Well new attendees and veterans from last year; the date has been set. I will be hosting the 2nd annual EOBH( Eastern Ontario Bunny Hunt), on the weekend of Feb 24th and 25th. This date is over a month later than last years hunt.
I think late Feb is a better time, more sunny days and more rabbits out sunning themselves.
I have a new area this year, more brair thickets and some real nice, brush filled, thorn filled tangled hegderows that border a cornfield; the bunny tracks are crazy thick in there.
My beagle is a year older and wiser, I took her out the other morning but it was too cold for man or beast, -28 with the windchill. Her feet froze-up and we went home before she had trouble.
Not many fresh tracks in that weather though. :smileystooges:
While deerhunting the same area, I would routinely see bunnies on the move in the am and before dark.
Some cottontails and some big snowshoes too.
We will be based from a huge old farmhouse that sits on 3-4 acres and has a ton of room; it is surrounded by hundreds of acres of prime bunny haunts. The farmhouse has 3 baths, 3 fireplaces and 3 storeys of space! There is also a large outdoor firepit, with lots of wood ready to gather around after the hunts. So far the confirmed are as follows: Me, Jake H, MessinwithSasquatch, Patience, Harl, Ontario Longbow, HunterJohn, Jim Godden of Mississippi Lake Longbow,Dan Banting and Luke Vandervennen.
We still have room for any Fellow Ontario TGers who want to join us for a weekend of great times.
We will hunt from morning till noon, come in for a big lunch, then either go back out for shooting games or more bunny chasin'!
We will be having the swinging bunny target again, some "various position ballon busting" Can you shoot lying on your back on a hay bale?? ;)
Some long distance pine-cone shooting, some clout shooting and some type of bionic bunny shoot( bring some junker arrows!)
There will be prizes and a trading blanket, along with a grand prize for the person showing the most carefree, wild attitude during the hunt.
A big dinner followed by some fireplace "chillaxing", and video watching of each days events.
This is bigger than last year, more people, more food, and even the elusive Tundra-bunnies that eluded us last year!
This is the official Start-up thread, so maybe we can keep it alive for awhile, I know there is the NY bunny hunt thread running too, but 50 guys??? WOW! I'd be surprised if 50 trad shooters were even in Eastern Ontario, LOL! and we are huge compared to NY state!! ( I wish Shawn and crew all the best!)
Ours is a week later this year so there will not be 2 result threads running at once.
Our meals are already in the planning stage, be ready to leave a few pounds heavier... :bigsmyl:
Everybody is encouraged to bring something to the trading blanket, one man's junk is another man's treasure!
Any early arrivers are welcome to show up on Friday, I will be on hand to greet them.
I look forward to seeing my friends again and meeting new friends.
CHEERS!
BD

I'm in a bit of a predicament right now. I have no arrows. . I'm trying out some new carbons, but the package with the inserts, points, and wraps is overdue  . Oh well, it'll all come out in the wash.
-
Luke, you have like 3 1/2 weeks man...I'm sure Tom could set you up too. He has lots of toys!
BD
-
yeah, I'm hoping they'll show up in the next few days
Tom could set up the army for archery
-
Come on now,I'm down to 5 or 8 doz.arrows.I do believe all my arrows would be over spined for you as well.I think the lightest spined I have are 70#.But let me know if they will help.
-
C'mon Tom, you mean you have that many in your backquiver... :archer: :goldtooth:
BD
-
ttt for the morning folks
-
Just checked the weather network long range forecast...getting milder( a bit), then lots more snow!!!
Looks like we will have a good foot plus by the time the hunt happens, might be a good idea to bring snowshoes if ya got 'em.
BD :)
-
AT my age (the way you fellas talk)I would not be able to carry more then 3 or 4 arrows at a time.I just would not be able to keep up. :( :biglaugh:
-
No, you don't shoot the heavy ash and birch like me and Jake, you still like them old cedars! LOL!
And at your AGE ;) :p ; you best not start carrying them in your cat VI...it might pull ya right down to your knees!
Hardwood arrows are for the 45 and UNDER crowd man, :help:
he he he....BD
-
I guess you have not put any of my arrows on a scale. My hunting arrows are generally in the neighborhood of 700 grains, some just under and some in the 750 range.I do have Douglas Fir,Hex Pines,Lam Birch but I still like the cedar though. :bigsmyl:
-
I cant wait to get out there and bag me some bunnys this season, hopefully the SoothSayer will make a kill. Ive been practicing hard, and I think I will be able to bag one. Anywase hope to see you guys out there this EOBH.
Cheers, "Messin"
-
Tom, That is only cause they are 38" long... ;) :bigsmyl:
Aim smal, miss small Jess.

