Title: My shortest hunt ever
Post by: GingivitisKahn on December 01, 2007, 11:17:00 AM
Today is the tail end of gun season in Ohio (ends tomorrow) but I decided to head out for a bit of still hunting / scouting.  My thought was, I don't feel like competing for my good stand sites w/ the gun gang and it'll just depress me to see those dudes tromping through my areas, so lets have a look at somewhere else.

Anyway I intentionally started late this morning. Got to an interesting area and within 10 seconds heard a cottontail getting owned by a hawk or coyote or something.  Ten minutes up the deer trail, I spotted a promising rub on a small pine and a cool little falcon.  This might just be a really nice day I thought.

Fifteen minutes up the trail, my pager goes off.  Did I mention I'm on call this week (was supposed to be on call a few weeks ago but traded so I could go to the Ohio Trad camp - good trade)?  I try to call the customer to see what the problem is - no answer.  I leave a message and head for my car.

Twenty-five minutes later, I'm back in my basement logging on to see what the matter is and the customer finally manages to call back.  Turns out, I am able to resolve her problem over the phone (could have done it in the field) without ever having to lift a finger.

Sigh.  I guess I'm watching Vs. today since, in all probability, the pager will ring again.  Oh well - it was a very nice fifteen minute hunt.

It may have all gone wrong, but at least you got to go out.  I'm still recup'ing from surgery.  Porbably a good thing though, 'cause with this Oxycodon I wouldn't be able to figure out which one of the eight deer to shoot at!  Mark

Lol - just shoot the one in the middle.   Hope you recuperate completely and quickly!

Hearing the rabbit get bit was something 99% of the population never gets to hear.
I made summer sausage to day and some burnt up jerky.  Oh, yea, scrapped somemore sinew.  It's been a good Saturday.

Sorry your hunt was so short!  I went out with my bow to "help out" the shotgunners today.  They sent 3 does right to me, but at a dead run.  Could't get a clean shot...

Flatlander-  I hope you recover.  I have had 5 surgeries in the last 2 years.  And I know how you are feeling.  Just be careful on the Oxycoden.  Up here in Nova Scotia, Canada there are alot of people, especially in the Cape Breton area that are becoming VERY dependent on this drug.  Just be VERY careful on it. People are paying up to $10 plus dollars a pill for the high that it can give.  Very bad.

Lol - I got called again later in the day.  Now bear in mind, my team supports something like 100 databases.  The ticket says 'do blah' to the database.   Um.   Mind telling me what database?  What are ya gonna do.

The morning was really cool and I got to spend some time out in the yard working on my shooting and so forth.  So the day wasn't a complete loss by any means.  :-)

We can't hunt during shotgun season in Iowa, so I  have to wait until after Dec. 17 to get back at it. This has been a very frustrating season. Warm weather early kept the deer in the open sections. We haven't been able to pattern them this year. All I've had close enough to shoot have been yearling bucks and fawns, so no meat yet.  :(

It's gonna be a cold time in the timber when I can get back.

Oh and to sweeten the pot a bit... I'm not a big bird ID guy, but this morning I decided to check to see what sort of falcon I saw yesterday.

Given the pictures I've seen so far and the dimensions and so forth, I'm 99% sure it was a Peregrine Falcon, which is (I think) still on the endangered list here in Ohio.  He flew from a tree on my left and passed about 5 feet from my head.

So while that hunt was short, it was chock full of quality.  :-D

Quality is what it's all about, the experiences had while afield.  Mark
