There are some days while in the stand that the deer are moving and you wish you hadn't drank that last cup of coffee. What do you do, pee from your tree, or pack up and leave to relieve your self? Just wondering, does human urin alarm deer? :coffee:
I have had the same question. I figure when I get to dancing not only is not too safe, it would probably attract more negative publicity than the pee. i have had a doe come and smell where I just peed below a tree one time.
Go ahead and pee. In my opinion the deer don't mind at all. One of my hunting buddies has a weak bladder so he has to go all the time, and we have seen no ill effects.
I completely emptied my bladder into a scrape located at the corner of a field / woodlot stand a couple nights ago. When I returned a couple days later, it had been worked over VERY well.
I don't think it really matters.
ChuckC
Third option would be to bring a urine bottle or a "spare bladder". I have also let fly from the stand and then had deer under me within a half hour.
Just don't hit your steps or climbing rope. :knothead:
They use to sell some sort of "spare bladder" type container especially for urine. Does anyone know if they still do and who sells it?
Pee, I have seen no ill effect on the deer. Shawn
I had a doe give me a great broadside shot two nights ago when she stopped to smell mine about 6 yards from me she just went about her business after. It was really to bad it's buck only right now.
That is one of the sickest things that I have seen in the woods in recent times are those bladder bags. I went to a bear camp this spring and in the bait sites you see those stinken bags hanging in the trees were guys would wing them from their stands. Just get down the do your business. I've had bucks turn places that I have relieved myself into scrapes. Didn't seem to bother them.
And if you have to go from your stand.... definately steer clear of the steps LOL :scared: :scared: dino
two days ago i was hunting with a buddy we stoped to bleat a couple times while i took a leak. i zipped up looked around we got up looked around some more talked a little then took one step and 20 yads away was a spike and another deer off to the side they were still coming in down wind
Foxbo, I have seen them in Gander mountain, cabelas...might be worth doing a search online.
I just carry an empty water bottle in my fanny pack.
Don't "pee" in a bottle :scared: . Containing the bacteria will start breaking down and producing waste thus giving it the ammonia smell. Took 2 leaks on stand this morning and had a 7 pointer and 4 pointer under me most of the morning. Just let it flow  !
i asked this question 2 years ago on here. i had for years peed in a bottle and was suprised when i asked the question all most everyone said that deer can not tell one urine from another. i am very stubburn in breaking habits that work for me as i allways had used the bottle but it really is a pain in the ass to use 1 as i go around 6-7 times a hunt, week bladder. after i posted and got all the responses i thought i would give it a shot and see what happens. let me tell ya i was floored with the results i have had over this 2 year experiment! i have not had a deer spoke yet ( that i know of ) becouse of peeing from my stand. i have had deer pop out and walk right by it right after i went. none yet ( that i saw ) spooked. many stopped and sniffed and many spooked becouse they winded me but the urine did not affect them. go ahead and try it yourself i think you will be suprised. by the way i am a DIE HARD coffee drinker and drink a lot of it. the coffee smell does not seem to affect them either which suprised me as i could smell it myself. this is just my findings from what i have done, hopefully more people will chime in as i would like to hear what they think or what they have tried.
One time I urinated right out of my tree onto a doe. She didn't seem to mind, just thought it was raining I guess... HAHA totally kidding gentlemen. But I have relieved myself only a few feet from where I was sitting and they didn't seem to mind, I think it soaks in pretty quick.
I just let it fly. Deer don't seem to mind.
Let it flow.....Let it flow.....Let it flow.....
I did a search on here last week about this topic. I was amazed at the number of people who say let it flow. I did.
Last Sat. I whizzed in every scape around my stand (4) and once off the end of my platform. I saw 9 deer. None of them showed any sign of alarm and I could have shot several of them if I wanted.
A doe left all her sign in one of the scapes I "visited".
I had one group of does act a little funny but I think they smelled where I was walking around the stand prior to setting up my climber. That being said one of those does is the one that touched up the scape.
I say let it flow.
Its too fun to pee from a tree, especially at 20 or so feet! Let er fly!
WEEEEE!
B
MX-Don't get those bottles mixed up. Hap
let it fly. Especially into the near by scrapes. ;)
I have to agree with everyone else. Let it fly.
I never really liked the idea of pissin in a bottle anyhow. To easy to get it all over yerself. especially when it's cold out. Hehehe
I'm a BIG coffe drinker myself but since coffee is a diaretic I switch to hot tea during the hunting season. No more frequent wizzing problems. At least for me.

Holy Crap, 6 yards is 18 feet, thats a heck of a stream from the stand. About 10 feet is all I can reach.
Hap,
You beat me to it. If you do mix them up you'll only do it once.
