I have been talking with "Snag" on here, and there is a good population of rabbits here in the high desert where I live (Lakeview, Oregon). Thought I would invite you trad gang Oregon boys out for a hunt. Or anyone else for that matter. Sometime this next spring, weekend thing, camp out. If there is enough interest, should be enough shooting for everyone.
Sounds like a good tune-up to get shooting after the winter.
Where you talking about? Cotton tail or jacks? license required?
We are always up for bunny shaft slinging....Spring is a good time to shake it out
Yeah---where in Oregon? I would go----and i suppose we could get some idahodians to come along.
Lakeview Oregon, Very south East border of Oregon. 140 miles south Of Burns Oregon Jack rabbits a plenty, there are a few Cottontails, but sure rocky where they hang. Might be able to swing a little coyote calling. It would be great to shoot with all of you fellows!!
Seven hour drive from here in Sandy roughly. It would be fun to do but I don't think I'll make it, just to much driving for me.
It may be a bit of a drive, but I know a couple guys that might be interested, and Snag lives around here too-perhaps we can get a carpool from Eugene area and head over.
RonP
After Mid-March and basketball season, that'd be a hoot. Keep us posted.
Stan
I'd likely make it, sounds like fun. I'm up on the North Umpqua
RonH
I'd be interested. Keep me posted
Terry
Hi Ron! Yep, I have a seat reserved for you if you want. Sounds like fun!
I'd be interested. Let me know. Greg
I have been trying to get a few guys interested in this since last year. Keep me posted, I will make it. Doug
I wonder if the rabbits ears are burning....lol
IF you guys have any dates that sound good let us know. Not a whole bunch of tree's out there but lots of sagebrush, We would have to haul in our own firewood. Sounds like we might get a good turn out though. There is miles and miles of good spots for us to got chase rabbits out there. I know of a few good central spots to camp.
Dan.
I work on Sat. So I would need to know in advance so I could schedule it off. You guys throw some dates out and I will work with it. So, when is ice out down that way Dan?
I would say First of April on would be good, Weather will be better, not so cold for camping. Depends on the yr, March can be great too. Anyone from out of state will have to have A Oregon license to hunt to awnser a earlier question.
I might head up from the Bay area of California, mapquest says 7 hours. Keep me posted.
License required for jacks in OR?Our bunny hunting "club" might make the trip
I'd be in for a bunny hunt. We would need to time it so not to conflict with the TAO Golf shoot.
Might be a good time to check out the new late deer hunts for 08' as well.
Roadkill, The F&W said a License is required to hunt anything in Oregon. I do not know if they offer a 3 day type deal or not. Hope you guys can make it.
It is sounding like a great gathering of bowmen. Like it!
I'll see if I can talk Mr. Moose (my 6`5" son) into wandering up from northern CA, with me. It would be great to actually meet other Tradgangers! how much single malt do you figure we need?
Sounds like fun. I live pretty close by and would love to join in.
R
How does everyone like a date in April?? Might need to narrow down a date around the first of yr, so some can get off time in need be. I have to let my job know quite a while in advance.
Sounds good to me. I have to be in town on the 12th or the weekend closest to that for a birthday. Maybe later in the month....?
hhhmmm... sounds fun... do you guys have any dates planned so far....
i figure if the idaho and nevada guys are willing to make it, i might try and give it a shot.... :D
mike
An april date would work for me.
OK, that's above Alturas; April works for me!
April would be best for me, I'm pretty flexible with days as I can make my oun work schedule.
Ron
OK, I'll throw up a date April 19th & 20th Sat Sun. Maybe some might want to come on the Fri the 18th as well. Hows that sound to all?? let me know.
Dan.
Sounds like a blast...Been wanting to do that anyway...
hhhmmm i might have to look into it...april is a pretty hectic month for us, and we have a big weekend shoot here in ca. second weekend in april, i think....
i'll look into it..
mike
Looks good to me.
R
I will put it on the calendar and hope to make it!
RonP
I will check the dates. If they work I am in. I know 3 others that would tag along.
Brock - Bull Mtn Archery
Snag---I am interested---about a 5 hour drive for me. I will need to request the days of way a head of time, but usually I am able to get my requested days off. I hunted elk up in northeastern OR this last fall and saw a good number of cottontails up there--one that was pushed by my partner jumped off a ledge and nearly took my head off. And yes, there is just as much air around an OR bunny as there is around a CA jack.
Amazing who would of thought that, Yolla Bolly. I look forward to getting out and shooting with you guys!