Cary;
Thanks for the invite to the " Killer attack " Wabbit hunt! I may be able to make it this year. Although being retired , I have less time than ever before. Can't email at the moment ,but will contact you in a couple of days. Should have my new Apple Computer up and running by then! I'm going to be in Ottawa that weekend, because my wife and daughter are attending a Josh Groban concert.
-
Well Serg, I'm counting on you this time!!! You'll have a blast meeting and hunting with all the new guys you'll meet.
And you WILL go home heavier than when you got here, that IS a fact!
BD
-
I am looking forward to meeting everyone and doing some hunting, looks like I may be able to get away for the whole weekend :bigsmyl:I will know in a couple of days.
John
-
the WHOLE WEEKEND?????now ya see John, that's what I'm talkin' about!
What bow(s) are you bringing??
More snow tonite and tomorrow, more coming too. Snowshoe Weather!!!
Poor Daisy is on the mend, she was running bunnies the other day when it was real cold, her top layer of that tough skin on her hind footpads got froze up a bit, it is peeling off now.
Booties for the next 5 nites and bag balm!
Then some fleece boots to run the bunnies with, that's okay, we don't want the bunnies going too fast anyways... ;) :)
BD
-
I will be bringing my check mate hunter(only one I got)my back up is a Ithaca model 37 featherlight(it will stay home).Man I cant wait to meet Daisy cause I love beagles,we had one for 16 years.I will know by Friday about the WHOLE WEEKEND,when is the rest of the gang arriving?
John
-
Some on Friday the 23rd, most in the am of Sat. the 24th, some REAL early, eh Tom and Frank and Luke??? :archer:
A "one bow" man eh John???? You gotta be good then.
I "almost" jumped back to a 'curve with a H2 TD; I would like to shoot that baby, you left or right?

You keep working on the whole weekend thing! This is gonna be a hoot.
BD :)

John
-
Rightie eh??? works well for me! We'll be doing alot of shooting, bunnies, games, stumps etc...Just wait until you see Harl shoot( except the pine cones, he sucks at those.. ;) :p :bigsmyl: )...You are going to pick up alot of good tips, really there is not a bad shot in the bunch.

Good Morning Gentlemen,
I would appreciate knowing for sure who is arriving on Friday at the Manor and roughly what time so I can have some chow ready for who ever is a wee bit peckish!! I also need to know for sleeping arrangements, first come get the best picks! :saywhat: And yes Tom, there will be some Timmies!!! :bigsmyl: Anyways, please inform me of any food allergies and any dislikes of food. I like to be prepared so there are no complaints. Have a great time this weekend with all the fresh snow.
Kelly

