This Friday was my maiden trip of the year after beaver. This year has been a tough one. I was shut out during the deer season. I didn't even have a shot at a legal deer.
The conditions were perfect. The water was calm and the moon was bright. It didn't take long to get into some action.
I was out with a couple of trad gang members Mike G and Mr. C. Mike got the nights frist kill. He shot a very large beaver and put two excellent shots on it but we couldn't find it. We decided to give it some time and come back later to look for it. I was having a little trouble. I couldn't find my good tabs and had to use one I keep in the car for emergencies. Well, this was one. I seemed to be more than just a little off throughout the evening.
After alot of action we decided to go check on Mikes' big boy. As we entered the cove there were two bright white flecthings sticking out of the water. His beaver had expired while tring to get to the bank. It was a real pig.
My turn again. We came up on one climbing out of the water and this time I finally put everything together. I put another anchoring shot into him and we watched him give his last kicks in the water. The only problem is that we couldn't get the boat to him. We could see him, just not get to him. Mike the "beaver retriever" to the rescue. He jumped out onto a clump of exposed bank and tried to get a net on it. Finally we had to put a rope around it and haul it in. Getting Mike back in the boat was another adventure!
Chuck even got into the action with a solid connection on a beaver later in the night.
What a great night out with a couple of real fine gentelmen.

Nice job! This may be a dumb question but does one hunt them for the meat *and* the skin or just the skin.
All right, smarties - that's a serious question. Get yer minds outta the gutter. :-p
Lifetime supply of beaver balls there!
That has got to be fun hunting!
I have a leg in the freezer. Some say the tail is really good to eat.
It's always a pleasure to be out on a Hunt with Bill and Mr. Chuck....
Beaver Huntin the most fun ya can have with your cloths still on....
Thanks Mike for not telling the "rest of the story".
Damn, beavers in the moonlight? That sounds way too cool! I've hunted coons, hogs and frogs at night but never beavers. I think I'd be a helpless addict very quick. Nice critters fella's!
:bigsmyl:
Never have tried that before. Hunting with friends at night and getting away with it is always a good time.
Man that sounds like a blast, i would love to do that one day. Conrats to both of you  :goldtooth:
Wow, those are great! I too have heard the tail is a delicacy. It never fails to make me jump a yard or two whenever I am getting in my duck blind and a beaver givers that alarm slap on the water. I'll have to try this sometime. Regards.
Bill....
Some things should be left on the river....
You owe me breakfast....
Ck....
We do use a Boat, see the one in the picture....
I like them when there about 10 yds out and swimming....
Instinctive shootin at it's best....
Way to go guys!!!
Sounds like a whole lotta fun, Bill!!!!
Scott,
It's just about as much fun as you can have with a bow and arrows. It helps that I have a couple of great friends to share the experience with.
Hey Curlis, I meant to ask if this would be a good type of hunting to do out of my canoe or do you need to cover a lot of open water to get on em?
Man-I clicked on this thinking we would get to talk about the shopping we did on "black Friday" last week. I got a great deal on a blind and a new tree stand.
But seriously, looks like you guys had a blast. Way to go!
Kate
I have seen it all now, nice beaves.
I love seeing different things taken with bows, guys. Nice. That's adventure, there!
I suppose you got the "beaver fever" now. Sounds like the title of a new video...maybe add it to the next tradgang DVD.
Sounds like fun! Thanks for sharing! ;)
I use to trap a lot of beavers and we would crockpot and BBQ the meat and eat it on sandwhiches. It is very good, like fine textured beaf almost.
There is nothing you want in the tail, just bones and some nasty gristle. Remember who was eating tails, some old mtn men with no access to fatty meats, living all winter in a cold cabin.
