To celebrate the 50th Birthday of some of the greatest bows ever built, I'm going to make a standing offer. There are a few stipulations so please pay attention.
I know many of you are planning on heading to the woods this fall with your favorite 1959 model bow and I want you to share your setup and maybe even your hunts with us. It doesnt have to be a Kodiak. It can be a Grizzly, a Polar, a Kodiak Special, a Pearson, a Wing etc.
I'll send a repro feather rest to anyone that shows a picture of a 1959 bow that they plan to hunt with and ready to hit the woods. Bow, quiver, arrows broadheads, The whole package. This will be on the honor system. If your 59 is too pristine to hunt with there will be many other threads to showcase it on. This is for the workhorses out there. The meat collectors, so to speak.
Something like this, you know, all dressed up and ready to go. This isnt the bow I'm going to hunt with but you get the idea.
Feel free to tell us about your setup and share harvests pics as the seasons progress. Maybe some turkeys, antelope, deer, Bears, rabbits, geese, whatever. Well almost whatever. Maybe just some hunting photos with your 59 featured of course.
This could be alot of fun and if the thread falls down hill it will be easy to search for to claim your rest or post a pic. Just remember "Happy Birthday 59"
Sound good? I have about 10 rests ready to go and Spring turkey season is just around the corner so get busy setting them up and taking pics.

Sweet pic Daryl. Can't wait for this thread to take-off.
-
I'am in..........bd
-
I will be taking the one that the Doc is working on now to the woods.
-
BH you maybe better come on up north ahh ? along with myself Shaun and a few others useing the old girls to try and arrow a bear with a Bear this spring.
I do have a kind of standing offer...well maybe to get it printed in an archery magazine. No big name magazine but may still be cool just the same.Might be cool to read something like 7 bears for 7 sisters after 50 years.Or maybe 9 bears for 9 brothers.Going to different schools together and now the class of 1959 reunionen and the who's who...hell yeah I'am in.this one better known as the purple haze.bd (http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/ii175/bowdocsarchery/mine001.jpg) (http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/ii175/bowdocsarchery/mine002.jpg)

I'm in...got my feather rest just a couple of days ago. (not yet installed) Thanks Daryl, beautiful work!

That quivers nice TRAP.Is that my old one.Looks good on the bow no doubt!I will se about posting a pic of my 59er.
-
Trap – This 1959 Kodiak is a real piece of lumber, Brazilian Rosewood... “The Beast” 80#, signed by Glenn St. Charles. Will be taking along this fall as back up the back up bow to the 59 "Old Spot". “The Beast” really spits out this 1959 Bear Giant Razorhead. The Ultimate Heavy Duty “All 59” Bear Bow & Bear Broadhead Set up”….
-
Wow I mean no disrespect Mr Phillips but can you pull 80#'s...no BS....come on no bs eather and nextly would you feel good shooting 80# on the style and year bow ? and nextly since your handing out FREE broadheads this week what the heck your old buddy bd is at 220 sw bla bla bla.I just had to do that.I love you man....bd
-
BowDoc – At my age everything seems to be getting stiffer, except what should be. Haven't quite worked up to "The Beast" yet this winter, that is why its present status is #3, the backup to the backup for 2009. A few years back, I quit taking along my old backup to the backup, a 100# 1957 Kodiak (little brother to Bill Negley's 102# Elephant bow). Looks like 09 is shaping up to be an All-1959 year, so may have to dig deep into the antique archery arsenal and give some of the old dust catching 59s a well deserved workout.
-
My backup is a 454 Casull w/ 245 gr hollow points. Very effective plan "B" when a bear takes special interest in a bowhunter. My backup to my backup will be my hunting partner with a 1100 12 gauge with a slug barrel, firing 1 1/4 ounce Brenneke slugs. I've concluded that pepper spray is just a spicy seasoning for the bears.... never bring a knife to a gun fight...
-
I'm trying to figure out your "setup" there Wade. I see there's no arrow. Do you just throw that Giant razorhead at an animal because the bow is too heavy to draw? ;)
Thanks for the pics Guys, they sure look better to me when they are loaded up than when they're just hangin around on a bow rack.
Keep them coming, Trap
-
My main bow this season will be a 60", '59 Kodiak in 47#. I have not yet decided on arrows.