The Forest Witch is cooking for everyone?!!? By any chance, is this a gingerbread house? You guys better leave a nice trail of something more permanent than breadcrumbs!!! :readit: :jumper:
-
Ms Forest Witch,
I plan on being there on the Friday evening. As far as I know there is no reason why I can't be there fairly early. Sounds like there is enough grub on hand that I don't need to make any requests. As for sleeping arrangements, I'll bring my army cot and bunk anywhere dry and more or less warm.
JIM
-
what Jim just said. I could work my schedule to be there Friday, lets say right around dinner;-). A dry place will be all I need. Thanks. Question for you; what do you need?
Luke, I have arrows for you, Ash or allum. & they might just fit your draw. I look forward to trying to hit those pine cones. Maybe if we find any the size of my truck, I'll hit a few.LOL.
-
I just heard from Frank( ontario longbow), he is for sure coming and bringing his buddy Theo( inventor of the Journeyman/elcipse broadhead), and another buddy, a new trad shooter, Phil.
Sounds good boys! :archer: :clapper:
-
I won't be able to get thee until the Sat.I will leave here as soon as I can to be there early Sat.morning.
-
So you leaving at 2 am Tom????? ;) :archer:
-
I was thinking between 3-4.I probably won't get home on the Fri.night until 11 or 12,so I had better sleep an hour or 2.
-
Tom is there room for another in your car? I'll ride in the trunk if need be :) I sent you a pm but wasnt sure if you got it.
-
We will figure out something Luke .
-
Luke,
Don't worry man, we will get you down here. Be it by car, truck or BROOM...we will get you here and home. LOL
:scared: ?? is are you gonna have arrows by then?? Snowing for the last 2 days, supposed to be some wicked squalls today now too...Snowshoes anybody?
BD
-
hmmm. The ride on the broom might be a little sketchy... Unless I get a jagged scar on my forehead
If no arrows, I can just as easily be the full time photographer. I'm a lot more accurate with my new camera anyway :D
-
Yeah man m sure you'll get some arrows in time, if not, there should be alot here. hahah more accurate with the camera haha I bet. Anywase it'll be good to chill again.
Peace, "Messin"
-
BD I wish this wasn't so far away or I'd try to make it up. Sounds like it's gonna be a blast!!
-
Don't count me out yet Luke.We are gonna get something worked out.
-
Hey Cary,, How are things? Really looking forward to the bunny hunt. Right now at 12:02 a.m. we are under at snow storm advisory here on Georgian Bay, we are getting a lot of high winds and a ton of snow. Harl, Mitch and myself shot this morning at Base Borden (indoors), we had a great time, Harl was shooting telephone poles out of his Morrison. They flew like lazor beams and really quieted down the bow. However after he saw me drilling broadheads into the target at twenty yards with my beautiful Widow he declared that the Widow was an unfair advantage to the bunnies and I could only bring the Hill to the shoot (the old Bastard!!). Looking forward to the get together and I will bring lots for the swap table (anyone got an old Black Widow knife?) ,, Talk to you soon,, Frank.
-
We had a pile of snow fall yesterday and high winds to boot.
Was a wild weather day here.
snow is getting knee deep and better in the bush now... :archer:
Tom? a Bastard??? only the master bastard himself is he! LOL :goldtooth:
You do need to being that Hill, I want to fling some heavy ash outta it, see what it thinks of them logs!
What is O.B.B. doing shooting that morrison??? He should be shooting all them new Hills he is acquiring...
we are hard at work getting ready for the hunt,
I just loaded the outdoor shed/lean-too with some dry wood for our bonfire, don't forget to bring a lawnchair for fireside sittin'.
Hopefully Jim will bring a couple of demo bows for Mississippi Lake Longbow for the fellas to try out.
See you soon,
BD
-
Hey Cary,, I am planning to bring the Hill, and your right she loves heavy arrows, I'm shooting 600g's out of it. Harl the O.M.B (Old Master Bastard), was shooting 780g's yesterday and when he hit the target (which wasn't that often, thats why he always carries a leatherman, the pliers come in handy)it really knocked the target backwards. I think Harl should bring the Hills too and leave the Morrison at home, he shoots the Hill's way better and unless the bunnies are the size of Kangaroos there will be no rabbit stew in his future.
-
We named him O.B.B. ( old bow bastard) kinda like the O.P.P.... ;) :goldtooth:
Looking forward to shooting that Hill, That's it Tom, no Shawnee...Hills only for you old fella...
I got some 675-700 gr ash to wing out of her for ya!
what does Theo and Phil shoot? we are gonna have quite a few bows around that weekend, will be fun to try out a bunch.
Wait till you guys see the eats that are planned.mmmmmmmmm!
only 3 weeks to go!
BD
-
The Shawnee will be staying at home this year.I will just bring the Hills and my lightweight 700 gr.arrows.
The widder is unfair because it will take an extra couple gallens of gas to carry the weight all that distance.I must admit Frank did zero in on the bullseye, but I told him he will not get many shots at 30 inches so he should practice longer shots.
Looking forward to this get together for sure now!!!!
The O.B.B.
-
I kinda like that! "O.B.B."...Jake come up with it though, so kudos to him.
Hills....mmmmm....I like them Hills.
Looking forward to it too, got some stuff rollin' life changes going on...I need some good times with good fellas!
Don't ferget yer trade goods...( 'cept you put a certain dog's name on them STOS heads ;) ;)
BD
-
May have some Douglas Fir arrows to bring if anybody needs 70# arrows. Those changes are gonna be sweet !!!!! :clapper:
-
sweet indeed Tom...sweet indeed... ;) ;) :bigsmyl:
I'm glad that more guys are coming this year, we may have some new things going on too.
C'mon, 24th and 25th!!!
BD
-
BRRRRRR. cold today, -29 w/windchill this aft( -21.2F) :scared: Daisy's pad's are healing, maybe with boots on she will be ready to go on the 24-25th, if not then we are gonna have to bust some brush! LOL
not calling for it to rise above -18-22c for the lows all this week, and that is WITHOUT the windchill.
Oh well this IS Canada in the winter right? good new is the pond behind With Manor is froze 1 foot thick, we have a good rink shovelled off, so anybody who wants to get in a little skating or shinny, feel free to bring your sticks and blades.
Looking forward to having a great bonfire on Sat too, probably after the morning hunt and after lunch.
BD
-
Well winter did take it's time getting here this year.I imagine it will try to make up for lost time.Frank is about the same height as daisy so maybe if daisy can't go .....
-
TOM......LOL!!!
it 's okay Frank, I'm not a whole lot taller, it may be me and you humping thru the junipers scaring them bunnies out.. :bigsmyl:
-
Good Morning To Cary's Crew,
I hope that everyone is in good spirits and that today is a better day than your last!!!! Brrrrrrrrrr it is way too cold for me today. I haven't received any food allergy concerns or food dislikes so I guess that there will be no trouble cleaning off your plates. I haven't started my baking yet or it would never survive the hungry thieves raiding my freezer! :scared: Hey Big dog, just make sure that you don't expect the cook to be fetching the bunnies, not going to be happening!!! Start packing so you won't forget anything and please bring enough clothes to dress warm. I don't want to have be playing nurse all weekend. Luke did you hear me????
How many more days until spring?
Kelly :saywhat: :coffee: :coffee: :coffee:
-
Hey big dog, funny I found the thread about an hour after I PMed you. It's good to see Tom and Frank are still giving to each other(hi guys).I should know in a couple days if I can make it.If I can make it maybe I can meet up with Tom or Frank and follow them to the shoot.
I can bring a martin ML 14 45#,damon howett recurve 55# and a Tomahawk thunderstorm 65#(that I got from Tom).
-
Cary,I was thinkin of tryin boots out on Sonny too.Gonna check and see if they have them in this weekend if not it,s not a big deal I,ve been puttin this stuff called tuff-feet on his pads besides runnin him.Stayed home last weekend with all the snow we have and the coooooooold wind it just wasn,t worth it.
GOOD LUCK EVERYBODY!!!
-
Gary,
So you know the wild fellas eh??I'm tellin' that Tom is a crazy S.O.B. or is that O.B.B.??? ;) :p So you would drive down #11 and meet them? is that longer or shorter for you?
Tom,
Daisy's boots were not cheap, but the leather pad bottom is great, They are nylon uppered and velcro fastening. They seem to work good for her.
Hopefully she is ready by the 24th.

