Title: New Boots For my Ol Man?
Post by: Deadbolt on November 23, 2007, 05:06:00 PM
Heya all I was wondering if you guys could help me pick out a new set of boots for my ol man.  After hunting NY this past week and came home empty handed and complaining his feet FROZE.  He doesn't do rubber boots not his style he likes all purpose boots.  So I was wondering which do you think are better between these two?

$$$$ isn't an issue here which are the best boots?  We do lots of walking being that these will also be used for small game.

Your opinions?

A person's feet typically get cold because their boots are too tight and sothereis insuffucient dead air space for insulation. Both those boots are good quality but I would get one size biggger that normal length and one size wider if possible. I wear a size 11.5 or 12 wide. I wear my sneakers to the stand and switch to size 13 4E pack boots on stand with just a pair of silk liners socks and a medium weight wool sock and I often have feet too warm and it makes me drowsy sometimes.

I have a pair of 1000 gr thinsulate bruin boots from Cabelas. My feet get cold easy and these work good for me, when it's real cold i wear a thin pair of liner socks with a pair of wool socks, my feet stay warm for many hours on a cold stand.

I just bought a pair of the Danners Pronghorns and they are very nice. I have one foot that hurts a lot from having flat feet. I came home yesterday and noticed I didn't have any pain in my foot. These boot are very comfortable and warm. You can't go wrong with these boots, check the reviews on them.

I like my Redwing work boots the very best. No insulation to start my feet a sweating. Tight fit and sweating will make cold feet faster than anything I know. I am a plumber and work outside everyday and they prove themselves day after day, so why change just to go hunting. Mike Smyth

Russel Moccasin Co. of Berlin, WI - do a search for them. Hand made in America the old way and custom fit to the individual. I like the south 40 birdhunter boot with soft soles.

I recently bought a pair of Schnees Hunter II's. Simply put, these are the best walking/hunting boot I have ever owned. Bedroom slipper comfortable, tough and warm.

When I last went out a few weeks ago, the temperature was about minus 10 C (about 15 F) with a 20 knot NW wind and blowing snow. Took me 3 hours to walk back home in that mess, sometimes in knee deep snow and I frequently broke through the ice over frozen streams. My feet were never cold. (As an aside, I was wearing all wool - longjohns, pants, inner & outer shirt & jacket).

I love these boots.

Bonus: Schnees are made in the USA and they are a pleasure to deal with.

My two bits' worth.

Well, they ain't warm, but for kicking crap in a corner you can't beat them Merle Haggard "manly footwares." Otherwise, go with Schnee Thinsulate lined rubber pacs. d

Deadbolt,

At a glance I would pick the Danners but I would personally have to try them on and see how they feel.

Just a suggestion... maybe you should give him a gift certificate and the two of you could go to Cabela's so he can try them on first. That would save the hassle of returning them if they don't work out. Besides you may find something cool for yourself too.

The only thing I don't like about Danner is that most of their models are made in China.  I know many other things are, but I've reached the point which when I see "made in China" on the tag, I put it back on the shelf.

That being said, I have a pair of Danner Strikers I wear with my uniform.  They were the most comfortable boots I could get at the time.  My BX didn't have any Made in the USA boots in my size and I had to have a new pair of boots right away.

"when I see "made in China" on the tag, I put it back on the shelf."

roknjs:

Man, you and I are on the same page. I am the same way, although there are a few odd Chinese items that appear to be of good quality such as the pair of wool pants that I recently purchased from Cabellas.

For the most part though, I avoid Chinese manufactured items. They are generally of poor quality and I prefer to support our Canadian/American industries anyway. It is getting harder and harder to do that though.

I wouldn't own another pair of Irish Setters if my life depended on it.  I spent two miserable weeks in the mountains of Idaho with a pair of them that leaked like a sive in 34 degree temps.  Company told me that was "too bad".

Have a pair of Danner Proghorns, they are pretty good.  Very comfortable and I've put a lot of miles on them.  I would buy another pair of them if I wear these ones out. dino

I just spent all day in my Schnee Hunter II's.

Once your old man sees the quality of these boots, he'll be more than OK with rubber bottoms.

I leave my Russell Moccasin Sheep Hunters in the closet...