This thread could get GOOOOOD
Rests are on the way guys.
Thanks Eric and yes that is your old quiver. It looks right at home.

Show us how it is done! Way to go Trap!! I am in and here's my bow with your rest already applied and ready to hunt. I'll be shooting ash arrows with some Bear razorheads.
-
Wow Bjorn, that's one of my old "prototype" rests with fake feathers and a high profile.
Sweet bow, but we can do better on that rest.
Is that your 50#er?
Maybe on your Mid Febuary Hog Hunt that 59 will bring some special MOJO and you can add the first 59 harvest to this thread.
Trap
-
Fake feathers aykm? Yes, that is the 50#,can't do the 57# justice anymore. Hafta' shoot the 50# and make some arrows to get ready.
-
"Real" feathers, "articifial" bars ;)
Trap
-
I got a 1959 Grizzly 46#er rock solid shooter all original condition not mint but solid.I have a feather rest on it as well.I was gonna sell the griz for like 12.50 however I want 450.00 for the feather rest and I won't break them up sorry........bd
-
:scared:
-
Doc, I may be interested in your feather rest if Florida outbids me.
-
Oh yeah we can hunt with Grizzlies too........
'59 Griz with a Bubinga sight window

And a Butcher Block riser............
It is 53#; and it now has the correct coin. I did not have the right leather for the wrap, and it needs the proper feather rest of course!
-
Shaun I need you to win that one with the paper work and arrows off gbay.Man I want to look that stuff over badly...bd
-
That's a beauty Bjorn,
Trap
-
some day i will figure out how to post pic's hear. That bow is going to texas to kill some javies in Feburay.

-
I got me 8 1959 Bill Sweetland forgewoods and will dig into my broadhead stash and see if I got some early bear razorheads to go with the package to Que'bec for bear this spring...
Quivers we gotta talk quivers. One of you guy's have a scan of the Bear catalog page showing the quivers for 1959 ? bd
-
back quivers or bow quivers Doc?
Trap
-
Doc,
sent you an email with p.12 of the 1959 catalog
-
back quivers and bow quivers both...Thanks Falk I check the pic of the tape on and the screw on for 1959.I don't have a tape on.I got 3 different year screw on.I'am certin the middle quiver could not be a 1959 because it has no silk screen pat.number on the hood the hood is original black color rather then brown maybe 1954-1955-ish and there is no slot for the bleeder blade on the back where the single arrow mounts eather.
The quiver on the rightside of the pic has all the correct numbers No.2,464,068 and No.3,209,176 the last pat no.though is more from 1961-1962-ish ???
The quiver on the leftside of the pic does have the bleeder blade slot but only has one pat No.2,464,068 which I thought was 1958-1960-ish ??? bd
-
May have been a Bear Archery custom shop bow at that draw weight and lettered there ? it does look original..bd
-
John - Thanks for posting the photograph of AA039. What is the weight on that one? I’m guessing it has a purple heart sight window? Hey I would even bet on that, if anyone is interested in betting…
Shaun – Your Butcher Block Coin Slab 1959 Grizzly is a cool bow. In my entire life, I have only ever said that about one other Grizzly.
BowDoc – Bear Bow Quivers – Patent No. 2,464,068 was filed Jan 16, 1946 and granted March 8, 1949. Patent No. 3,209,740 was filed Dec 29, 1961 and granted Oct 5, 1965. I also have additional pre-1961 documentation from Fred himself about another quiver I have seen only one example of to date.
BowDoc – Your no slot, no patent #, black bow quiver is the first production Leather Cap. In the No Slot, I have both RH & LH, as well as No Logo and With Logo Only (no pat #s). While far from common, I have seen several other No Slot quivers show up over the years. They nearly always seem to be a nice conversation piece accompanied by much speculation and folklore. You mention 1954-1955-ish for the year. I have 1956 as the earliest documented date, so I will dig a little deeper, and round up all the usual suspects.
Trap – You may have to clarify this a bit, do you want to see bow quivers used that were the models available only in 1959, or all bow quivers that were available in 1959 and before. Either way, I can post photographs of any or all of these Bear Bow quivers if you wish.
-
Wade, it is Bjorn's Griz on pg 2. but I do think its cool.
I am also interested in what bow and/or back quivers were available on or before '59. Were the Indian canoe stamped back quivers around then?
Just picked up my first 1959 off the auction. So, I'm in for the Happy Birthday 59 hunt with my new 56" 45# @ 27" compass handle sweetie. I'm thinking I only had to pay about a C over what its worth. Then again, they are worth what someone is will to pay as you all have said in other posts. 300287819072
I'll post a photo of the set up when I get it and have the rest of the period gear assembled.
-
Wade, I was just hoping to see everyone's 2009 hunting setup featuring 1959 equipment,
Show me a bow ready to hit the woods that you plan to hunt with during this 50th Birthday year and I'll send you a feather rest.
I welcome any other pictures people want to submit to the thread. I don't think anyone gets tired of eye candy.
Congrats Shaun, you're ruined forever now.
Trap
-
Ok now where's Johnnyboy ? and Trap...you guy's caused me to have to install a quiver bushing in my own 1959 now so's I can use the 1959 screw on quiver....
Wade not that its any big deal or more value other then to me.I got the no slot quiver from Frank Scott as a tip for some bow work I did for him.He also said what you said it was one of the first leather cap production type bow quivers.I've sold a couple other no slot but they did have the brown hoods.thanks for the pat no.info...bd