I sure did, and I think that's great Kelly, you shouldn't have to take care of Cary, Jake and Tom like that. Way to stand up for yourself like that. I'm proud of you :)
-
Luke..... :scared: ;)
BD
-
Well Luke,
somebody might need a nurse and I will be there to the rescue if need be, I wouldn't let anyone suffer. Thanks for being so proud of me for standing up for myself,LOL... :biglaugh: Big dog you have been mentioning to everybody about Daisy's new booties, she certainly is feeling a little better and she runs all over the place skipping and jumping! She tuckered herself out so much today, that she is lying here beside me snoring up a storm! :biglaugh: :p She thinks that she is a princess.
She certainly doesn't waste her time out in the cold for too long! I'm just glad that she starting on the mend.

Only a couple more weeks to go, can't wait. I look forward to meeting those I have not met yet. Question; what goods are we trading? I have to see what I have to bring. Luke like I said I could supply a few arrows, I wouldn't worry about it. But I might want to be the one taking the pictures. From what I understand you all are great shots. After an afternoon of being embarased, I'll need a break. I look forward to the lessons.
-
We ain't all that good Nick...we just like to think we are! LOL "legends in our own minds"...Tom is a pretty good shot, but he has been shooting for about 50 years now!
BD

Nick,
the arrows have to be at least 30", maybe 31"....long octopus draw on that kid. :knothead: :archer:

Haven't been here for a while. Been too darn busy lately (work'n and not hunt'n) and just checked in to see this.
I wish I could make it out. Looks like you guys had a good time last year and it sure looks like it is warming up to be another this year.
I have 3 beagles who would of loved to make the trip but I will be just returning from Florida that weekend. Going down to the Daytona 500 and then off on a pig hunt. Have fun and looking forward to the follow up photo story.
Oh yeah. Keep an eye on that Ontario Longbow guy. What's wrong Frank? Your Widow too scared to come out and play with these boys? I could of been there as back up for you, but it's not going to work for me this year. 8*)
Scott aka Skinner

Well Scott, next year then???? :readit: :bigsmyl: :archer:
Daisy would love to run with 3 other howlers

SAD NEWS: Our beloved Tom (Harl, Old Bastard, Master Bastard) will not be able to make the trip, He quit his day job, ran away from home and is now making his living as an entertainer, Maybe his road trip will end in time for the bunny hunt??? We should all support him in his new career and wish him well, he moves pretty good though for an old guy,, Frank

Hey Cary's Crew,
I'm starting my baking today so I can hide it from the kids!!! ;) It is a beautiful day outside today and there is a sugar dusting of fresh snow. The sun makes the yard look like it is full of diamonds, with a trail of little bootie prints from Princess Daisy. :archer: Daisy is holding down her royal bed and stashing her stuffed bunny beside her. Maybe she is dreaming of the bunny hunt, who knows! The house will soon be filled with comforting aromas of spices and sugar, yum, yum... Don't forget to bring your appetites with you for the bunny hunt.
TFW

Just watched "Tom's" video LOL Now that was funny right there HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I know that Daisy is in capable hands to help her on the mend, Let's hope she is ready for at least 1 hunt with us. :smileystooges: BD
-
I just priced some camo hats and Doo-rags with
E.O.B.H.
Eastern Ontario Bunnyhunt
2007
They are camo, I like either, so If we decide to get them it would be about 20 bones a person or so( a bit less maybe)
The doo-rags are quite sturdy in construction.
This would only cover the cost, no $$ is being made.
I've sent emails , but to the guys whose emails I don't have and are thinking of coming; let me know on here, I have to order asap if they will be done on time.
:campfire: :archer:

