Title: Homemade Wooden Ladder Stands
Post by: Seeking Trad Deer on January 28, 2007, 08:27:00 PM
Anyone out there make their own wooden ladder stands?  Do you use pressure treated or regular?  Any plans or tips you have found helpful?  I'm thinking of making one or two this winter for a project.  Thanks.   :notworthy:

I've made  few,my plan now would be to buy a steel one due to the high cost of treated lumber and the safety factor, nails and screws work loose, most of the manufactured ladder stands are safe and usually come with a harness which everyone should wear!!   JMO

You can catch metal ladderstands on sale at BP, and Cabelas, 15 footers for 60-70 bucks!!! I bought 2 last fall, at BP for 60 apiece. Like Kenny said, complete with safety harnesses! Safe, sturdy, and with a little camo touch up paint, blend in quite well, killed a deer out of each!!!

That's what I do now, too. I've built a bunch of wood stands over the years, but even with treated lumber, they don't last forever, they're heavier than metal, and treated lumber is expensive. I bought stands last year at Dick's for $59 - 16' with padded seat and safety harness - hard to beat that.

I used to have wooden ladder stands all over my hunting grounds.

They serve 2 purposes #1 They are "permanent" and #2 They are "portable"

Let me explain.....They are permanent because they are HEAVY!!!!! I have NEVER had a wodden ladder stand stolen.However.....They are still portable with a little help.It you set one up on a field edge and you notice deer coming out of the same corner every night,You can go back one day around lunch time and move the stand within range of the "hot" corner. After a couple of days the deer will be used to it and you can start hunting from it again.

One other thing I feel I must add.....I do NOT,like elevated stands!!!!! All of the ladder stands that I build are made from standard 7'6" - 2"x4" building studs and they are under 8' high. They are just used to allow me to "see alittle better" while sitting comfortably.
