Title: Matlock predator X
Post by: dragonheart on November 25, 2007, 10:14:00 PM
Does anyone have a picture of one of these bows?  Any information on these bows, I know they are not being made anymore, anyone had one?  How do they shoot?

Jeff

My father and I own four Matlock Predator X Longbows. All are very unique in their own design, however, all of them shoot very smooth and fast. I will try to figure out how to download a couple of pics in the next couple of days. Wonderful bows, very underrated. T

I have not had the chance to shoot a Matlock but I have seen them in action. They are fast and quiet. I would like to find one myself but you don't see them for sale very often.

Great fast bows.  They use to be my 3M bows...Matlock, Massie, & Morrison.  Very highly reflex/deflex with a comfortable thumb groove.  I still have several plus one of Bill's personal bows with Cobra skin backing.  Tips are very distinct on all the Matlocks I've seen.  Also very effective...Doc

The very last X-3 he built before his stroke is in a private collection with a friend of his in New Mexico. He is building bows again though.

Vermonster, I'd like to talk to Bill if you have a contact number for him.   Always wondered about something he had on his web page.   My understanding is his old site is still good however he never did ask Pat to renew it, so Pat didnt....

Anyways, it'd be great if you had one.  I'm not interested in buying, just some info.

Dan

This one may still be good. 417-796-2733 I haven't spoken to him since his health failed and he is making very few bows and only for a single shop that I know of.

Val had given me a number way back when but it never seemed anyone answered.   NO emails, or phone calls returned or picked up.   I'll give that one a try thanks.

You fellas are awesome with the info, really appreciate it.  Since I just got a Bighorn Ramhunter from 7eyes that I really like, and as long as he does not want to trade back, I better not buy the Matlock I saw for sale this close to Xmas.  if anyone has a copy of that book i would like to buy or borrw also, please PM me.  Wishing the best to everyone, and shoot where you are looking.

Longbows & Short Shots,
Jeff

7,

I have it, You might call Bill and see if you can't get a copy.   I'll email Val, if the email is still good and see if she doesnt have one.  If not, we'll figure out a way to get you one.

DH,

If you really want one, I'd buy it, it maybe years before you find one again that is remotely close to the specs you are looking for for sale.

I recieved my predator After Bill's stroke.I had it on order and in the middle of my wait time Bill had the stroke. He had a fellow come in a help him finish up but in the middle of my bow the guy quit.Val e-mailed me and offered my money back or I could continue to wait untill bill was able to complete my bow.i chose to wait and I got my bow some time later. The finish is a little rougher than most of his bows but the fact that he was even able to do it was a testament to him.I hope to seem him making bows again some day, mine sure is a shooter.

The email I had for Val is no longer good.   Last I talked to her was 2003, that I can tell anyways.  Let me know if Bill has it or not.

The last I heard Bill and Val had moved to the Farmington, NM area. I checked the Farmington phone book and there is a William Matlock listed at 505-632-3400. I also have two of his bows and love them. Ronda, what are the specs on your lefty? I might be interested.

Matlock fan here. (I've got his tuning book).
To me his bows are like "muscle cars", not much for eye candy (Tippit's bow is an exception) but they smoke an arrow.

1. Predator X2
2. Predator X2 Carbon- I sold it because it was too heavy for me.
3. Predator Classic (Straight limbed, Hill-style bow).
4. Predator X2 He made for his wife, now ex. I bought it from her. For a 32# bow it burns an arrow. It has a unique riser:

Does anyone know if the Matlocks still make/sell their special hollow-tailed arrows?  When they still had their website I read the explanation of why theses arrows were suppose to perform so well and it seemed to make sense. Bill also had his own custom designed fletching on the arrows, different but very cool looking.
I have one of their arrow straightening tools and it works pretty good, also have their tuning guide - a lot of good info.