Big dog,
That's fine, I use arrows a little longer then my draw. I can accomodate the 30" he needs. I just need to fletch a few so we aren't using the same arrows. I think I can provide the ones closes to his spine. I have a few + the ones you gave me.
-
Luke 30" arrows good for you? I know your arms are the length of my body LOL but you said something to me about having a shorter draw. I can fletch you some 30" allum. Will these be ok? I shoot 50# and the allums are a tad heavy, but they'll get the job done. At least you'll have arrows to fling at the bunnies. When we all get together we can see who can accomadate you best.
-
That sounds great Nick. I do tend to shortdraw sometimes, so 30" will probably work out. Do you need any 60-65 POC shafts? If so maybe we can work out a trade.
-
Luke,
Let me think on that. Jim Gorden from Mississippi Lakes Longbows, is in the process of creating one of his beauties for me. It will be heavier then the bow I'm using now, so I might be needing new arrows. But don't let me hold you back if you can sell them. I have a few dozen douglas fir squares I've been holding on to for a new bow. Once I get the bow I'll be making some sweet arrows to go with the sweet bow.;-)
-
Not meaning to ruin the trade- parade, but Nick I think that they will be too heavy for your bow, unless you throw some 160 gr. points on them...that may work for you.
Tom, your song was on the radio today!!! LOL made me think of you!
BD
-
More reason to use the Douglas fir.LOL
-
Get all the licks in while you can fellas !!!!
O.B.B.
-
I'm not planning on selling them, I'll bring them along if you want them. Come to think of it I think I also have a couple douglas fir 60-65 shafts, but I'm not sure how many. At least 6, maybe a dozen. I'll bring them along too if you want them. They're not going anywhere anyways, so if you decide you want them you're welcome to them.
-
All is good for the trading blanket... :bigsmyl: :campfire:
-
Well as it turns out I can't do the whole weekend :banghead:But I can be there by 7pm on saturday if that is ok.I hope I don't miss the trading blanket cause I got a couple of things in mind(remember what I like Luke?).You can count me in for a hat or a doo rag, whatever you decide on Cary.Should I bring a pocket full of fives so we can keep Tom dancing?I can also offer rides home for anyone going west.
John

I almost forgot my manners.THANK YOU very much Kelly for inviting us in to your home.

Good stumping today guys, was slow in the beginning but came around at about half time, I was more prepared dress wise this time so I was better off. The terrain looked good today, however not many bunny tracks. There are alot of tracks in the land we have in the back so perhaps they will be used as a more primary hunting ground, anywase, good stuff today, hopefully Ill be shooting better, come the EOBH.
Cheers, "Messin"
-
shotgun on the catquiver :D Don't think I have any of those things you're looking for though. I think I'll go try find a moose and knock his antlers off.
Here's what I'm taking
1) A couple aluminum arrows. not sure what size
2) 6 60-65 POC shafts
3) 6 60-65 douglas fir shafts
4) flintknapping DVD
Wish I had more to bring. I'll think of some stuff later. 2 weeks!
-
Yeah Jess, stumping was a good time yesterday, not the area(s) that we are gonna chase rabbits though! the areas we are gonna do that are thick with buckthorn, briars and slash piles.
No fun to bust thru, but hey, that's bunny hunting!
I'm probably gonna have some birch shafts for the table, a great Northern strap-on quiver, this thing is one of the originals...says "Great Northern Longbow company", it is still in great shape! prolly a collecters item now, but I would strap it on and go hunting.
;) :scared: :archer:
-
I'll have some screw in snuffers, screw in woodsmans and a doz.70# douglas fir arras.
O.B.B.

Carey, great to be invited to the event as I am reletively new at trad shooting.
Was out shooting with Tom and Frank who were outshooting me by miles. Got lots of good tips but none the less the Bunnys should be quite safe from me for now.
Maybe it's those arrows I bought from Tom -hmmmmmmm??(LOL)
-
You are welcome Phil! looking forward to meeting you and shooting with ya'.
you will have a blast.
with this huge storm coming we may have to tunnel under the snow to find them bunnies!
LOL
30-50cm on the way, high winds, windchills of -30+...blizzard conditions for sure.
 :bigsmyl:

We will have to keep an eye on Frank if the snow gets too deep.Don't wanna lose him. :D
-
Man, it is gonna be a bad one Tom, they are saying that the areas along the St. Lawrence river are gonna be slammed as the storm intensifies on its way to the east...
We'll have to get a bell for Frank. ;) :archer:

-
Hello Gentlemen,
it is only 6 more days until the crew starts arriving... We are very busy making room for all of our guests...Daisy is on the mend and is frantically chasing her stuffed bunny around the house. We still have a few menu changes to make, but I think that we will do just fine. There is about a foot of snow +++ in the bush and the temp is about -10. There is a big pile of wood to burn at the firepit and Cary is busy making paths to the back of the barn. The kids are getting very excited and have promised to be helpers for our event. :campfire: We are looking forward to seeing new and familiar faces.
See you soon,
Kelly

