Title: What Grizzly Bear outfitter/guide?
Post by: MountainTool21 on May 03, 2012, 06:47:00 PM
Gang
Im starting to put the wheels on a grizzly bear hunt. I was just curious as to which guide/outfitter and location you would recommend? I hunted Alaska last fall and loved it. I was wondering about BC and or the yukon, as well as Alaska. Thank you again
Andrew

I would give these guys a call...  http://www.alaskatrophyoutfitters.co

I think Yote Robertson (Dicks son) guides for them and has for couple years now.  You know he can do it for a stickbow shooter given how he was raised....

TTT.

I've been checking into outfitters for Griz also. I turn 50 in 2 years and would like to line up a spring 2016 birthday present Griz hunt to myself.  Looked at BSC's website but the rest I've looked at.......Well just didn't fit me is the best way to put it. Anyone else have a good word to say about an outfitter?

I know the owner/head guide for Alaska Trophy Outfitters a bit and he is a heck of a bow hunter, I would try them.

Also, Brad Adams is still around and guiding, he was part of the Schaefer/Schleyer Kodiak brown bear hunt and in the famous pic.  Can find him here
http://www.aerolaskaoutfitters.com/HuntingAlaska.htm.    Last time I ran into him he said he mostly flew and didn't guide as much anymore.

If you're not locked in on just Grizzlies, but open to brown bear, I'm good friends with the guys at Afognak Wilderness Lodge  www.huntafognak.com, (http://www.huntafognak.com,)  and they are top notch. They have helped trad guys take some enormous bears, and have a great success rate!

I am quite sure the money is being well spent but I hear of guys who are successful time and again who spend roughly half of what some of these places charge. I am not a cheap skate and i know for many this is the hunt of a lifetime but how can it be that average Joe's making 60k a year are able to hunt grizz many times in their life all the while not allowing their family's to suffer financially? LOL....am I missing something? I need to start pestering them for information.

Everyone has their own story and some can find better deals than others. I wouldn't put it above some people to down play or fib a little about money also.    ;)

I won't claim to be an expert as I don't know most of the guides in the state, but any Griz / Brown Bear hunt ( guided by a reputable guide) will cost plenty. A relative that can take you is an option. Also check with Cabelas, ( or ask the guide(s) themselves)  they have cancelations that can be picked up at a discount some times because the deposit has been paid and the client backed out for some reason.

Just my $.02 , hope it helps

yes, that helped a great deal. thanks. i was just reading about how people pick up hunts that were cancellations for like 7-8 grand.

You might also want to contact Bowhunting Safari Consultants.  I believe they also offer cancelation hunts at times.

I have used BSC several times with good results, they have many long standing relationships with good outfitters. I have never hunted Grizzly bears though ....

this may sound crazy, but seeing how I'll never be able  to afford a guide, my grizzly hunting will most likely be done with a more than competent marksman, or solo (really don't want to go it solo, but part of  becoming the strongest version of myself involves going through a "rite of passage" , ie something dangerous) if there are any other crazy, warrior mindset Hunters out there who will still be hunting in 5-10 years, I'd love some company   :)

After seeing the vid of Sam Fejes calling a 10' brownie to 12 yds for a guy with a fawn distress call, he has to be top o the list- on YouTube hunters name was Juan and has a tv show.

as i understand it, in Alaska you have to use a guide or have family to hunt bears. i may not be 100% correct though.

You may want to contact Scott at Bow and Arrow Adventures. They seem to cater to the traditional archer and are taking some big browns in Alaska.
