thats just what people are willing to part with? Also it has a chip on the belly about mid limb in the glass (very minor). Doesnt seem to hurt it at all but I'm thinking of mixing some color matched epoxy up to cover it. Being in the main working part of the limb do you think it will stay or just pop out later?

I had never thought of getting one until I was at Mr Razorheads house looking at his collection (cant say thanks enough John!) and he let me look at a 59 MSW he had just got. Just holding that thing and being able to feel the balance and the grip said hunting bow to me. So this one popped up at the right time.

I really want to hunt with it some so I decided it needed refinished. The coin and the phenolic is from Kurt. I've got the right leather so all I need to work on now is a set of transfers.

There is some minor stress in the upper limb but I've had worse in a 70 K-mag. It also has a new style coin in it that I'm going to replace but for the most part the bow is in good shape.

Bowdoc...thanks for the 59 refinish thread. When I get this thing done I'll add a few photos to it. And thanks Kurt....that coin looks great.

Thanks guys, I'm pretty excited to get it shaped up and use it some.

John, I'll bring it by for sure. May be a while because I have a few projects to wrap up first.  :)

Has anyone ever seen this? I finally had a chance to do a little work on my 59 and when I took the leather wrap off I found this little piece of paper taped to the front of the grip. All it says is 604. Any idea what it was for or what it signified? Thanks.

That would be my guess as well. Check to see if some of the tape is still stuck to the grip.

LOL, thanks guys, That makes a lot of sense. I looked at it for a half hour wondering what it was.    :knothead:

Trap, it looks like someone tried to take it off before adding the leather wrap and part of the tape and paper tore away  so they just left it on and wrapped it up.

It acts like it will come up in one piece so I'm thinking about putting back before I wrap it.

Thanks guys.

Cool, Make sure you take the opportunity to seal the wood under that leather grip.  Not sure why Bear Archery did things the way they did, but most are bare wood under the leather grip.

when Bear Archery sprayed the finish on all bows that came with a leather grip on them. They would hold the bow in the middle with a clamp to spray the bow. Then the bows were hung on hooks to dry.The leather grip covered the spot where the bow was clamped so no finish. That footage is in one of the Bear Archery video's can't rememeber which but its in one.bowdoc

Scott, no photos yet. I did manage to get new tips glued on and most of the bow is sanded.