Haven't decided which to hunt with this year. The few times I got out last year the '59 Grizzly was with me (53#, refurbished by Bjorn). The KSpecial (64" 53#) was refinished, but the Kodiak (64" 52#) and Polar (64" 50#) are both original with the exception of the strikeplates and the rug on the Kodiak. I'd be surprised if the Polar was shot more than half a dozen times in 50 years and the Kodiak looks to be about the same except for the stains on the leather. Dang near flawless the pair of them! The wood on the Kodiak is amazing:
Notably missing from the lineup is the '59 Alaskan (I don't count the Panda :) ). I had a sweet Alaskan, it left the rack to make room for (and funds for) the Kodiak.
Everything but the arrows in this pic came from Frank and Shell. Does this count as decked out for hunting? Do I get a rest? :D LOL!
-
Thanks for the pics Jeremy, sure, that Polar setup qualifies for a rest. PM me your address.
The wood in that 59K is smokin
Trap
-
Good looking stuff there Jeremy...bd
-
Hope you photographed the bushing installation process for the restoration thread Doc.
You'll love it Brother, You know you will.
Trap
-
Well its looking like today may be bushing hole drilling day.Its friggen 20 degree's at my place and there is just no way to spray in those temps.I would be shakening so bad it would be hard to get any finish on the bows.bd
-
Doc-First the bushing,now the compass.You are under my power.Now close your eyes.You're getting sleepy...sleepy...slee..ZZZZZZZZZZ
Now pack up all of your Kodiaks and send them to Johnnyboy.
Like Trap said, you're gonna love it!!
-
Jeremy that '59 has about the best riser ever! I wonder if that was originally for someone special?

