If you remember this one, you're showing your age. :saywhat: "The Shaft Spider" tracking device. I believe this was introduced around 1965/1966. I just found two of them in my old archery box. They were inserted into a fiberglass or aluminum arrow just behind the hunting tip. A small hold was drilled near the nock end and the fine web like string was fed out thru the hole and attached to the bow string. As the add reads: "The trail starts at your finger tips". They were the talk of the town back in the day, but like alot of archery gadgets they didn't blossom. My wife actually shot a deer with one of these spider shaft arrows back in the late 1960's. Unfortunately, she hit it square in the shoulder knuckle and never recovered the deer, but was able to follow the spider line and retrieve her arrow. Just some old archery history I thought you might enjoy.....Mike

Sadly I remember them but never used one.
-
I don't remember when they first showed up but they were around in the seventies- maybe even into the early eighties. Somewhere I have an old aluminum arrow or two with tge hole up around the nock. Hadn't thought of those in a while.
-
I've got several new in the case! They were just a bit before my time, though. CKruse

I think the Spider Shaft was the best tracking device. There were no string hang-ups to deflect arrow flight. It held 1800 ft of thread. They did not have to be tied from arrow to bow, just put the arrow on the rest and shoot. The velcro on the arrow and the bow would grab and you had a trail. We used them in the 80s for bear hunting and they worked perfectly. I also used it on a whitetail hunt in 1995. Didn't need it as my buck dropped in sight, but again it worked very well.
-
Ron is right on i used one in '74 to kill a bear and it worked very good.
The good part was if the string broke it would be picked up on grass or twigs and keep paying out.
still have two in the package
-
Remember them. Never used one, but seemed like a good idea at the time.

Here's another really cool item I got in a trade about 15 years ago. This was later produced by a broadhead arrow company and sold. The old hallow arrow trick to let the blood leak out.bowdoc (http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/ii175/bowdocsarchery/bowdocs/ma2001.jpg)
-
and you thought it was just another MA-2 huh ? check this out.bd (http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/ii175/bowdocsarchery/bowdocs/ma2002.jpg)
-
The noc end had to have a hole also to break the suction.Check the small hole in the noc.the arrow is hallow aluminum shaft.bowdoc (http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/ii175/bowdocsarchery/bowdocs/ma3001.jpg)
-
Thats history right there...Cool!
-
Yes it allowed the blood to leak out.I can't think of the name of the company that picked it up later. They later drilled holes into the shaft to allow it to break off inside the critter and keep leaking.gadgets and gizmo's from the past.I like this thread.bowdoc

Here's the Shear Advantage arrow syatem, which was developed here in Colorado in the 1980s.The shaft is open from the center of the broadhead, and there are holes at the rear of the shaft by the nock. In the photo with the name you can see grooves cut into the shaft every inch. This was designed so the arrow would shear off at a groove. By counting the inch marks you would know how much shaft was in the animal. The hollow shaft was to promote bleeding outside of the animal and to aid in collapsing the lungs. They were available in three sizes: 20xx,21xx,22xx.

Here's a "Nelson Arrow Holder" on a 59 Kodiak and the holder add from the Bear Archery 1959 Catalog. I actually played around with this in the back yard and it worked quite well. I wouldnt have drilled the bow to install it but it was there when I got the bow. Pretty Cool

Here's a head that I found several years ago in a box of fishing tackle at a flea market. Great Rabbit head but I don't know anything about it. Manufacturer? age?

Then of course, another favorite of mine

Those stinken nelly's screwed up lots of bows huh ? I bet I've fixed around 50-100 bows with holes from that type arrow holder.Hey don't be shooting those tips at no rabbits until we do a little research. Some field tips are collectable and worth a few bucks......bowdoc
-
Very cool stuff there Daryl. I like that fieid tip...Thanks ....Mike
-
Doc, are those white full length bear feathers hanging on your wall? I also have a couple of those smokers clips.
-
LOL Doc, I bet I've killed 20 or more rabbits with that head through the years. It's my favorite and my "go to" rabbit head. It rolls em like a 50 caliber. I've lost it in the snow more than once and marked the spot and went back after the snow melted and found it. I refuse to shoot it at squirrels for fear of sticking it in a tree and not being able to get it back. I have it mounted on a semi flu flu to make it easier to recover now.
the inside of the ferrule is not tapered. If that helps identify it.

The cone shaped small game head was made by Herters.
I think there might have been two sizes. Long ago i several of them and carried them for practice shots while elk hunting. They really worked well as they would not stick in anything, but wouldn't deform on a rock hit.
-
Oh yes Jon there are about 6 packs or so of the full length feathers. Most of them do have a little moth damage, but I still love to look at the packages. The smoke clips are great.Thank you Ron I just knew you would bail us out on that tip.I always like the copper head shocker too.Trap those were parallel ferrules before the trapper tool was invented !!!!!!!!!!!!!! bowdoc
-
Doc, send me your address again.

Here's the Frydenlund Timer.
This worked dual duty as an arrow holder and draw check.
This one is a RH.

TRAP
The head you pictured was made by Herters. I had a few of them.
I put one on a bolt tht I had for a really chep 75# Crossbow. I shot it at a Saunders straw target next to my dad's shed. It went through the target, through both sides of the shed, and stuck in the block of my neighbor's lawnmower while he was cutting the yard.
Raghorn...I disagree with you...they stick quite good in a Briggs & Stratton.
I cought hell for that one. I waas 15 at the time.
-
Wow thank you Jon you da man this week, those are great and will look real good hanging next to thier white brothrs..Thanks again bowdoc
-
Can't remember where I got them but they were sitting in a box collecting dust. Didn't think of using them with the history behind them so I thought they would look good next to your white feathers. Little color to your feather wall. Your welcome. Seems I remember you sending me a quiver screw for my bear quiver once.

Ahhh Cool a RH white porceline model with sculpted lid. Very rare. Great find

Yeah, I always did prefer the two-piece models. These one piece modern styles don't do it for me at all. The pull chain is really nice on that one is really nice. Is that the original handle or a reproduction?
-
Is it a left hand swirl or the rarer right hand swirl model?
-
Does anyone have the Bear bow holder you stick in the ground to hold your recurve bow in the upright position.
-
I may have one of the type that screwd into a tree and your bottom limb wedged in holding the bow straight up ? no sure on the ground model..bowdoc
-
I've got one. It's new in the box with the instructions, but the little plastic wheels on it have deteriorated and crumbled from age. I think it was only in the catalog in 1968. CKruse
-
Did you get the Howatt adds yet. Just wondering as the USPS sometimes goofs up.
-
It's been a while since we visited this thread, so I thought I'd bring it up with a neat little gadget I found that's "new to me"
It's the Wilson-Allen Brush Knock
Not sure if they are any better or worse than the more popular "brush button" but they are effective at keeping brush out of your string limb contact point.
They were sold 2 per pack.
