I sat what I call the beaver tree stand tonight. I wish I had did a drag rag. I have been dragging quite a bit the last week and tonight did not do one. It was 4pm. and I look up and here he comes along the creek. He starts to head uphill at 80 yards and I grunt to him. He turns and heads my way. I get up and ready and he hits where I walked in(drag rag would of been nice)he pauses and continues on and grunts every step. He hit one opening at 30 yards but got thru it before I could stop him. He hung around and made a scrape and worked a branch and slowly filtered away. I grunted a few times and he would turn and look just not come and the can did not work either. I have hunted very hard(missed 2 days all season) and have passed several small bucks, I feel honored just to been this close to him and 3 other 120" bucks this year. Where I hunt a 110" buck is a real trophy. I will be up and at it again inthe morning. By the way Damon had a good one at 30 yards tonight also! Shawn
Sweet Shawn  I sure hope you can get him closer so you get a chance for a good shot. Good luck with him, hope your dedication pays off for you.
Sounds like a great day and a good hunt.
I feel your pain. I mmmmmmisssed a 150"ish buck yesterday for the send time this year.........I missed the same buck one month ago to the day. But tonight I think I figured out the reason...........I had the largest buck I have ever seen while hunting running a doe in the field behind me. A clean 6x6 around 180"........maybe I missed for a reason!
Matt
Good luck, definlety out of my range, thier might be a better oprtunity tomorow.
Flntknp17 do you need some help.HA HA
I can hit well enough at 30 for a shot, but he just walked through an opening and did not stop, I made a half hearted effort at stopping him as he was about eye level with me at the time. Great deer and it helped to keep me motivated. Shawn
Shawn; try one of the snort/wheeze calls, they really do work. Ask Hammond,he`ll tell ya.
Keep at him Shawn...soft doe bleats...soft grunts.
Just being near the bigs ones is a heart pounding event. Hope you get to tie your tag to him Shawn.
Shawn, maybe he is so big he just looked closer...he might have been 40 yards, LOL!
Good luck!
Awesome bud,hope you get him!
If I ever get some time off let's get together....
Keep the faith Shawn .Think positive. You'll get him.
I sat until 10:30 this morning, I climbed down and a lone doe came by as I was packing my clothes.(I dress at my stand) I go in in just my long undies and boots. I bleated and ruffled the leaves and she came right in, she just stood on the other side of the creek looking and slowly fed off. I waited another 1/2 hour to se if anything was trailing her, no go. I have not seen many deer all season, but some real good ones. I heard this am. that a guy killed a big non-typical about 200 yards form my property yesterday evening. I am heading out again at 1pm. and sitting until dark. The bucks are moving and I am gonna be there for sure. Shawn

Geez what do you do when it's warm?...nevermind :knothead:
Mickey, I walk in in my underwear and boots early season. I sweat like a pig if I get warm and that creates scent and I am very careful of my scent. I do get some funny looks walking down the road in my camo undies and high rubber boots but who cares. Shawn
Ya ever had anyone drive off the road :bigsmyl:
Go to your stand naked...thats truly traditional. :archer:
Shawn, you could be guilty of Lewd Conduct in your early season attire. But if its camo I guess you could jump in the ditch and the troopers wont see you.Your not alone though, thats how I used to retrieve my early season ducks when I hunted them hard.
Hey I second that snort wheeze BTW. I mostly use a grunt call, but when I cannot close the deal with that -- a snort wheeze grabs their attention often.
If you haven't tried it, your missing a good tool.
I use my mouth. I didn't buy a call.
Good luck.
Problem is he was 30 yards and on a hillside so about eye level with me for 5-7 minutes. Just too close for that type of call, maybe at 100 yards but 30, no way. i have hunted a long time and have called in a killed a few good ones and I know when i could be busted and this was one of those times. I went back to work today, I work for the town I hunt in and I saw 6 bucks between 9 and 1 today from the truck, guess what? One was the same buck and he was nly 100 yards form where I saw him Sat. Guess where I will be come Weds. morning?(AH home sick in bed) :bigsmyl: Yeah!! Shawn
Shawn,
If you don't mind would you describe your method/technique for doing a "drag rag" as you mentioned in your initial post.

It sounds like that bucks time is limited! Good luck Shawn.
By the way, I thought that vest in your avatar looked familiar. Its the same one I wear for the town I work for.
I take a piece of new sock and spray it with Scent-Killer and a 72" boot lace and spray that as well. I let them dry and than using rubber gloves place in a zip-loc bag with my favorite scent. I usually have urine from a doe I have shot and collect from her bladder, if not I use Code Blue. Than when I am to my walk in point I remove the stuff from the bag and wearing rubber gloves drag the sock on my way to my stand. I usually walk by my stand a ways and than return and throw the whole she-bang high as i can in a tree within 15 yards of my stand where a good shot presents itself. I freshen the rag every hundred yards on my way in to my stand. I have shot several decent bucks this way over the years. David, I may not answer as the loud ringing will hurt my aching head, I am sure! :knothead: I would hope it is limited, but a bud of mine spotted what sounds like the same deer this evening about 1 mile from there! We will see!! shawn
:biglaugh: Good luck Shawn......
David
I should say I do not tie my drag rag to my boot as a lot of guys as it spreads the scent to my other clothing and I am a scent freak, meaning i like to stay as scent free as possible. shawn
Thanks Shawn, I always like hear how others do things...again, I just learned a little something different and I appreciate that.
Hope you get that buck tomorrow!!
Shawn, I'm having a tough time finding Guru's (Curt's) phone number. My son killed a buck he wants mounted. Send me his number or have him call me at 317-292-6818. Thanks Terry
