Title: Any Pics of Bear TD Recurves??
Post by: Nala on January 31, 2009, 08:11:00 PM
Hey all,

I posted this in the POW WOW and it was suggested I ask it in here.

I have always liked the Bear takedowns, especially the model with the latch that comes in A and B sizes.  I don't know too much about the specifics on these bows, just that I love the looks of them.  I also think the new TD they sell now, the rosewood model, is one of the prettiest bows out there right now.

The only problem is that there are hardly ever any pics posted of these Bear TD bows.  Whenever I see one, I check it out for sure.  Not only do I enjoy seeing pics of these Bear TD's, but I also like to collect them.  I save bow pictures on my hard drive when I see a picture of a bow that I like.  I often go back and look over different pictures I have collected over the years.

So if you all have any pics of these great looking Bear TD bows, how about posting them?  I'd really like to see what you all have in your collections.  I bet there are some real beauties out there too.  If you wouldn't mind talking about the Bear TD with the latch system, I'd like to read it and learn more about them.  I may find out I have to have one some day.

Post 'em if ya got 'em.

Thanks for your time and help.

GREAT PICS.....Thanks for posting them.  I KNOW there's more out there though so lets see 'em.

Also, if someone doesn't mind taking a bit of time to explain to me the differences of the Risers and limbs that were made in that latch style.  What is a Type 1, B style?  I have no clue but I think the B style refers to riser length.  Is that true?  Can someone help?

Also how do these Bear Latch TD's compare to the NEW Bows of today like the Widows and such?  Can the Bears hold their own?  I am betting they can.

I'd LOVE to HAVE one someday.  What does a good condition USED one go for?  I guess the good thing is that I could always buy the riser and get the limbs later if I didn't have the money for the whole bow.

Thanks for your time and help.

Here" my C handle. This sweetheart is pretty much NIB. It's one of the nicest original finish bows I own. I don't usually go after the take-downs and I'm not sure if I'll hang on to it long(got my eye on a different treasure)but this one I couldn't pass up.

I noticed on the spec. sheet Tom I posted earlier that the C was a 24" handle. This one is 26",it"s written on the box by hand. Do any of you TD guy's Know more about this length of c handle?  (http://i471.photobucket.com/albums/rr72/gbsticknstring/IMG_7938-1.jpg)

Hate to change the thread, I'll post more detailed pics on a new one if anyone wants to see some

Greg, you should probably look into this bows history a bit further. From what I can tell from the photo, this is a very early edition of the TD, Later models had the fiberglass extending to the latch on the belly side if I'm not mistaken and may have been two inches shorter. Nice handle.                             Grant

Grant - sticknstring+ started another thread about the C Riser length..

 http://tradgang.com/noncgi/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=14;t=001877

- I have C1100 it measures 26" from hinge screw to hinge screw, the same as shown in sticknstring+ photograph in the other thread referenced above.

John - This is the signed T/D riser you should have... Fred inscribed it to another John that we both know... “GOOD HUNTING JOHN”, then Fred signed it “FRED BEAR 1987”.

I know you have seen this bow several times before. You might even be successful in talking me out of it...

Wade, what's the serial #? I get one is B 5259, of what a year could it be?
Title: Re: Any Pics of Bear TD Recurves??
Post by: Wade Phillips on February 06, 2009, 03:23:00 PM
caciatore - I'm not a T/D collector and would prefer to stay out serial number vs year discussion/controversy on the T/D Risers.

If no one responds to you about your B 5259 serial number, you may want to post the same question on this Trad Gang thread...

Cacciatore B-5259 sounds like that would be a green stripe B riser from around 1983-1985 somewhere in there...bd

The first 39th Birthday Celebration for the “Jack Benny A”, September 2008, – Refinished A1319 after its first leg to the mid-western’s triple crown…

A little tape to dull up the riser overlays… Not a looker but a functional hunting T/D Riser especially suited for travel…

BowDoc - Yes, I got it from you in the spring of 2008. Thanks for mentioning its pedigree. It is a small world of collectibles. Trades and sales are a never ending circle. I have owned the same bow 2 and 3 times, but haven't got back some of those that I'd like to get back the most.

Put a nice scuff on the coin side of the Jack Benny A last fall but the finish is thick enough, that I was able to sand it, then rub it out. Being refinished, it doesn't have the beauty or value of an all original, but functionally, it serves as a nice hunting riser that you don't mind getting a scratch or two on, like you would an all original.

OK LH guys, where is the best hunting, Italy or France ?

Hi Wade,
well, here in France, I hunt Muflons, Wild Boar and roe deer. You can ask to "Waldo" if he liked DIGNE LES BAINS.

roofleakfixer - I got the Riser in 2008. I grew up listening to Jack Benny who always said he was 39 years old. On his 22nd 39th Birthday Party, he was actually 61 years old, but still claimed to be 39. You may have grown up listening to someone other than Jack Benny.

If the A Riser was actually first made in 1969, in 2008 when I got this Riser, it was 39 years old, thus the name "Jack Benny A". In September 2008 I took an antelope and a mule deer with it in Wyoming, then used it on whitetails around home. I've hunted only with 1959 and 1960 Kodiaks for years, except when I have to fly, but wanted to break in the "Jack Benny A" on its first 39th Birthday... Frankly, it makes a very nice traveling bow, but I am going back to my old Kodiaks full time.

All collectors are crazy, some more so than others...

Sorry Wade, but looking at the serving of your A1319, were you using a FF string with B&W tip limbs?

cacciatore - I make all my own stings and have never made nor used an all Fast Flight string on any of my bows. The string on the Jack Benny A is 16 strands of B-50. What you see in the photograph is the Braided Serving .026" Fast Flight. I use this serving because it holds up to a lot of abuse.

Danny - Sorry, but I don't want to part with the Jack Benny A right now. It's not really a handsome riser, and certainly not a serious collectible or valuable item as it was refinished, but makes for a good hunting riser. I'm not planning to use it anytime soon, but if I feel I want to use it at some point in the future, I know it is there and will perform. I'd much just keep it than have to find another someday, if I wanted to use one again.

If you are looking for a first year Grayling T/D, just keep checking the auctions, it seems that several show up in the span of a single year.

You might even what to start a thread... something to the effect... "Are any 1st year Bear T/D risers available for hunters or are the Bear Collectors hording all of them?"

You might get an interesting response...

Good Luck in your search.