pic test
(http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/aa277/DUCK_TRAP/GrizzlyandBearRests012.jpg)
-
Bjorn, I think the guy just got lucky when he ordered the Kodiak. If there was any real history to the bow I'm sure I would have heard it (and paid for it!) All my '59s have really nice rosewood, but the Kodiak is something else!
-
Saun you scored with that '59. You woulda' paid more if I hadn't forgot the auction was ending! :p
-
Oh yeah I remember the bow now..........it is a '60; and very nice.
-
It was advertised as '59 but I wondered about the black and white overlays. When it arrives tomorrow I will post some pics and see if the serious collectors can help me out with the vintage.
Bjorn, you are getting very sleepy, just watch the bright shinny object swinging back and forth, your eyelids are becoming heavy. There is nothing you need to bid on until the '59 K comes around in 4 days - its item 140297065142. When I snap my fingers you will awake with nothing on your mind but that bow in 4 days, there is nothing til then, there is nothing til then........
-
Hopefully, I'll be joining in the party here shortly...
Jerry
-
Shaun that may be a 1960 rather then 1959 you may be looking to trade hummmmmmm.
JL wish ya all the best.Keep us posted..bd
-
Shaun - Shaun - I believe your bow will prove to be a 1960. I just left you a PM. My email is not working right now, however, I can receive a PM...
-
just wait a year and you will be ready for his 51st lol
-
Yes Kurt's right we'll all be looking for 1960's next year.Besides Shaun if its not the correct year I would be happy to lend you mine while we're in Que'bec this spring..bd
-
Thanks Shaun us old guys need all the help we can get! You scored either way the shortie Kodiaks have been going for a lot more.
A 56" Kodiak is the real deal! I have a 50# 56" 1960 that is an awesome shooter!
-
You're welcome Bjorn!
-
Sorry bd, I know you wanted me to win that bid for the 64" K with the arrows and the papers but some commie pinko ^($)&^$ , er I mean, some fine fellow collector with an eye for a classic and the good sense to out snipe me, ended up with it.
Meanwhile, I am planning to spend the afternoon tomorrow with the new short 60 if it shows up on schedule. Is it 50 years old if I'm standing in Australia ? - they have some kind of date line between here and there, might be worth it.
-
Heck yes Shaun you should like that one as those are pretty good shooters.I actually think the 1960 is a bit better shooter then the 1959 in 56 60 and 64 inch models.I like them all.bd
-
Well, I'm the commie SOB. I put my back to the wall and beat off Shaun and another sniper.
Hope there are no hard feelings Shaun. Congrats on the '60 also, thats a sweetheart right there.
I've never paid that much for a bow, especially one that needs work, but I think the 64" will work well for my 30" draw.
Now I've got to deal with those tips, and dress it up for spring turkey hunting.
Can't wait to open that arrow box and smell Grayling!!
-
We'll be waiting for pics..bd
-
How about pictures of others makes of 1959 bows and equipment? My brother had a Herters I think was 59 nice looking bow.
Dean
-
Got to learn the photobucket thing and get some pics up.
-
Oh yeah any 1959 bow or tackle is legal to post.Fact is I have a 1959 Shakespeare I gonna post some pics of later this morning...bd
-
Brad, congratulations on that fine bow. You are sure right about 64" being good for your longer draw. Definitely no hard feelings, glad to see the bow in the TG community.
Now that my Alaskan has been officiated by bd and others as "59ish" I plan to set it up for the Bday hunt and get some photos posted.
Uh oh, UPS is here... gotta go play with the new shorty bow.
-
Congrats Brad, that's a great looking bow.
Hope to see pics soon.
Trap
-
Well, if I can't get my maple sight window '59 done before season, then I will most likely hunt with this one. It's a 60",48#er in near mint condition.

There's no compass in that bow either John. Do You need to borrow a Forstner bit? :bigsmyl:
I love the arrows, I think my next batch will be dipped full length white.
Thanks for the pics, Trap
-
I think I need a compass now, nope wait its a Sexton :D
-
Trap,
There's no compass in that bow "yet".Send me that Forstner bit so I can get drilling!I'm putting this one right in the sight window.

