Post by: **DONOTDELETE** on March 05, 2008, 10:27:00 PM
I'm starting to get some info on bear hunting in NY. I want to take a bear with my Shrew 54" 52#@26" 630-650 grn arrows w/160 Snuffers. I'm looking in to the Catskills area. Any & All Help welcomed.

What do you need to know? Greene county has had more record bears than any other county, according to a recent NY game and fish magazine.
I know the population around me has literally exploded. No bears ten years ago, now everyone sees them. I had a sow and three cuns on my deck three times last year. I also had a big boar attacking my apple trees....his weight snapped a main branch about four inches in diameter.
I would look at the state land in the Windham area. NYSDEC website has a map finder, and you can get topo, trail, access info there.
There are also a lot of bears South of here. I believe Sullivan and dutchess counties do alright too.
Baiting is illegal, as are hounds. Fall only season. Anything else I can do for you, let me know. Good luck.

PA has an archery only bear season now and I think it is concurrent with deer season but it is only like a two or three day season.  I do the rifle bear every  year but never find any .

+ the biggest bears in the USA   ;)

Sal,
the few guys I spoke with who killed bears in the Catskills have done so by luck while deer hunting.
Go for it

Don't tell him, show him. That is good land to call in bears. Believe me!

Hi Sal...the best spots I know of (where we hunt...although we haven't gotten any in several years are as follows:)

Pike and Monroe Counties
Game Lands 180 (below is a link to a map of the game lands):

We do the rifle hunt so if you want to join us send me an email in October to remind me and I'll get you the details.  I would do the archery hunt but I can't get off from work.  I'm not much of a bear hunter...I just go to keep my eye on my pop and make sure he is alright.

This area boarders NJ and we find it best to focus in on the thick swamps.

Good luck! Keep me posted.
Check out the latest DEC report:
 Outdoor News NY (http://www.nyoutdoornews.com/articles/2008/03/06/top_news/news02.txt)
I don't know the Adirondacks at all but it sounds like they are loaded. Their season opens in September which might have something to do with so many bear taken.
I'll be doing at least a short weekend hunt just for bear as soon as the season opens in the Catskills. Would love to share camp.
It probably differs from one year to the next but this spot there was LOTS of sign in June/ July but nothing in Oct.  :(
Beautiful spot nonetheless.

I do the Adirondacks every year.Lots of bear when the beech trees are good but the cherries are all done before the season opens. If you could hunt them when the cherries were still on the trees theyd be easy pickins.I got one up there in 01 and havent seen one since.Sure is nice country though to be looking for them in.Grouse open bout a week later and they acn keep you busy while your bear searching.Id love to do a campout this fall in the Dacks with a bunch of TGers in the Moose River area.Moose river wilderness is a good bet.Theyre not easy but you got a better chance here than most places in NY.Holler at me this September and Id be glad to show you some land up there.
