Title: 57 Kodiak wanted
Post by: bentstick_55 on February 22, 2008, 10:56:00 PM
Want to buy a 1957 Kodiak RH hunting weight. Want a shooter, not a wallhanger. Any help would be appreciated.

White glass or brown glass '57 ??  Either way they are an awesome shooting bow...  I see the one up for auction right now is a little light for you. Good luck in your search.

Yes, that is my 48# 60 incher.... (the 1957 kodiaks were built in 3 different lengths).. I have a white glass 52# 60 incher that really smokes a forgewood shaft.. limb twist is a common issue with these.

I have two 57 Kodiaks, both 51# 60 inchers and Alaskabowhunter is right,  they smoke an arrow.  Good luck with your search.  When you finally get one you won't be sorry.

They can occasionally be found in the Classifieds here on TG and also on the big auction site.

TC, Daryl

I believe the white glass ones were 1958.

there are Kodiaks with white glass built on the 1957  frames, then the 1958 Kodiaks also with white glass came out built on different frames, these are also called "sowbellys" because of the convex shape of the riser on the belly side, compared to the concave shape of the '57 frame. Some collectores also distinguish between the rounded corner of the site window and the scalloped corner of the site window. My photograph here shows the difference between the white glass 1957 and the 1958 Kodiaks. I will also add a brown glass 1957 in the pic as well. The 1958 sowbelly is on the left, the white glass '57 K is in the center, the brown glass 57 K is the bow on the right.

WHat do you think of the 56 or the 58????? Are they about the same??

personally, I would be looking for a 1960 Kodiak for a vintage shooter, my second choice would be a '59 with the limb tip overlays replaced. The '56 is a double shelf bow and the '58's are going to be a white glass bow which is now big deal. However one note on the '58 Kodiak, they started cutting the string groves deep through the belly glass and into the maple limb laminations. These bows, like the early '59 Kodiaks are prone to delamination. Ask bowdoc how many 1958 and early 1959 Kodiaks he has seen with broken limbs. good luck in your search.

Is there anyone who makes a good reproduction of the '57 Kodiak?
