Title: If you could only have one...
Post by: Blackhawk on August 06, 2008, 11:10:00 AM
After Bowdoc's post on best shooting Bear bows, I have to admit I am fresh out of Super Kodiaks.    I recently sold a beautiful 67 1/2 that Don had refinished, but its 58# was too much. I've been wanting one for a while, but...

For you fellows with experience (and opinions), which Super Kodiak would you get if you could only have one.    :help:

Remember, looks and performance go together, right?   ;)

I traded a 68 Super K for a 57 and 58 Kodiak.  It was an incredible bow and I echo everything Doc said about them.  Kinda slow but forgiving, stable, solid and an absolutely gorgeous.

I'd get that 68 back if I could only have one.

Crap Lon you can't answer with a question ??? Now you almost stumped me on that one...But low and behold.I seem to have some hand writen record of speed testing the Super K's...several times...well several hundred times actually....I will say this, the fastest one of them all with no doubt when I say this is the ragging beauty herself the all black girl...1967 1/2 Super K....but the best shooter.....ya guy's know I'am gonna come with the curve here...any year in 64" is my fav of the supers for a shooter...the 64" also the slowest of the supers and may quilify for the speed of a selfbow. But man does that mother shoot..........bowdoc

...so far, it looks like a 64" SK from 1968 is in the lead.  :saywhat:

I have the 1976 Blue Stripe that Drop speaks of. It is the only Super K I own so I am in no position to give an opinion on this one. I do love mine however. I have heard from a few people "in the hobby" that the blue stripers tend to be better shooters than the red stripers. I said stripers guys, not strippers.

I only have a '68 SK.  Got it from Papa Bear himself while on my honeymoon in Aug '68.

If I could only have one SK, I would choose the "Black Beauty" 1967-1/2.  I have shot one and feel that it was smoother than my '68, plus I think it looks better.  Reminds me of  "Paladin". (if some of you young'uns even know who that is).

There's no doubt the 67 was stunning...as is that 69.     :clapper:

...and Jack, I loved Paladin.

"Have Gun Will Travel reads the card of a man.
A knight without armor in a savage land.

His fast gun for hire head's the calling wind.
A soldier of fotune is the man called Paladin.

Paladin, Paladin
Where do you roam?
Paladin, Paladin,
Far, far from home".

Doc, 'that darn 70' is my favorite Super K.  I've owned enough over the years to know there is always a little variance in handles.  Of course you've been known to perform some magical 'massaging' of the wood to make them fit like a glove.  The Super K profile is my favorite type of recurve; takedowns, Bighorns and Predators.....................Shick

Hey Denny I will post a couple pics of two supers with custom grips asap,a 1969 and a 1970.They are more along the pattern of a 1R mag handle grip....but the 1970 SK is one sweet bow.Actually all supers from 1970 on to the blue stripers shoot great I think.....low and slow, but will drive the point home...bowdoc

I have also fallen in love with the super K's. I have a '69 in 55 lbs and a '68 in 45 lbs that somehow got out of the factory with no overlays on the back, there was also no writing on the bow. Most likely a "lunch box bow" built by an employee for himself. They both shoot sweet, but the one with no overlays seems to "feel" better in the grip. Probably because it is thinner.