I was hunting around Steens Mountain last year. "Jack rabbits a plenty" hardly does justice in describing how many jacks can be found in Eastern Oregon. The things were everywhere. Just driving down the roads on any given night we'd hit two are three of those critters (swerving to avoid hitting them can be dangerous so we just got used to the fact that running over rabbits couldn't be avoided). I'd absolutely love to bring my beagle down there someday - he'd absolutely be in beagle heaven.
I might be able to make it up from Mt. Shasta...I will have to see when the time get closer.
Jon
I am aready getting excited!
72high---I would be coming up you way, and would probably have room in the truck for you, if transport is a problem.
Hoping to leave the Fri before---come back whenever the boss says! Probably be tent camping unless Snag says the trailer is a better idea. If we shoot straight, I will cook up a batch of Schaffer Mtn. rabbit.
Gearing up for one heck of a crew it looks like to me.
Dang!.....Can you do this again next year when I'm retired?
I'd love to.
If we don't annihilate the whole population of rabbits...lol...we ought to do this as a "spring tradition" for the traditional archer!
Sadly, that is the weekend before our big family trip to Hawaii. Otherwise I'd be in for sure!
Sounds like the dates are ok for most??
Sounds good! I'll be ready to thump some bunnies...let the fur fly!
About how far is that from Coos Bay? I am currently going to school there.
I have April 17-19 blocked out as request off dates at the hospital---Lord, please let it be!
I just told me wife how many guys are getting together for this shoot in the spring...her motherly/wifely comment was "It doesn't sound safe!" I love it! lololol
I'll probably come up on the Thursday evening the 18th. If anyone needs a ride up let me know, I'll have room for one. Count me in.
Hey Frank,
It's a pretty good hike from Coos Bay. I'm about two hours from you and if you can make it up to Eugene (well, just south of Eugene), you could hook a ride with us the rest of the way. Keep in touch as the dates get closer.
Stan
Well , I will have to go out early and check out the rabbit pop, I quess. The place I have in mind is about 45 min from town. We can go any direction out there. I Can try to get my wife to make a huge Elk stew or Chili!!
I've got it on the calendar. Sounds like fun.
How about some dutch oven cooking? I can make a pretty good stew. Potluck?
Is there plenty of places to camp? Are we talkin public or private land? Im into it, always looking for a good reason to carry my bow.
OK if I can get my oldest to come along I think I'll make the drive even though it's a long one. Is there a place to camp already picked out?
I Know of several places to camp, I will see for sure how many we have coming when it gets closer and then find a suitable spot based on head count, All public ground. I can get some firewood, if most bring a few pcs we will have plenty for the campfire
hey, all you norcal guys--how `bout we try to meet at the Black Bear Diner in Susanville and convoy up from there? I'll bring some wood as well. We're gonna have a blast! What about water, do we need to bring a few gallons with us?
Sorry, Snag-didn't see your post on the black pots: you bring yours, I'll bring mine. I used to guide trout parties, so I'll bring along some "specalities de la maison". I find this sort of stuff to be great fun. May I propose we all bring a tux t-shirt along for the banquet?
Dress attire is strictly optional....I opt out! lol I read this again and it didn't sound right. I mean "dressing up" attire... lol
Some of us find ourselves closer to the woods without dress attire  ........ :D
There is always something good about Cast iron cook"n"
Rackjabbit chili verde---it wil take the chill off a spring evening ;)
Hey Snag---Maybe your wife has heard about my shooting?!!!
Here's a little rabbit humor.
A man was driving along the highway, and saw a rabbit hoping across the middle of the road. He swerved to avoid hitting the rabbit, but unfortunately the rabbit jumped in front of the car and was hit. The driver, being a sensitive man as well as an animal lover, pulled over to the side of the road and got out to see what had become of the rabbit.
Much to his dismay, the rabbit was dead. The driver felt so awful be began to cry.
A woman driving down the highway saw the man crying on the side of the road and pulled over. She stepped out of her car and asked the man what was wrong.
"I feel terrible," he explained. "I accidentally hit this rabbit and killed it."
The woman told the man not to worry. She knew what to do. She went to her car trunk and pulled out a spray can. She walked over to the limp, dead rabbit, and sprayed the contents of the can onto the rabbit.
Miraculously, the rabbit came to life, jumped up, waved its paw at the two humans and hopped down the road. Fifty feet away the rabbit stopped, turned around, waved at the two again, hopped down the road another 50 feet, turned, waved, and hoped another 50 feet.
