Im new to turkey hunting. i hunt in florida and are fall turkey season is coming up and i would like to know different methods of finding the turkeys in the fall
Look and listen for them before they go to roost. Primary feeding areas should be a good bet for the fall. Learn to Kee Kee Run and Assembly Yelp. It is easier to call a fall bird after the flock has been busted up. Coarse yelps and clucks are good to call a lone gobbler in. Best of luck.
thanks alot
Good to see you posting Chris! Ron is right if you can put them to bed it is much easier calling one in in the morning when they are finding each other to flock up. Let us know how it goes!
ok i will
ARE THERE ANY GOOD INSTRUCTINAL TAPES TO LEARN TO USE A TURKEY CALL
What do you have for calls Chris?
I don't know about FL but in MO any turkey is legal. This makes it much easier. Find where they are feeding or roosting like others suggested, but the big thing is even if you find the out walking around just run at them screaming and bust up the flock. The just move the direction most of them went, pop up the blind and start calling. They will come running. Fall Turkeys are a blast.
i dont have any calls right now but i am fixin to order a mouth call and a friction.also do locators work in the fall.and in florida were only allowed bearded and toms
I would wait on the mouth(I don't think you have enough time to learn to use one) and get yourself a good box call instead. They are easy to use and are good for getting them into you in the morning. I would try to find some areas they are feeding in if you are allowed Toms only and set up an ambush. Locators may work for you down there but I don't have as much response with them in the fall as I do the spring.
ok i will try that thanks alot
I was out this morning without a turkey license when I saw these guys.... (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v47/ceastes/P1000324.jpg)

Gobblers are tough to kill in the fall but it can be done. These are some things that have worked for me in the fall. I hunt them in the north east so methods may differ. When i look for gobblers in the fall i look for scratching were they are feeding, gobblers like to scratch close to the base of trees. this is the first sign that you are on the right track, of coarse you can shoot jakes also so they will travel with the main flock but sometimes they will form a group of there own. If you are lucky enough to find a flock of adult gobblers try to break the flock up, i have found they like to reassemble on higher ground, if they get back together at all. You will need patience as they are in no hurry to get together. I would wait at least an hour before i make my first call to adult gobblers twenty minuets will do if they are young birds . Call real sparingly using just a couple deep clucks and three slow coarse yelps use your hand to scratch in the leaves or what ever dead vegetation you have there. If the birds are young ones you can use the kee kee call with your mouth call jakes seem to prefer coarse calls over high pitched call because i think they like to get together with other jakes, i have also had good luck calling in jakes in the fall with a combo of kee kee and cutting on a box call. If you break up a flock just try what ever seems to be working at that moment, old birds call sparingly and young ones you can call a lot if they answer me i keep calling to keep there attention, i don't feel you can over call to young birds unless they have been under a lot of hunting pressure. Good luck. you will learn as you go sometimes that is the best way to learn. If you do kill one just stay in the area and have some fun with the others the more you call in the more you will learn about them.
i found some old mouth calls of my dads.but there howleer mouth calls for preditors.does that make a difference in the sound are would i be able to make the calls for turkeys with them
They might work but you would be better off with some turkey calls.
ok do calls work in the fall i have been told they dont usally work
They can work. I had the old Toms gobbling and chasing hens this fall. The hens wanted nothing to do with them but it didn't stop the boys from putting on a show.
Chris,
Let me look around, I seem to think I might have a couple of instructional tapes or cd's around, if I can dig them up I'll send them to you.
David
ya i would appreciate that very much
TTT for Chris.
I'm not much of a Turkey hunter but I'd like to wish you all the best in your endeavor. :wavey:
wut does ttt mean
To The Top
Christopher,
Go to the climate controlled shed and look in the same box you got the chopper and mallet out of. There is a rubbermade box with a red lid in there. Should be an owl hoot, wing bone and box call in there. Also check the big rubbermaid boxes if you already haven't there may be some in there. Can not remember what I brought down so dig through them and see what you can find.
Seen turkey's on old number 7 and old 10 while I was home. Forgot to tell you about them.
String for the bow should be there any day, and some bow hush and hush puppies are on the way.
Dad
On opening day for deer season, I had to goblets and a hen, and seven chicks filed pass my double bull within 5 yd.
In Minnesota if it doesn't have a beard it's not legal.
I've never hunted Turkey, but I think I will put in for one 2008 (Spring)
Carl
ok papa said u did he didnt know were u seen them.and the string already came.
