Title: Any Type 1 A risers out there for hunters?
Post by: Danny Rowan on February 10, 2009, 11:49:00 PM
Just wondering if all the Type 1 A risers are being horded by collectors or is there any available for hunting use. The one Bear I have always wanted in a hunting weight. Even a B riser would be considered if a Type 1.

Is the serial # 171x on one of those takedowns, made after the year 1972....say 73-74-75, I thought they started with A for the A-handle?

Yes the A is correct that's an early handle it has a fat grip(1970ish)before the S grip or 2000 series..I believe Jerry(the seller) just assumed we all knew it would read A-171X...and it would really read something like A-1715 there is no X and I have no idea why he does that...bd

Bill – The description is certainly not detailed nor complete for what you might expect for that price for an A … When I was following them, they were usually 300 or 400 less.

You should ask the seller some logical questions that you have and ask for more photographs…

What is the exact serial number?

Are the riser and the limbs all original with the original finish?

Has the riser or limbs been repaired in any fashion at any time?

Are there any cracks or separations in the riser or limbs?

The seller states…

“Please ask all questions as all sales are final.”

Then later states…

“All sales are final.”

Some sellers try to make their descriptions into a guessing game, and state “All sales are final”, and if you do not guess the right question, you are stuck with the bow and all it its defects that you were not able to uncover.

I’ve been stung a few times on these types of scams, as well as the seller who just outright describes the bow as shootable when it has cracked or separated laminations.

BowDoc - Yes, your "trick question" comment is very appropriate.

The best advice for Internet purchases is...

"Know what you are buying and who you are buying it from."

Wade..some good questions there and like I need another A handle like a hole in the head but was wondering about the listing that stated  "Note - Although officially discontinued in 1972, several parts for these bows remained on the shelves at Bear, and a few "A" and "B" models were assembled in 1973 and 1974. These later assemblies can be recognized by their white serial numbers".

Whenever I sell a bow it is 'Satisfaction Guaranteed' no desire to stiff anyone.
"All sales final' to me means 'Buyer beware'.

The seller is just copying what he read on Al Reader's article regarding the history of the Bear take down. You have to be careful when dealing with people, sadly even when you think you know someone they can turn around an bite you in the arse...traditional archery is no exception.

That is why I said 'to me' it is my personal interpretation. And I enjoy being a seller who will accept a return, regardless of circumstance both on and off ebat; that is how I like to do business.

Danny - No need to send me a finders fee for suggesting you start this thread... LOL... Glad to see that entire process took less than 20 hours from the time you started this thread.

You may want to start another thread about 60# limbs before someone beats you to it...

Wade, got an offer for a set of type 1 limbs that are 65# on an A riser. They will need a refinish though. Not a problem for me. And thank you very much for the thread suggestion.

Well decided on a set of #2 limbs, 60# on an A riser and will make a 58" bow. Could not find a set of 60# for an A riser, will keep looking but the #2 limbs should do just fine.

Thank you all for your help.

Danny - Great going on the limbs. Looks like you are set. now. Sure didn't take long.

You should let Grant Young know about the contact information for the #1 - 65# limbs as he is looking for some heavier weights. He is out arrowing some bacon for a few more days but should be back on this forum shortly.
