Title: Calfskin Sideplates
Post by: Horney Toad on March 31, 2008, 11:30:00 PM
I like to use calfskin sideplates when setting up a bow. Does anyone have a source of buying some bulk material with thin leather?

Are you talking about hair-on or tooling leather?
I get a discount from Tandy... not a big one, but it helps.  I also have a side of thin goat skin in the shop right now.  A bit more of an open grain than calfskin, but tougher.

I got some that looks like calf hide...but it's zebra hide. The hide it not as flat as one would like for strike plates. As it's skinned out zebra legs..Kinda hard to work with, but about 10 fold tougher then any hide I ever saw.I do have a source for unborn B&W calf hides. But you gotta buy the whole hide once there tanned. You will only get a certin amount of black and white...once you've cut all the black and white. Then you should have enough to cut about the same in just black or white.I would be happy to send a little zebra hide your way if you like..Keep me posted bowdoc