:bigsmyl:
-
I just had a couple 1959 Kodiak Specials stop bye for a little visit. Both seem to be pretty good bows one 62" 59# and the other is 64" 52#.I'll try and get a few pics loaded..bd
-
Here's a couple of work horses 59# and 52# ..bd (http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/ii175/bowdocsarchery/kspec005.jpg)
-
WOW a 59# 62" KS. That bow will smoke one.
I love my 50#er.
Trap
-
I'll get a string on them later today. If I get time this weekend I may shot all 3 bows thru the chrony see which one is the fastest just wondering..I already know which one will cast an arrow the longest distance. That would be the 52# 64" 1959 Kodiak Special. One of the 2 or maybe both of those Specials will most likely be hitting the class.add in the next couple weeks.I got 5 bows on friday and will not be able to buy them all...I just dropped 400.00 thursday on new lights for my paint booth...bd (http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/ii175/bowdocsarchery/5bows001.jpg)
-
Hey bd, let me know if the 52# KSpecial is hitting the classifieds. I have one w/ exact same stats and love it. That middle bow in your first pic is calling to me too (64" and 51#??)
So much eye candy in this thread!
-
You have all the cool toys.
Who made the long bow, doc?
Bottom Grizzly? has a little character mark.
Kurt
-
Bowdoc check your PM's.
-
The long bow in the middle is a Morgan which I will most likely keep that one I been waiting several years to get it.
Kurt your slipping in your old age.The bottom bow is a 1959 Kodiak with the leather grip removed.bd (http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/ii175/bowdocsarchery/59002-2.jpg)
-
Old age?? I'm from Ca.,more like short term memory loss. :knothead:
Can you post a full pic of the Morgan?? looks like a stunner.
Is the 59 K, with grizzly bite marks, going on the block??
Kurt
-
Long term loss of short term memory, a common problem with a certain age demographic (Old Hippies).
-
I gotta get those bows strung up and checked out later this morning.I been a little busy preping bows to start spraying this week. Here's the 59 Kodiak I got.Real nice bow 60" 45#er but does have one small problemo...bd (http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/ii175/bowdocsarchery/59er002.jpg)
-
Doc, I sure would like a 59 for this years hunt. with a baby on the way not sure if it is possibble but let me know when you decide to unload one in 45-55# range.
-
Here's my first entry "Halloween" Alsaskan. This bow is cleaned up, new string, quiver arrow holder replaced and arrows tuned. Ready for a hog/javelina trip in about 10 days.
The arrows are possibly Sweetlands - very dense 5/16 that weigh with tip 475. It is a tack driver with these and the paint job that they came with is a perfect match to the bow.
Claiming my feather rest for another bow - the recent Polar - in red if possible.
-
PM me with an address Shaun. Hope to see some Javelina or hog pics on the thread soon.
Cool bow, I just picked up a 55# Halloween bow(Alaskan). They are intersting no doubt, and kinda surprising shooters.

looking good Shaun!

OK, here's set up #2
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v613/shaunw/2090001.jpg)
And the pair ready to go to Texas.
The quiver is a King and the arrows are "Arrow by Raulf", not all Bear, but a well matched set.
Trap, I don't expect a second freebee, put a couple extra feather rests in the first package and add in invoice. I need one for this bow and an extra.
What's that on the top of the last photo? Gotta go to town and will post about that project when I get back. Just a little playtime with osage and thoughts about old whatisname - Fred's bowyer.
-
Count me in! Got my '59 in this morning and first impressions tell me we are going to get along just fine...

That's awesome JL. what are the specs on the birthday girl? Send me a PM with an addy, please.
That's a beauty Shaun, I would have assumed you would be hunting with that custom "Nimrod" back quiver.
I can't wait till the harvests start piling up with these beauties.
Rests will be on the way guys.

Dang, you all got me turnin green with envey.
I think a better paying side job is on the list of things to do soon.
Great bunch of workhorses in this thread. Hope you keep em comin!

Finally took some time today to figure out the photo bucket thing. Hopefully these will work.

These are the 64" X 50# '59 I bought on the bay 3 weeks ago. The bow is perfect weight and smooth draw and release for me. No stress and the grip isn't even sweated brown (yet). Got Traps rest and a Raineman string. Too long for a turkey blind, but nice for still hunting in Maine this fall.
Now the bad..
I've super glued this tip for 50 shots but don't want to push it. Kurt sent some new tip material to make this beauty all she can be. Time to sharpen a knife and break out the dremel. :bigsmyl:

Sure is nice!

That's a nice one! Almost makes me wish I didn't stop looking at fleabay!

Back from Texas and claiming the first "Happy Birthday '59" hunt and critter. I took this fine dog coyote last week near Odessa with the 44# Alaskan and a razorhead.

-
Shaun,
That is quite an accomplishment.A coyote with an old '59 Alaskan.Nice picture too.Congratulations!!!
-
I hear ya about the bay, but I havent found any good stuff locally. The midwest seems to be Trad gear central.
Mostly glad I conquered the picture posting, (with a gentle prod from Trap)I really enjoy looking at all you guys pics and now I can share some.
-
Shaun thats a beaut. I hear dogs are tough to shoot with a bow, did you call him in?
-
Congrats on the yote Shaun!

