Title: Red Wing Hunter

This is a Red Wing Hunter that I recently aquired. It has some of the nicest wood that I've seen in a RWH, but I'm not sure what it is. Seems to have too much grain for either Rosewood or Shedua, but I may be wrong. Anybody venture a guess on the wood and on the year of the bow? Also looking for a source for reproduction strike plates if they are available.

I had a rosewood RWH that I got new in '63.  The wood was a lot darker than that.  Mine had small tips, but not built up as nicely as Chucks as I remember.

It does not look like Brazillin, East Indian, or African rosewood to me, but then I am no wood expert.

Personally, I don't care if it is walnut, or some other hardwood...that is one B-U-T-Ful bow.

Hey CHUCK...

If ya wanna drill two holes in the back of the bow...I got a Wing quiver ya could mount on it.

Thanks guys. I used to collect Wings, but due to finances I sold most of them off several years ago. Now I'm starting to slowly build another collection. I think that I'm going to limit my collecting to the originals with stickers (pre silk screen)? This is the nicest RWH I've had to date. I did get a couple of really nice Gulls last week though. Both original Wings. One has green stickers with gold letters and the other has the gold stickers with green letters. One is 60#; the heaviest Gull that I've found to date.

Thanks Jack, I think I'll pass on drilling the holes, but I've got a T-Bird just waiting for a Wing Quiver. All I gotta do is remove the fill plugs.
How many Wing arrows ya got to go in that quiver? Seems like I remember seeing some in your archery cave.

NO wing arrows in my collection.  Pretty much all my arrows are custom made by "ME".

Chuck -

Bob Gosdeck once told me that Wing made some of those Red Wing Hunters out of shedua, but Al Harford told me that he did not think that was correct (at least he was unaware that they did).

I agree with you that the graining does not look like that in any shedua that I have yet seen. The grain looks like rosewood, but the color does not. The rosewood RW Hunters that I have seen were all darker and redder than this your bow.

I do not know if Bob Lee ever used any bacote, but that is what your riser looks like to me (color & grain).

That bow is definitely a beauty - a real keeper! Congratulations!

I'am gonna go with Brazilian or Honduren rosewood ie by the serial number and looks.Rosewood was all Bob used until they switched to shedua about 1965-66.I'am gonna say that yours is Honduren rosewood built around 1961-1963 very nice looking bow.bowdoc
