Title: ARROW SPINE
Post by: Bob B. on December 03, 2007, 05:06:00 PM
I have a Dwyer Dauntless long bow.  It is 64 inches long, uses a fast flight string and is not quiet center shot.  The bow is 54 pounds @ 28 inches.  I draw 29 1/2 inches.  With a wood arrow, would I shoot a 55/60 spined shaft, or something else? Any opinions out there?

Bob.

Your going to be around 58# to 59# at your draw and have a 30" to 31" arrow. You will more than likley be around 65/70 to 70/75. IMO, you should get so more posts with more experance behind them good luck.

Maybe this will help.
For me, the spines run pretty true if I am shooting a 28" arrow, (that is 28" from nock to back of point, (bop)) with a 125 grain feild point. That meens that I can make a arrow spined 55-60 pounds fly well out of bow with a draw weight of between 55 and 60 pounds.
If I add lenth to the arrow or a heavier fieldtip I will have to increase the spine to make them fly well. I would probably increase the spine by 5# or so for each inch I add and that much if I go to a little heavier field tip. If I do both I would have to increase the spine even more and if I go to a significantly heavier field tip or breadhead, I'd probably bump it up a bit more.
Right now I'm shooting a bow that is about 55# at my 27 1/2 inch draw length my arrows are 20" from nock to bop and I am using 160 grain grizzlys.  My arrows are spined at 70-75 pounds.  65-70 would probably work ok for me too.

The point is that you not only have to look at bow weight, you have to look at arrow length and field tip weight also.

Hope that helps.

The spine charts show you should start around 65-70 using a 125 grain point.

As was said, everything has an affect on it.  Bow weight, draw length, how close or not to center cut the bow, shaft length, point weight.

I would say 65-70 should about get it done :0)

Bob:
The only thing you need to add spine for if the added arrow length, bow weight will be about 57/58#. so 60/64 cut to 29 1/2" should be fine, but you are right on the line and 65/69 should work also. You stated the shelf was cut "not quite to center" I'm assuming 1/8" less/than.
