I have one and the the baleen is on the belly; the back is bamboo with the nodes showing.  It is absolutely beautiful.  Haven't shot it much yet - just a tad heavy for me right now.

If you're talking Jack Harrison, I don't think he makes them anymore, but I can ask.

jack harrison is technicly retired, but he may be making them on the side.  he sold the company to fisk and it is now harrison-fisk archery and i believe he is in texas.  he continues to make the bows and they are amazing in every way.

Yes Jack will make you a bow, the Jack Harrison HSS but it's not baleen. Isn't baleen on one of those goverment lists of animal parts you can't have like Bald Eagle feathers?

Flyarcher, if that bow is a Harrison and you ever want to sell it, please drop me a PM. Harrison bows are the best ever made IMO.

Yes, this bow was made by Jack.  I agree, there's nothing else like like an original Harrison.  Until I shot one of his bows, I was always looking for something "better" (and I have more bows than I'd like to admit).  After I shot a Black Wolf, it was all over - just wanted more of Jack's bows.

The bow is called the Harrison Cane Classic.  It's 70", 63# @ 28".

Just left Jack,s and watched a video he made of how to take a longbow, cut it in half and put a composite joiner on it.  Have two of his original bows and this one is about a pound lighter.  Now I just have to convince myself to come up with the bucks.

I'll see if I can get some photos of the process and post them.

Baleen are the stiff, bristles lining the jaws of certain whale species..i.e. humbacks or blue whales.  It is used in filtering out plankton for the whales to feed.

The problem with baleen is that it is regulated by the US goverment and the world.  You can buy it, but you can not resell it legally.  The only stuff you can buy legally is if it is harvested before the ban was put in place.  The stuff on the street would be good if you are building a bow for your self.  But if you sell it, you are breaking federal law.

That's why I use horn.

Wingnuts correct , sell it or trade it and you have violated federal marine mammal laws.
You can buy it full lenght and use it yourself but do not even make knife handles and sell it.
Trust me you do not want to break any federal game laws.

One way it is legal to sell it is if it has been scrimshawed (sp??). Then it's "art".

Post by: wingnut on January 30, 2008, 07:38:00 PM
Actually art or not, if it was harvested after the ban, it's illegal in any form to be resold.

if anyone could ask jack or knows if he would make one if i provide the baleen

That's the problem, the natives sell it in the raw too.  But I can't process and build a bow out of it, then sell the bow.  Kinda crazy but not a law I want too mess with.

The baleen splits very easy, I helped Jack build a couple with bamboo.  Most of them broke or the baleen split anyway.  It was beautiful stuff one look like the northern lights when it was outside in the sunlight.  But it is government regulated and only good for a wall hanger.

i bet that yours newell has a pretty thick piece almost full width.  Im shure if you start shaving it down it would get pretty brittle, maybe the baleen is ment for monsters only hahaa oh well