WooHoooooo
That's a nice one Brad
Thanks for Sharing.
Shaun, Way to go, Congrats on the "song dog" and the first 59 harvest. Awesome!!!!!
Can't wait till turkey season.
Trap

Shaun, thats a beuuutiful yote. How do those things taste? :bigsmyl:

Outstanding accomplishment Shaun!!
Great pic too.
-
Gee whiz Shaun you could have given the rest of us time to get our bows strung. That is super cool song dog with a 50 year old bow.Guess what ? you da man this week.....bd
-
Shawn - Great going on the coyote. Glad to see you with the first kill with a Bear Alaskan and Razorhead.
Noticed there are still 2 arrows in your bow quiver, in keeping with the true Fred Bear style. Rarely did Fred have more than one or two arrows in his quiver after a kill.
-
Shawn..nice going. :archer:
-
Took this photo before taking the shot with the Alaskan. Water hole ambush...

Very nice work Shaun!
My partner and I tried coyote calling and hunting in eastern WA for a couple days last week. We saw 7, but could not get them in close enough for a shot.
Coyote with a trad bow is a tougher task than a P&Y whitetail IMHO.
-
Had time to get a before shot picture!!
Man thats a great hunt, Awesome job
-
way to go Shaun! :clapper:
-
Wade, I finished up the repairs on the Alaskan quiver you gave me. Lexol and elbow grease followed by lt tan and redish brown boot polish, new separator and zipper ties added. Ready for the next Happy B-day '59 outing. Thanks so much for the tour of your collection and the hospitality... and of course this fine quiver.

Congats,nice yoty

Shawn - Almost didn't recognize the quiver. Glad you were able to bring new life to it. Hope by the end of the Happy BD 59 season, you have it filled with only bloody arrows.

Why aren't there any turkeys posted on this thread yet?
Our season opens Monday and I'm going to do my best to remedy that ;)

Mattie and I changed my luck on turkeys today but it wasan't easy got 4 jakes and a tom to come in. Of course as usual I missed the tom in full strut faceing away from me at 10 yards but I made good on the the second shot on a jake and the tracking job was about 25 yards. Hope I can get some one to post some pic's for me.

Great Job Doug! Wonderful way to celebrate the 50th. Hopefully some of your karma can rub off and the rest of us will get a turkey in tight this spring--in my case I need 3. One miss high, one miss low and hopefully one in the boiler room.
Congrats!

I'll be in the woods with the "Junker" that Doc resurrected for the next couple of weeks.
I added a leathertop bolt-on and some "camo pants". The bow is just too shiny to go naked.

Finally...just about ready. My turkey season begins next week and I got the '59 Polar cleaned up and shooting, mounted a reasonably period-correct quiver, but those arrows and late heads just don't cut it!
Anybody happen have 2 or 3 'shooter' Razorheads from '59 they want to part with? :help:
Oh yeah, and keep your fingers crossed for the late Michigan turk season. Thanks!

Glad you finally connected on a 59 Kenny. I know you've been searching for a bit.
Bill, beautiful bows. How do you like that 62" KS Screamer?
Trap
-
Beautiful Kodiak Bill!
-
Trap-
I refer to that K Special as a HCW Model. The HCW stands for Hidden Compund Wheels. It's the only think that accounts for the speed!
Actually it's a "Val Refined" bow - later owned by Bowdoc and now me. Bowdoc has a thread or 3 on here talking about the speed of that bow.
-
Bill,
I must have something here you could trade me that '59 for.
-
Richard-
The Kodiak or the Kodiak Special?

The Kodiak of course but I know that one is "off limits" so I'm just razzin you.

ONly thing I can think of is a certain safe and all of its contents.

The hunt started long before I made it to Canada.Back in the early spring I started praticing every day with my 1959 Kodiak. Not just shooting arrows but praticing at the 2-4 yard distance we would be shooting at bears.I praticed with bow arrow quiver broadhead and head shrinker I would use on the hunt.
I for one never believe just because its so near of a shot I can make it without a little pratice.I've been on plenty of hunts where some folks myself included believe just because its only 6-9 feet sometimes they can make that shot placment easy.not gonna happen everytime believe me.You add hair and a heart beat plus shooting a critter that can be up that tree faster then you can think...you should be able to do everything in one smooth even movement.I pratice while setting down and making a slow least amount of movement smooth even fluid draw for several weeks before going and it works good for me.
When the time came to shoot I felt I was 100% ready and able to place the 625 grain arrow right where it needed to be.The 50 year old Kodiak made the shot just as we planned and the razorhead tipped bill sweetland arrow did thier work in less then 30 yards...bd
-
Sounds like a blast. Way to go !!!!!