The man was astonished. He couldn't figure out what substance could be in the woman's spray can! He ran over to the woman and demanded, "What was your spray can? What did you spray onto that rabbit?"
The woman turned the can around so that the man could read the label. It said: "Hare Spray Restores Life to Dead Hare. Adds Permanent Wave."
:saywhat: :biglaugh:
TTT. for those that might not have seen it.
Ouch!! :clapper: Good one!
Oh man....I fell for that one twice! I can't believe it! If I start dreaming of rabbits running around waving at me I know who to blame! lol
Basic Instinct! My thanks for getting this started. Hope it does not turn into more work than that for which you bargained. Looking forward to meeting you.
And yes, I am rejoicing---one of my twins is graduating from the CHP (Ca Highway Patrol) academy today, and the other just found out the Navy has changed its mind, and is NOT sending him overseas.
No problem Yolla Bolly. Hope we all have a good time. I think the campfire time will be as much fun as the hunting. Sounds like you have some great kids there as well!!!! I Wish them the BEST!!!!Where are you from in Northern Cal?
I will make this bunny shoot unless college throws something at me that i can not miss.
Hope to see Ya there!!
ttt .for any newcomers wanting to come.
I was just talking to fellow Idaho tradganger Shawn last night, and we would like to go. Where exactly is the camp going to be? And can someone please remind me the dates?
Thanks guys, I look forward to meeting all of you.
Jeff
Basic Instinct---PM sent
JBiorn- April 17-19 are the dates. Exact location is still not determined.
Dates April 18th 19th 20th. Fri Sat Sun. I have several locations in mind. North of Lakeview On highway 395 north towards Burns. I will go look at Rabbit Pop first part of March, But I know of several good spots we could camp. Approx 45-50 miles north of Lakeview there is a road that is by some big power lines turn to the west, the raod goes all the way through to Paisley Oregon. I will try to make up some sort of sign to put on the highway or Something. Maybe I can somehow post a map if I could figure that out?? good luck on my part!! It is a good gravel road, so Tent or trailer camping would all be ok.
Sounds good...I'll be making bunny arrows till then. Never been out that way. Looking forward to it.
Basic are you talking about the road that goes clear across the plateau and down off the rim? I went across that a couple of years ago. Kit Carson saved a whole expedition that was caught up there in a blizzard.
I'll be working down at the coast all spring, otherwise I'd partake in "bunnyquest".
Too bad you didn't plan this for the end of March, some of the fella's might have enjoyed stopping in at Glass Butte for Knapp-in. Not too far up the trail to Glass Butte!
Have fun and lose lots of arrows!
Tree Killer---Now you have me intrigued---What can you tell me about the "Knapp-in"?
Well, it looks like my dysfunctional administration just killed my participation this year. Not that I'm especially bitter about this, but it's a regular situation. their inability to plan ahead shouldn't constitute an emergency on my part, but c'est la vie!
but only 12 month, 21 days before RETIREMENT!! Then I'll be out there most any day...WhoooHaaa!!

Yolla Bolly...it's a gathering out at Glass Butte where guys/gals/kids bust a bunch of rock, make and shoot bows, make and shoot atlatls, and basically most everything primitive. There's some mighty good knappers that show up.
It's going to be the last full week in March this year. Some folks set up teepee's, while others have camp trailers.
It can be cold and windy that time of year, and even a little snow.
Glass Butte is big obsidian quarry that has been used for several thousand years give or take. It's located just south of Hwy 20 between Bend and Burns.
Thought I was going to make it down for the hunt. It is the same weekend as one of the bigger shoots up here at Moses Lake. I will be there.
I will try to make the Knapp-in. Sounds great. I will get in touch with you Ron for more information. Brock - Bull Mtn Archery
Curious to hear what bows guys are bringing to shoot. It might give some of us an opportunity to try a bow we have been wondering about! I will bring a Blacktail and a Morrison.
My Wes Wallace and with any luck my Marriah thermal with new limbs.
I will have my Brack! My new Blacktail is 11 months out now!!! whats taking soooo long!! My hunting buddy will have a Centaur/Selway longbow and a Foley recurve.
I will be bringing a Northern Mist "Whisper" longbow, and IF my brother hasn't borrowed it again, an older Bear recurve.
I'll have one of my Toelke Whips and my Hoyt GM.
Anyone bringing a Shrew?
Angus---Sorry to hear you can't make it this year.