-
WELL???!!!!
-
Okay folks, I will get the ball rolling here...
Friday afternoon, I was done all the set-up and we were waiting on our hunters to arrive. the first one to arrive after a long 7 hour drive was Gary Blackburn aka "northern fisher", we got him in the house , got his gear stowed and commenced to chatting and waiting. Jim Godden , the bowyer for "Mississippi Lake Longbow"was next to roll in, followed by Olaf( Greybeard) and his son Mike.
Next in was Jake H...he was the recipient of a brand new spanky Turkey bow from Mississippi Lake Longbow.60", 50#'s @27; maple core, osage limbs and a Wenge riser..very pretty little bow.( and I didn't forget ya Jake...LOL, you are like family and are here so much, I must have figured you were here already!!!)
Luke and Tim Greer( Seeza) were the next pair to come in.
The basement was filling up with bows and gear pretty quick!
We headed upstairs where some hot black bean soup, shrimp, smoked salmon and other goodies were waiting.
So far 8 of us were here and conversing up a storm, Olaf had a new toy, fresh from Oregon to play with, a DAS master hunter! I was anxious to see that baby. I'm pretty sure the arriving hunters knew whose mailbox to turn at... ;) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v611/ashstyk/burnt%20trip/IMGP0719-1.jpg)
BD :bigsmyl:
-
We stayed up prety late Friday nite by the firepplace, drinkg beverages and talking all things bowhunting.
The next morning we woke and started into the first of a day of large FOOD!, a huge breakfast was served up and the remainder of the guys came rolling in from their long drives.
Tom( Harl), Phil Jestin, Ontario Longbow ( Frank), And Theo Riechart, the inventor of the Journeyman-eclipse broadhead all came in at the same time.
After greeting s and some toy-envy..LOL,
We had some grub and geared up for the hunt.
As we were getting ready Nick ( Patience ) rolled in and proceeded to hurriedly get changed.
We went to the butt and proceeded to fling some arrows of all types and sizes, there was some pretty good shooting going on. :)
The sun was out and the weather was deemed warm enough to get out there and bust some brush!!
Daisy my beagle was ready but here foot was not quite ready to tackle a full afternoon of busting briars and thorns; not to mention the chance encounter with one of our big northern Coyotes; she would be little match for one of them.
-
Away we went, bound for an area 10 minutes away that was known for its population of cottontails and thick brush...  ...the snow was hip deep in places, just ask Harl who stepped in a hole and was up to his armpits in snow..LOL!!!
immediately we were into some tracks, and fresh sign. here are a few pics of the fellas getting ready. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v611/ashstyk/burnt%20trip/IMGP0790.jpg)
-
The pic is a bit far away...my daughter took it..LOl here is the rundown
L to R. Jesse( messinwithsasquatch), Tom ( Harl), Seeza( Tim Greer), Greybeard(Olaf), olaf's son, Mike,Northern fisher( Gary), Theo, Phil, Ontario Longbow(Frank), Jake H, Patience ( Nick), Yours truly, Luke, and Jim Godden, ( missing was Barry Baker who showed up later)
-
Also missing is Sergio Venneri, who showed up later with a bag of goodies, some Paul Schafer home movies, along with some bear hunt video that Sergio has from his many hunts.
-
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v611/ashstyk/burnt%20trip/IMGP0789.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v611/ashstyk/burnt%20trip/IMGP0802.jpg)
-
Some of the fellas in front of the house during a lull in the shooting, also the boys kicking snow to look for the arrow that TOM LOST BY MISSING THE BALE!!! he he he..Tom is a longbow shooter extrodinaire; but his first shot with the DAS was a bit off....LOL
-
We hit the place we were parking and bailed out ready to go.
The snow was very deep and the brush thick and thorny, just the spot for bunnies! after a few small pushes and lots of sign, we headed to the main area, this spot was brutally thick and almost impossible to get through.
We pushed the bush, and a few minutes in ahead of me lazily hopping away and snubbing his bunny-nose was a real big cottontail...I tried a few times to find room to draw my bow but a 64"longbows was not to be drawn in this stuff...  :banghead: All I could do was yell to Gary who was 40 yards away thru the tangle that the bunny was on its way to him.
-
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v611/ashstyk/burnt%20trip/IMGP0793.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v611/ashstyk/burnt%20trip/IMGP0794.jpg)
Getting ready, Ontario Longbow, toting his HH bow; ready for the bunnies, unfortunately, some of the snow would be up to Frank's chest !!!! ;) ;) :goldtooth:
-
We made the brutal push to the tower that would be our meeting place, the stuff was so thick that some of the guys were slowed to a snail's pace to try to get through, bunny tracks were everywhere, so were coyote tracks..never a good mix for the rabbits who always come out on the short end of the food-chain stick. ;)
Olaf jumped one on his way out and watched as it hopped away, he wasn't about to shoot across a busy road to his credit; I'm pretty sure the bunny flipped Olaf the bird as it sped away. :)
-
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v611/ashstyk/burnt%20trip/IMGP0795.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v611/ashstyk/burnt%20trip/IMGP0797.jpg)
Jesse after breaking into a bit of open ground, and Olaf, Nick and Mike taking a break at the tower after the hard slogging drive thru the bush, 2 bunnies were pushed, no shots were made though, this was a blast!!
-
We were waiting for 3 lost hunters to make thier way out of the jungle...finally we saw Tom, Tim and Luke coming across the field looking very bedraggled and beat-up...time to move to the next spot!
-
more pics and story a bit later on, wait until you see the trade-table pics!!! :)
BD
-
Even though she took ill just before the hunt started, Kelly aka "the forest witch", was a super hostess!!! we all ate more than our fill and the food was never-ending..
From me and all of the hunters, THANK YOU KELLY!!!! :) :) :) , you were definatley the star of the show.
BD (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v611/ashstyk/burnt%20trip/IMGP0812.jpg)