Hmmm. Nice Grizzly you got there Doug. It might be a 1960 though. Are the tips fiberglass? If so I am sorry to say it’s not a 1959. The sight window on my 59 Griz is dark rosewood and on my 1960 Griz, it’s like yours, a much lighter redish brown. Great shooters and lookers for sure.
Simon
-
Simon, I think Doug's Griz is Bubinga site window. That's what mine has. However, you can't see the bottom of the riser to see if 1 or 2 chevrons. Also hard to tell in the pic if the tips are paper or glass.
-
I bet it shoots good and it's quiet as a mouse, whichever it is.

I'm heading up to Seboomook point on Moosehead lake in northern Maine next month. Wanted to show off my resurected '59 60x46 Kodiak.
Holding the tape on quiver with thin rubber tourniquets like the lab tech uses for a blood draw. The stretchy rubber holds great, but will need some camo tape to cover.
The arrows are homemade, my first batch, not pretty but they fly well. I think Fred would understand my slight digression from all '59 gear
Really looking forward to this years hunt.

Took "Old Spot" out of retirement for his 50th Birthday celebration. We started the party in Wyoming last week...
Doc's file and Grant's glove both worked great.
It was great to get back in our old camp in the badlands of Wyoming. "Old Spot" did his normal magic for me. A mule deer and two antelope somehow managed to get in the way of three of my normally mis-directed arrows.
I just can not say enough good about Grant's remake of Fred Bear's personal shooting glove. It works!!! Has to be a combination of Fred's great design, a mental thing about the glove, and Grant's expertise in leather workmanship.
Even made up one special arrow for the trip. Spray painted one shaft and broadhead black, fletched it with 3 black feathers, black nock, and inscribed it in white "THE BLACK ARROW - ITS RESULTS ARE ALWAYS FINAL. ROBIN HOOD 1938"... Actually the results were final, just like in the 1938 movie, "The Adventures of Robin Hood".

Bernie -
I started bow hunting in 1958 as an 11 year old youngster, and started bow hunting antelope in 1975 as a 28 year old kid. The first 11 antelope I killed were all by stalking. I could run over the hills all day long as a lean 160 pound kid. Then finally, the years caught up to me, my knees gave out, and I got old, and fat. So I realized that had to either change my strategy or stay home. Staying at home wasn't an option, so I started hunting antelope mostly from a blind. Five of the last six antelope I have killed were shot from blinds at waterholes. I try to set up the blinds so the shots are pretty close. Only one of the five shot from blinds was over 20 yards.
In my very limited experience of killing only 17 antelope, the 12 taken by stalking mean a lot more to me then the 5 taken at waterholes, simply because I worked a lot harder for those by stalking and it was always a lot more fun to run over the hills, then it is now to set in a blind.
Hour per hour blind hunting over water holes for antelope is far more productive, if the conditions are right. Last year in camp, it rained like hell 9 of the first 10 days we were there. Far from ideal conditions for blind hunting over water holes... Fortunately, last year, I hunted for 3 continuous weeks in Wyoming and the weather got a little better later on.
I still hunt mule deer by stalking, but now in my old age, I know enough about the haunts they frequent in our area that I don't have to cover a fraction of the miles I did 30 years ago to get close to them.
-
Trap and Bernie -
I guess the best advise I could give anyone about getting close to an antelope is set up a well concealed blind at a small water hole that antelope are known to frequent, and wait for as long as it takes for one to get close to you.
-
Nicely done Wade. You still got what it takes for an old man.LOL What a beautiful set of items.
-
Good job Wade!
-
congrats Wade. Well done. :clapper: :clapper: :clapper:
-
Thanks guys. Not really much to shooting “Old Spot”, just sort of point him in the general direction and he always seems to know what to do next.
Just now realized that the first day in camp, when I inscribed the “Black Arrow”, that I misquoted the line in “The Adventures of Robin Hood”. I used the word “results” rather than “verdict”. Errol Flynn’s line was “… Its verdict is always final.”
Also made up my “Black Arrow” a little differently than those used in the movie. I used three black feathers rather than the three white feathers on Flynn’s “Black Arrows” when he shot the bad guys and shot the arrow into the paper that was lying on the table.
Figured the all black “Black Arrow” was the ideal camouflage for hunting from a blind that is all black inside.
Guess that “Black Arrow” will have to be retired. Will make up another one with three white feathers more like those in the movie, which were cut fairly close to the shape of the feathers that Saxton Pope cut his to on his arrows.
Will also inscribe the correct words on this “Black Arrow” - “… Its verdict is always final.”
-
very nice Wade a great tribute to old spot for his 50th birthday.
The bd's 50 year old Kodiak worked super good on its 50th birthday elk & mule deer hunt. The bow itself shot flawlessly as always. However somewhere on or around sept.1st when the season opened the 57 year old nut on the handle came loss for some odd reason and I could not tighten it up.It was all down hill from there.I would like to add I did manage to scare the hell right out of a few critter with the old 59 Kodiak though.bd