Urine is used to communicate in the animal world, human urine makes deer curious and almost all of them will stop and check it out. I did some experimenting with scents for fox trapping years ago, two very effective scents for catching fox were human urine and old spice after shave, no kidding! So let er fly!
When the leaves are dry a heavy stream can make quite a bit of noise from up a tree. I'll let it go so it sounds like morse code, or a squirrel moving around.
It really works well on scraps. I try to pee in every one I find and they are almost always twice the size in a day or two.
you will never convince me that peeing on the ground leaves less scent than peeing in a bottle and capping it off, i'm sorry, i'm not buying it.
I carry 2 large zip lock freezer bags. In an emergency, I use one bag, then zip it up inside the second bag to be on the safe side. Dispose of after the hunt. Knock on wood, I'm still able to hold out for several hours & don't have to use the bags very often.
I never used to but this year I pee'd from the tree and saw deer shortly thereafter. Given all I've read and my personal experience I don't think it makes that much difference.
I do agreee that urine left in a bottle will become much more odorous then that left on the ground.
Peeing in a bottle.
I have a lawn care business and do mostly weed and feed applications. During the day when working I find the need to relieve myself. I can't do it on a customers lawn and I can't take the time to run to a public restroom. So, i usually slip into the enclosed trailer I'm pulling and pee into a bottle. It doesn't take long for the amonia to build up and by the end of the day it's pretty rank.
If your gonna sit in a stand all day and use that bottle more than once, you've created your own stink bomb.
The old time hot water bottles work well if you choose to contain it.
peeing in zip lock bags?? sounds like hand and coat warmers to me :biglaugh:
Randy it does not leave less scent, it just does not spook deer. They do not associate the smell with humans, so it is not alarming to them. Shawn
Every animal in the woods uses its urine to identify itself and mark its territory. Maybe human urine spooks deer, maybe it doesn't. But it doesn't belong there and knowing how every other animal uses its whiz, I ain't about to join in.
Maybe does and young bucks react with curiosity or sexual aggression. But a big old buck ain't the same critter.
As far as using a container. Use a metal or glass container with a good seal. Clean it out after every hunt. The only time any smell will escape is when you use it and that vapor will dissipate quickly in the air. Not peeing on the ground is too easily accomplished to risk it.
You think your pee under your stand might not hurt anything. Perhaps. I know the lack of pee under my stand won't hurt anything.

I can't argue with a big buck being whole different animal. Now you got me rethinking the whole thing again.
Many years ago there was a study published in the American Rifleman that said male human urine many times attracts bucks to a scrape. Female human urine, though, did not have the same effect. I've watered the woods in a ravine only to look up while fastening the pants to have a group of does standing only feet from me on top of the ditch and not have a worry.
As always, it depends. Some deer don't care at all. Some care a whole lot.
If a deer has been shot at by a guy that smells like coffee pee, and you pee from your stand after drinking half a pot, I bet that deer will care a lot. If a deer lives on a farm where lots of workers are peeing in the woods all the time and not shooting at him, then he probably won't care much.
Deer aren't necessarily smart but they sure do remember well.
I don't take killing deer so seriously as to worry about it anymore but when I did, I sure didn't take the chance. Plus it's fun to pee from a stand. Especially when there's snow on the ground :)
All of this happened on the last day of a hunting trip where I was hunting in a stand from dark to dark.
I used to pee in a empty water bottle all the time until I had one leak (pun intended). I filled a bottle with pee the previous night and forgot to take it out of my pack. I noticed it the next morning when I got to my stand height in a tree with my climber. I climbed back down, pulled the bottle out and covered it with oak leaves. I then crushed oak leaves all over my pack. Then I sprayed everything with no scent. I then climbed up and as I was about to pull my bow up, and noticied a Booner ten feet from my stand. I froze, and he walked right under my stand and then walked off.
I did end up taking a beautiful deer that morning but not a booner. Neither deer spooked on the urine scent.
I just go when I have to go now and don't worry about it.
Hey Vaughn, I sure do piss alot. Might as well hit those scrapes when ya can. :bigsmyl:
My wife gave me one of those pee containers used in hospitals to try out this year. I have had it on every trip and finally had a use for it.
Used it and then put it back in my backpack. I thought it was spill proof. It leaked into everything in my pack and I could smell it up in my tree. Took a small buck shortly after. Then had to go hom and clean everything. :banghead:
I pee on the spot now.
I just use scent loc, piss all over my self enjoy the warmth and forget the wind, just hunt.Just kidden!I usually walk down wind and pee.And I believe if a mature buck is down wind of you he will smell you. pee or no pee.We are carnivores and I don't doubt that animals just view human pee as any other pee.Pee doesn't signal immediate danger.Scent from an existing predetor will present a problem.
aim high and let'er fly

LMAOF!!!