How do you keep a huge living room full of beverage and food plied trad shooters quiet???????  ;) :campfire:
-
Enter Sergio Venneri...this great guy has hunted and hung out with the best, the Wensels, Scott Koelzer, Roger Rotharr, Jack Kempf, Jim Emerson, and the topic of the quiet room??? the man himself, Paul Schafer! We were being treated to some home movies of Paul on his Cape Buffalo hunts, elk hunts and goat hunts on the 60" flat screen!!! Sergio has hunted and shot with Paul and has a ton of stories...let me say that when he was holding court the room was pin-drop quiet!
Sergio was a big hit and is a great guy. Plans are being made on my part for the long trip north to hang out with him at his place in Northern Ontario.
BD ( Sergio is the guy in the middle, grey vest and khaki pants) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v611/ashstyk/burnt%20trip/IMGP0810.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v611/ashstyk/burnt%20trip/IMGP0811.jpg)

more pics of the hunt, more bunny stories and such later on, gotta clean up from the weekend...YIKES!
BD
-
okay, short break form trying to find the vacuum cleaner. ;)
The third big push was down a ATV trail on the south side of a hugh berm loaded with brairs, buckthorns and snarled piles of brush, Olaf had told us on his previous push it looked like a bunny superhighway in there.
Yes there were hundreds of tracks all along this 1/4 mile stretch, a lot of fox and coyote tracks as well. Some guys decided to walk around the huge stone quarry to see if any were out on the southern facing slopes catching some rays.
Me, Tim and Jesse walked the north side of the berm while Jake tackled the top; a daunting feat due to the nasty sharp stuff on top.
We got Done our side, looked down the trail and there were a bunch of bowhunters scanning the thick brush for some little brownhides that had been jumped and were now hunkered down in thier bunny-bunkers of buckthorn, briars and prickly ash
:)
We hurried down and were told that an untold number of bunnies had squirted out and were hiding in there.
Jake, Gary and Nick were on top working thier way down to the hidey holes to try to spook them out.
bunnies were seen moving, none offered shots in that stuff though.
Anybody who has heard people refer to the "bush"in Ontario, or has bear hunted up here in thick bush will have an idea of what I'm talking about, it is as inpenetrable as the jungles of Cambodia in spots; real crazy thick stuff!
We waited and waited while the guys made there way down, but some of the tunnels under that stuff were yards deep and probably all thru the cover.
the bunnies were safe in thier bunkers, we were tired, hot, bleeding and a cold beer or 6 was sounding real good about now. :)

Some of us after the tiring, thorn-studded push, some tired hot and sweaty hunters in that wool right there!

It was a great time and a great bunch of people. The knowledge and advice was endless. I know that I learnt a few things. I was happy to put faces to names, know I just need to remember all the names????LOL. I look forward to the next get-together.
-
Frank, if it wasn't coming from Cary, I would say that we should be offended by these short jokes. :biglaugh: Truth be told; I looked down the line once. There was a few of us waist high in snow, then Luke. I swear he was standing on the snow. For any of you that have seen the lord of the rings (1st one), when the troop is trudging through the side of the mountain. That's what it looked like. I need to find out how he does it.
-
I think it's because Luke only weighs 3 lbs.
Jake
(who thinks Luke also has an unfair advantage when carp shooting because he doesn't SINK into the water)
-
Hey Cary and Kelly,, Thanks again the hospitality was wonderful ,, really had a great time, best part was meeting everyone in person from the Trad Gang and making new friends. See you soon,, Frank.
-
Hey Cary's Crew
I was glad to hear that all of you had a great time at the Witch's Manor. :scared:
Anyways, everyone get rested up and and prime your appetites for the next Gibson adventure. Happy hunting until next time,
Kelly
-
Well we got back after the first days hunt and the shooting games were getting ready to go after we warmed up a bit at the bale.
I had designed a bigger and better swinging rabbit target this year that had the benefit of a person swinging it to keep it moving.
The old deadeye himself Sergio nailed the can and a root beer was sprung!!! LOL, the silvertip had spoken...a bit later after a few hundred shots... ;) ;)Jim proved that not only can he make great bows, he can shoot them to as he leaked the can as well.
BD (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v611/ashstyk/burnt%20trip/IMGP0803.jpg)
-
Next up was the "Mult-position"shoot, you had to try whatever the guy ahead of you was trying to attempt.
there were some pretty funky shots being made, but I was most amazed when either Tim or Jim layed down on thier back and shot the bale like that, NAILING THE TARGET!!! did I mention these longbows are highly adaptable???? ;) :) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v611/ashstyk/burnt%20trip/IMGP0807.jpg)
-
Sounds great, did ya get any bunnies or shots? Shawn