Heads Up! LH 59 Kodiak, 64", 50# kodiak immacutely restored by Bowdoc, great shape, going to the big auction Saturday. Hard to find a nicer one but I want to reduce my inventory of duplicate bows and I am selling several the next couple of months.

Been out alot with the Grizzly, seen alot of deer, just hasn't come together yet.
When I got home tonight I shot the '59 and the '59/'60 transition Griz in the basement. I had one group of 4 arrows all touching, two from each bow. I really like Grizzlys! :bigsmyl:

A "Special" hunt....Kodiak Special that is.
I just returned home last night from a hunt at my Grandfathers farm in Crockett,Texas. As is with alot of traditions, hunting on the family farm is always something special.
I've harvested many deer and much bigger deer in my life but none as special as this Buck. It was the first Traditional kill of my short career shooting a recurve. I used the first bow I choose to do a restoration job on,1959 Kodiak Special 64" #50 and since I've been shooting it the most, I felt that it was the one to go with.
The acorns have started falling in earnest and I knew I didnt want to take a shot outside my comfort zone so I set my limit to 20 yards or so and felt if I choose the right tree I could get closer. My goal this year was to take a Doe or Feral Hog which are in abundance around our property. I didnt want to get too far ahead of myself and thinking I deserved a Buck yet.
As luck would have it, I did get my first shot off at a Doe that was coming into feed with a couple others. I hunt from an elevated tree stands some lock-ons, a Tri-pod,and a climber. I was in the climber at about 15ft.and and the Doe past at approximately 12-13 yards, she gave me a good broadside shot, the shot right to left was good I just missed on the aim high 2"-3" between her ducking some and having never shot my bow from a tree it was a learning experience to say the least.
Approximately 45 mins before dark an younger 8pt Buck [Texas count:)]came cruising in looking for a date. But the date wasnt what I think he had in mind. As I looked him over to be sure he met the minimum antler restriction in our county I had decided he did, he had closed within 10 yards of my stand location.
I figured I would draw and get set paying close attention to my anchor point and aim to make certain I send the arrow on it's intended path. At about 5-6 yards and must have got a whiff of me and stopped then looked up, we both made eye contact and then without delay I released my arrow, however short the flight was true, due to the great feather rest constructed by Trap. (Thanks Trap!)
So I have far exceeded my expectations and look forward to many more Traditional hunts in the future....

Congrats Chris!
A beautiful buck.
-
I was lucky enough to get three chances tonight. I've missssssed 4 (four) times this year prior to the last shot I took tonight.
I've practiced from elevated stands at home and still missed.
The third shot tonight, I really had time to make everything feel right, and concentrated harder and was rewarded with this nice fat button buck.

you know guys, this my be my favorite trad-gang thread ever!!! As a pictoral study of 59' kodiaks and such...it was a visual delite!! I shoot a 59' repro, so I'm living vicariously through those who actually have one. I just loved the repro "fred Bear" shooting glove...who made that?? I think this thread personifies what trad-gang is all about....i guess 16 pages of it tell the tale....the good old stuff still hauls the bacon pretty darn well....I'm envious....john

Man you guys are making me drool all over myself. I haven't been able to score a 59 yet but I'm still looking.

Thanks to Jackdaw(John),I too enjoy this thread.I just ordered an Ed Holcomb 59 repro. This in my opinion is the most beautiful bow ever made.
