Starting to plan my second major hunting trip and have decided to go after Buffalo. I have several Buffalo here in CO or WY where I can hunt them but prefer the Cape or Asiatic. I would like to hear from the family any and all suggestions, good and bad as to where would be the most exciting spot to pick. I have contacted Andrew and Michael from Australia and they both have been more than helpful describing their hunting camps. What is bigger and meaner the buffalo in Africa, Australia, or South America?

It is my understanding that the buffalo in Australia are the biggest body wise. As far as mean I don't know if there is to much difference between them, I think that the Cape Buffalo in Africa are probably hunted more and quicker to become aggressive due to the large predators there besides people but Bill Baker had some interesting stories about the buffalo in Australia also. I don't really know to much about the buffalo in South America. Joseph

I have been told that the south American buff have the biggest bodies, but the smallest horns, I suspect all the true buffalo(not bison) have about the same temperement. It just depends on how much they get harassed for their attitude at the moment. The cape buff bulls average about 1800#'s but that can vary on area there are smaller varieties in some places. Most of the cape buff are not aggressive at all, but if they are in an area where they are being harassed a lot by poachers, lions etc. they can very short tempered. The Aussie waterbuff bulls average 2200#'s and grow the biggest horns of any horned animal. I have seen several that were more than six feet tip to tip. They also can vary quite a bit in body and horn size, they were imported from several different countries and of course the areas they are in vary also. Most of the time they are not aggressive, like cape buff, but you can never trust them, bulls or cows, we have had quite a few at this point, make flat out charges and some of them were totally unprovoked. A guy was killed by a buff while checking his well near Gove not long ago.

Andrew, if you are a PBS member and plan on attending the banquet in Pitts. Monty Browning and I will be talking about Aussie buff in a seminar and Monty has also taken cape buff, along with the #1 archery waterbuff. Cory Mattson whos photo is at the top of this page will probably be there also.

About how much does one of the buff hunts in Australia cost once everything is said and done?

Last time I researched it your looking at around $10,000.00 airfare and all expenses incl. Hunts running $5000.00 to $6000.00 of total.

Yes it will be around that now, but the hunt is actually a bit more. High fuel cost and the weak US dollar are pushing prices up a bit. Watch the overall price, I have seen some outfitters advertising cheaper prices, but then add on a bunch of extra charges.

Tyler included in the hunt price is 1 buffalo, 1 scrub bull, which is known to be meaner at times than the bigger buffalo, and any hogs seen. I am going to book. You interested in going? Andrew
