Title: K-Mag help...
Post by: BowHuntingFool on July 11, 2008, 05:11:00 PM
Hey folks I just picked up a Kodiak Magnum for my 12 year old and was wanting some info on it! The serial number is 5M3657 and has the brown wood grain riser and brown stripe thru it! Any info would be very helpful! Thanks! I'll post pics if this would help!

It is a 1965 model. the woods are Brazilian Rosewood (dark) and Bubinga. Argueably one of the very best looking K-Mags. What poundage is it? CKruse

Here you go, the catalog page. The 64 and 65 were identical for both years. Yours is a 65 because of the 5M number. From 65-69 Bear used the last digit of the year to begin the serial number. CKruse

I kinda took a chance on the purchase but the seller said he would take it back if I didn't like it! He says no cracks, no holes or blemishes on it, says its perfect. It is marked at 43#. This should be perfect for my boys 22" DL! What do you this the DW would be at 22"?

It should be about 25# give or take a couple. I would think an average size 12 year old would be ok with it. Looks really nice in the picture. Good luck and let us know how it works out for him. CKruse

Thanks CK for your help, what spine of carbon arrows do you recommend for it, I really have no idea on this one?

It's going to take something really light at that poundage and draw weight. I've had good luck picking through the lightweight cedar kids arrows, cutting the swaged metal tip off of them, putting a taper on them, and gluing a 100 grain field point on them. They "stick" lots better this way.  Black Widow Custom Bows in Nixa, MO. does a good job fixing up cedar kid arrows. You could call Vernon or Roger or John and they could fix some up just like I described. I'd start with about a half dozen. Keep 3 back and work with 3 under close supervision and scrutiny. Learning the proper, safe way to pull arrows from a bale or target butt is as important as the shooting part. Mosty, just have a good time.

Way to Go Dad (BHF)

Your sons going to love it.  The 64 and 65 KMags are awesome looking bows.

Its a shame Bear Archery didnt make a 60" Kodiak to match them.

Good Luck and Keep us posted. Trap

"Its a shame Bear Archery didnt make a 60" Kodiak to match them".

That was part of the design plan of the '67-1/2 Kodiak Hunter.  To be a longer version of the K-mag.

Bowhunting fool

You got a nice one.  You son is very luckry.  He is starting out at 12 yrs old with a real collectors item.  You are comdeming him to a future of being a recurve collector.

GOOD FOR YOU!!

There is a slight difference in the 1964 and 1965 mags, the glass color. Both beautiful bows.

Thanks guys! What type of string do you all recommend for this bow? It comes with the original so I'm sure it will need a new one!

Contact Raineman.

He'll hook you up with a string that will accent your son's bow beautifully.

Get a 12 strand B-50 flemish. 48-48 1/2" Brace height should end up around 8 1/4-8 3/4" from deepest part of grip. Make sure it's a B-50 string.

Bow arrived just now and......Oh my goodness..... did we get a good bow! This Kodiak Mag has got to be in MINT condition with one tiny scratch on the side of the limb and it took me a while to find that!!! I am in shock by the beauty of this bow, all original!!!!! Original rest, strike plate and string with some crazy silencers and finger rollers! I'm a bit worried about shooting the bow with the original string so we have to wait a day or two for the string that raineman is making for Dominic! I must say that Jim is a top notch guy, more on that later! I will post some pics up soon of her beauty! Man, what a work of Art, I want one........!   :help:
