After my fiasco with Rocky and all the replies I received favoring Danner, I went with the Danner Pronghorns.
Actually, my son Steve is a vendor for Cabelas because they carry his dry rubs. He got me the boots as an early Xmas gift. Here's my evaluation, very comfortable, broke in easily and are warm. My problem...I hate the soles. They are not air bob and I find these Danners very slippery.
As a ground hunter, I need traction, especially when stillhunting rutting bucks. I find myself slipping and sliding over rocks and wet leaves. My ballet moves have improved but my back aches!
Even Southpawshooter was laughing at me doing one of my many spin-balance-grab a limb moves.
I'll be searching again next year for the right boot...just may have to give Schnee a call.

I just picked up a pair of Pronghorns and I love them, Like you said , very comfortable-But mine are very easy to walk with-great traction even in wet leaves- greatest ankle support of any boot I own!!John Benetti

I'm with 52 bow on this. I've had a pair of Pronghorns for a couple of years and really like them. I wore them on an elk hunt in Colorado (read that as really tough country) and last year on a caribou hunt in Quebec. They worked great. Comfortable, water proof and warm. No problem what so ever with the soles.

Love mine..no comparison to Rockies!!
-
Im also a fan of the Pronghorns. I used them in the rockies also, and they performed flawlessly. I will own another pair as backups.

I got my first pair four years ago before an elk hunt and absolutely fell in love with these boots. It got to the point i was running six miles a day with these boots before my trip. Never had any problems with them. On my third pair right now and would put them to the test with any other boot on the market.

Joe,
You might want to check these out. Danner Canadian hunting boots: Canadian 10" 600 Gram Thinsulate. They have the air bob Danner sole.

I wear Danners at work. I beat to death two pair of boots a year. Danners have held up the best. In water, sand, city streets, and on the freeway. I crawl in semi's and stay wet on tracks. Rockys dont last 4 months.
-
I received my Danner Jackals from Cabela's last week, and they are probably the most comfortable boots I've ever owned.

I have danner superslams, Very comfortable and great traction, I took the original soles out and put SOFSOLES in. the only problem I have with them is that they CREAK, a bit on the noisy side even after treating them.
-
My first year in Danners, most comfortable boot I have ever worn.
Mine don't seem slippery, but maybe I don't hit the same type of terrain.
-
I've had a pair going on three years and as stated above they are excellent. However the pair I had were the uninsulated and the waterproofing wasn't so great. No problem traction wise. I would by them again only next time I'll get the insulated.
-
Joe, I'm with you on the Pronghorn's. I bought a pair for an elk hunt last year. They really are one of the most comfortable boots I've ever had, but I wasn't very confident in the soles. We had some nasty weather, in some really rugged terrain, and I think I hit the dirt four different times on that trip. Twice was while crossing streams on wet slippery rocks, so maybe any boot would have tossed me, but I blamed the soles.
When it gets really rugged and steep, I like something with a more aggressive tread. This year I bought a pair of Meindl hikers and they did great for me.
I still have the Pronghorns, and will definately use them again in less severe situations.
-
I love my Danners. I have the 600 gram side zip pronghorn and the uninsulated GTX boots. I love em. Of course, I only hunt deer, turkey and small game here in PA. Not real rugged terrain, but I wouldn't trade em for any other boots (cept maybe different style Danners)...Mike

The canadians may be what you want.Very tough and with the sole you want.Best boot I have used!
-
In my line of work I walk...alot...a whole lot.
I've been wearing danner boots every day for over 15 years. I think I have about 5 different pairs now.
Pronghorns, jackals, Eagles, combat, etc.... They are the best boot I have ever worn, period.

Ive had the Canadians for 9 years, have put a few miles on them and they still don't leak when I cross a stream .worth the price every bit.
-
I like mine too.

My Danners are without question one of the best boots I have ever owned. They are at par with a pair of custom hunting boots I had made for me by Viberg Boots out of Victoria, BC. and cost half as much.
I do a lot of upland bird hunting with my labs and they always seem to take me where I really don't want to go- thorn thickets, brier patches, phragmite infested ditches and other God forsaken places - and my Danners have never let me down. THESE BOOTS REMAIN WATERPROOF AFTER YEARS OF ABUSE.
-
looks like i might have to try a pair of Dannres myself. i have not owned a boot yet that i can say was really good. Rockies are by far the worst i have owned but for the price i get them for work every year.
-
I picked up a pair of the Danner Frontiers (which my have evolved to something else by now)several years ago. They were 1000 gr thinsulate, which is way too warm for bow season in these parts, but couldn't pass up 1/2 price clearance in July. They feel like bedroom slippers, are bulletproof, and can be re-soled as well. Best boots I've owned. A nice reminder on my feet in Jan.-Feb., when the seasons have long closed and I've got cabin fever.
-
I'll admit I really like the boots and the terrain I bowhunt in is rugged but I'm disappointed in the soles.
Glad to see so many fellas using Danners and are happy with them. Just gonna have to be more careful when easing around those wet areas.
-
I've used Danner boots for the last 4 years. Been very pleased with them, and will continue to use them. I go through a pair in about 10-12 months, due to all the walking and use.
You are correct, the Pronghorns and the Sharptails are slippery on wet rocks and streams, but I don't know if I've ever had a pair of boots that wasn't in those conditions?
-
After years of going through all of the "name brand" boots, I bought a pair of Russell boots from Russell Moccasins. Pricey but they'll only need resoleing every couple of years. They are at www.Russellmoccasin.com. (http://www.Russellmoccasin.com.) You can have any sole you want put on them.
They're now the only shoe I wear. Even bought a couple of pairs of their casual shoes for work.
-
Pronghorns are the best boot I've ever owned by far. Mine have peformed well in the Sierra's and Sawtooth's.
-
Love my pronghorns that Kelly bought for me, sweet lady that she is... :)
Best leather boot I have owned.

I have 3 pair of Danners. Remember that some of them are not made in the U.S. 1pr of Instigator for when it's hot, 1pr of Danner lites for work and a 1pr of Raptor type (10 years old). after talking with Danner , they informed me that the "Stiched Down" were the only ones made in the U.S. That being said, I have never had any problems with any boots from Danner. Great customer service. And the have my size 13eee

After reading these post I am convinced that the Danner boots are not the problem. The problem is obviously Joe and Whip. Maybe it is their gait. I'm heading to Cabela's next week to try on several styles of Danner boots. Thanks for the input. :campfire:
-
Why don't you get new soles put on by a cobbler. I have done this to many boots while in the Marine corps. Should cost about $35.00 then you have the sole you want the boots you already paid for.

I'm ready for bed cause I'm heading to Jersey tomorrow to hunt with Bamboo and Southpawshooter.
I checked the Pronghorns...made in China....My gait? Slow and sneaky...The few streams we cross...we jump over. Plenty of sidehills and rolling hardwoods along with some steep climbs.
Calling for rain tomorrow....I'll just be more careful.

Get a pair of chippewa boots. Best boots I've ever had and you can resole them, also great traction.
-
anyone used the Jackals in wet conditions? it seems it might be kind of slick too. Guess stalking type boots are a trade off in the best traction.
I have 2 pairs of Danners, The Acadia, and desert acadia boots. both are very comfortable, great support and tough. But they are heavy.
the deserts are too hot for the desert but very comfy from 65 down to freezing temps with appropriate socks. Soles are vibram lug, great for traction but these ain't no stalking boots. But your feet will love you at the end of the day. I have had my black boots resoled once, and danner can rebuild them for you too.
The goretex boots hold water in pretty well, when you are paying more attention to the grizzly you just saw, than to where you are putting your feet when fishing from the edge of a COLD Alaskan lake. Don't ask me how i know this ;) At least it was not deep, only up to my neck :D but man it takes your breath away!

Joe,
The pronghorns are more of an upland boot. I do a lot of grouse hunting and I see a lot of guys wearing them. I own a pair of Schnees. They are much like the the LL Bean Maine Hutning boot. Except they are are more "boot like". Excellent boots. The heel is way more aggressive than the beans ever were. I also owned a pair of thier pac boots at one time. Also a good boot.
-
Danner Santiam is the best boot I've ever owned. Every step I take in them makes me glad I paid the extra bucks.
-
danners are one of the best. i've got them too.
-
Hey Joe! Sorry you don't like your new boots. What you need for the "spin-balance-grab" routine might be a pair of ballet shoes.... Remember the home made bacon bamboo always has with him? Maybe he greased up your soles... ... Whatever...
... mike ... :D ...
PS I Love My Danner Boots
-
I agree Danners are the most comfortable boot I have owned. However, all four pairs have leaked within a year. Danner replaced three pair and then informed me they would replace anymore. I suspect all were made in China. The last two pairs were. I would only consider them if they were made in the States but, I can't find anyone who sells them.
-
should of said would not replace
