Title: deer hooves
Post by: bluegill on November 16, 2007, 11:49:00 AM
Hello Gang,

Has anyone used deer hooves as bow tip overlays? I was thinking on trying it but am unsure how to go about popping off the hoof. If any bowyers have done it I would appreciate any information you could provide.

Thanks Sean

Brent Rudolph at Black Mountain can do it. You may want to shoot him an e-mail.

You can soak in almost boiling hot water for 5 minutes and they will pop right off. I've made rattles out of them but not used them for overlays.  They really, really stink when you grind them.

Thanks for the replies I'll give it a try today.

John I have that stave I got off of you down to the lines and about ready for a long string, so far so good.

I have used both Boar as well as Moose hooves for overlays, both are very easy to do, hard to explain.
Just take the plunge and try, PM me and I will try and explain better than this.
Regards, bert.