nice pics luke. So the big question is.... did you guys see any of the little hopping variety?
-
Frank and Shawn, yes we saw bunnies , quite a few. But the cover was too thick to get off any shots.
Remember, this is Ontario and we have a very large and healthy population of fox, coyotes, and hawks; all of which take their toll on the rabbits.
Especially as the season goes on later into the winter.
They get thier feed, and the remaining bunnies are well trained on how to evade ANY type of hunters, 4 legged, 2 legged or winged. ;)
As soon as you cross the border ( St. Lawrence River) and get about an hour or so south of us, the coyotes and hawks are not near as bad, or as big as the ones up here, also the numbers are not as high in the dog ranks south of here as they are up here.
The bunnies made an appearance, but we could not get anything away due to the thick cover.
All in all it was a great time though, even though no bunnies except the wooden breed were killed. :)
BD
-
the main problem was that when we got them to move, the area that was really thick was so large that all they would do is find another hidey-hole in the thick stuff, there was no way short of dynamite to get them to come out of the cover.
And i don't care how good a shot you are? nobody could have snaked an arrow into that crap!! LOL!!! :readit: :goldtooth: more pics to come today!

We had a vote to decide who showed the most unbridled , body sacrificing , dive into the thick stuff, enthusiasm; by a close vote( 1 vote) Gary, aka Northern fisher won a set of Gorrila climbing sticks! , he was a human bulldozer while busting them bunnies out of the cover.

-
to be quite honest I knew that even seeing bunnies up here this time of year would be tough, but we saw a bunch and even had some legitimate chances, but them bunnies are wayyy too smart for us Ontario hunters!! lol
I really do these so that a bunch of us trad hunters that live up here have a chance to get together and meet, shoot and share some good times.
Our province is so vast( you can fit a couple of Texas's in here :bigsmyl: ) that we don't get alot of opportunity to meet each other very often.
this event, the deer hunt I host and the Carp-a-palooza , gives us a chance to meet and greet.
We all agreed, the bunnies were a very small part of the weekend. With all of the great food around, no-one was too anxious to skin rabbits and cook them..not a chance!! LOL
Besides, when we are used to real big deer, moose and bears??? rabbits are a little tid-bit on the menu!
All in all, it was a super time for all, alot of hard work getting it ready and during the hunt, but it was all worth it in the end to see the smiling, laughing and good hearted ribbing going on in the house and on the range.
My thanks to all who came out.
Besides Gary's grand prize win, we also had 2 door prizes won, a real nice dry box for storing gear was given away on both days.
Tim won one of them, and Jim the other.

Saturday early evening was really busy, lots of food, trading going on at the table and it sounded like a hive of activity in the house.
I was really interested in seeing Theo's prototype Journeyman broadheads and how they are put together.
It was worth holding the hunt just to have the inventor of the Journeyman head show me how to properly sharpen these great heads.
Man, Theo showed me how to get a head popping sharp with a Tom Davidson file aka a BASTARD file ;) :p :p and crock sticks, in about 2-3 minutes he had a n unsharpened head literally POPPING hair from his arm. I was amazed and promptly threw everyhting I thought I knew about sharpening out the window on the spot.
It was pretty cool.
That same day I was introduced to Roy Hall's Navajo Caddo longbows. Tim had 2 of them, the one that I shot and liked was a 60" 47#s at 27"bow.
I was shocked at the way a bow that light could throw a heavy tapered ash arrow of 625-675 grains!
The first shot from about 35 yards was 2"from the bull, the next was dead center!!I could not believe how quiet this bow shot and how dead in the hand it was. I proceeded to put 3 more arrows within 2" of the rest. Tim told me that bow was made for me and also said that he would be sleeping with one eye open and one hand firmly around his bow!!! :goldtooth:
I was duly impressed and made a note in the brain about those caddo bows...

Yeah bunnies at the end of the year are the survivors. They are a lot harder to get now than any other time of the year.
Looks like a lot of fun though.

A quick note to all who came, Sergio said we should all meet this april 29th at the 3D shoot in Chelsea, Quebec, it is just across the border from Ottawa.
Closest thing we have here to a Denton hill type of deal. Trad shoot, tons of vendors, good eats, great shoot, 40 targets in a row.
Real rugged terrain, the Gatineau hills.
I would be fun to go and shoot with our big group.
Let us know if it could happen.

You should open a new topic over in the events forum and then put the link to it over here for reference.
Definately sounds like something we want to get orgainized!