Next year in Sagebrush!
TTT.
Sounds like fun!!
I hope my new bow is done by then. Lets see, David said 8-12 weeks, and I ordered her two weeks ago, I believe that I should have her with a week to spare.
What a great way to break a new bow in! I better start gathering some arrows.
God Bless,
Paul
Hey BI,
If your hunt hasn't filled up yet (sure there's plenty of room on the National Forest) a few of us from Hood River would like to come down!
I'll be bringing griffin, pronghorn and Morrison(s).
TV
come one come all!!!! Looking forward to seeing everyone
well,i live in prineville and i might have to see if i can make.my wife works on sat so it would be a one day thing for me.john
I'll be bringing a Whip and a Kanati
R
I'm bringing my new Rose Oak King Panther and a Griz.
Slappy
Count on it next year, Bruce, but you gotta promise to give Tim a bad time about ducking work to hunt piggies with the Wensel bros in two weeks (don't let on I'm really jealous!)
Ok guys, I have a serious question to all the bunny hunters. Is this for traditional gear only? I have a brother inlaw who is a compound shooter, he really needs, and wants, to come to this shoot. I have taken him into hunting 30 years ago, he has progressed by selling his 30-378, this year, and upgrading to a Hoyt with wheels, he just needs time to make the final climb and hit the pinnacle. We do not want to interfere with the wishes of any of the hunters in this group. If there is one person who will be offended by him bringing a compound PLEASE post here or PM me and he will not come, or leave it behind. This is going to be a great time.....
I'm bringing a heavy Whip, a light Whip, a takedown Whip, and a long Whip, by the current arsenal count looks like the bunnies might take a WHIPPIN ( or not).......doug
I'm not offended. Heck I use to shoot a compound until I was allowed to try a recurve. I was hooked after that experience! Maybe this would provide him with the same opportunity I had. We are all archers and hunters. Just my opinion....
No problem here at all. glad to have him.
Sorry if this has been dicussed already but what are the license requirements in Or.
Sounds like fun
A little follow up on Bigleg's comment above, His brother-in-law's 7 year old son shoots a longbow!
Bigmax:I promise not to whine if your b-in-law out shoots me!
I appreciate all the positive responses, looks like we will be headed to bunny country.
Hey YB, I whine all the time, guess you can tell who is the best shot. I 'm hoping to level the field soon though.... doug
Yeah, the wheel shooter will probably be the only one to hit a rabbit!! The more the merrier.
I may miss, but I sure scare them.
:bigsmyl:
Getting excited. Arrows are flying where I want 'em most days.
Snag---Basic Instinct: Any more news or plans---I would like to be able to order topo maps of the planned hunt area.
That's my birthday weekend and I think I might be able to make it. A bit of a drive from Horseshoe Bend but it sounds like fun!
Did the scouting trip turn up some rabbits?
I have not been able to get out. but here is a map I drew up to the spot. Not the best map, but you will get a good idea for now anyway.
Hard to read I will have to try to make bigger one or something.
When is everyone coming over? we might be able to meet up Friday the 18th somewhere and travel out together for those that can make it Friday
I'll be there on Sat. afternoon. I can't get away on Friday. I have friends in Crooked River I want to see.
Dan, I have been out in the Sycan area before. This looks like it is to the east of it. If I have it right the coordinates are 42deg.47.755'N 120deg.15.925'W at 4534ft. elevation. I tried to copy my topo map program and post it here...haven't been successful yet! There looks like a lot of roadless land north of there and to the west of Lake Abert. Looks good!
I am hoping to head up on Thursday---The map is not showing up on the post. Can you recommend a place to buy a renewal license that is easy to get in and out pulling a trailer?
Yolla Bolly True value up town is the only spot I believe you can. Park in the Jerry's or Safeway lot and walk down there. Just a couple block from there. Myself and a buddy will be heading out Fri about noon. Also to those that can, Remember a little firewood, there is none out there to cut by camp. I will bring some.
Dan, we are headed down sometime on Friday, its a long drive, so we will get in late. I think we are coming home Monday, it will take us that long to find our arrows..... if you have a larger map, that would be great, or I need to get more powerful glasses...doug
I'll try a bigger map here.
Well guys it seems that I am Pastor on call for that weekend.
Maybe next year - have fun, be careful, and God Bless.
Paul
Would really like to come down for this but promissed Brock I would do the Moses Lake shoot that weekend. I was going to bring Griffins, Thunderhorns, and a shrew. sorry.
Gene