Peeing definitely gives off more scent but not scent that they mind. I pee in scrapes too and later find them all ripped up anew. I don't know if it attracts them more but it certainly doesn't keep them away.
Just pee from the tree. Urine is urine! I have peed from the tree for years. I have had deer lick the urine (for the salt) countless times.
My hunting partner, Tom Storm, and I treated 12 scrapes with Wall Hanger scent and 12 we peed in. Guess what...we had the same number of hits in both types of treated scrapes.
Don't screw around with pee bottles, just go for it!
Too Short
If it's gotta get out, I let it out.
Let me tell ya... it's not just taking a leak that deer don't mind. I was once in a very compromised position and had an inquisitive doe come up to within 3 feet -had to finally shoo her away.
All right, I'm back to peeing. I see enough affirmations.
I'm hunting "street smart bucks" anyway, so Brunners endorsement works for me.
Well lets see. Where I hunt, there is tons of wildlife - presumably peeing all over the place, horses (and their riders) peeing here and there, hikers peeing whenever the urge strikes, campers and their pets who certainly pee in the bushes because that bathroom is just too dang many steps away, other hunters peeing this way and that and the odd passerby who will choose to pee.
Some times, I get the impression that deer get to a patch of ground that's not urine-soaked and get fairly suspicious. Needless to say, I give in to the pressure (so to speak) and pee as well.
It is like guys saying that ya should not gut a deer near your stand. I always gut them where they fall and some have fallen right under my stands, guess what? I have shot a nice buck or two in or very near my fresh gut-piles. It has been proven in many studies that it does not spook deer even mature bucks. I have yet to see a study that says it spooks deer. Shawn
Next question??? To doo or not to doo? Cause when you gotta go....
Dunno about dropping a deuce out there (though I've done it) but for heaven's sake bury the evidence!
I don't mind (much) stumbling across other hunters when I'm out, but there are some things I really *don't* want to stumble across. >:-(
Apparently, millions of dollars are being wasted on buying deer urine attractants! :o )
OH, you got me started! Most of the so-called Doe in heat urine is NOT deer urine. It is, if the seller is concerned with false advertising suits, RABBIT urine. A female rabbit is a "Doe".
Tink screwed people over like this for years...
If all the "deer urine" that was sold came from deer, there would have to be over 500,000 captive deer, all wearing pee pee tubes!
It is just ANOTHER Madison Avenue RIP OFF!
I don't use scents anymore at all! If I do anything, it will be intentionally peeing in a key scrape! I have seen big, mature bucks RIP a scrape to shreds after I peed in it...no josh!
Too Short
Hey Paul hows a guy that goes by too short, keep from getting pee on himself doing it from a treestand? Love Ya....Preston
I don't know...you guys can hunt like you want...But for me,I'm peeing in a bottle. I use a well constructed, thick plastic bottle that absolutely doesn't leak.I clean it after every use and also put my used tissues in it. I usually find myself with a runny nose when the weather gets cold.
When I'm hunting I like to keep my "impact" on the area as small as possible. That just makes sense to me. Espacially when dealing with mature animals. They're a whole diff. breed!
How do you guys that "get out and go downwind" know you're not spooking deer walking around? And how do you know that peeing all over the place over time won't deter deer movement form the area?
I don't know...maybe I just give the critters too much credit...but it works for me.....
It all comes down to confidence....either way if your confident that you're doing the right thing, then by all means continue....
Pee outta my stand ALWAYS.
Here is the key thought to all of this...
URINE IS URINE!!!!!
Tissues???? Heck, I just lean out and close one nostril off and let 'er rip! NEVER had a problem. I have dribbled saliva right on a deer's nose QUITE A FEW TIMES and watched them lick it off and do NOTHING!
A friend chews and spits his chew out of the stand. The deer EAT IT!
I think we have been pounded to death BY PEOPLE WHO SELL THINGS to believe that we must buy this, buy that, do this, do that, etc. MOST of it is just pure hawg wash! I mean, look at this whole insane Scent Lok suit business...open Cabela's catalog. Scent Lok will NOT keep animals from smelling you!!!!! READ MY LIPS! Talk to African outfitters about it...they laugh at it! Okay, so it may...MAY...cut your scent down a LITTLE, but it is just another crutch that is made of rubber!
Too Short
Just be sure to drop Trou first. No fun sitting in it..... Ha Ha!!!! Never seemed to bother the deer round my part. Jason
For years I went in a bottle and my buddy who's a biologist -- and bow hunter, used to tell me that's worse than letting er' rip. He said once oxygen hits it, deer can't tell it from anything else. However, as stated earlier, the bacteria and amonia build up is like a flag.
So about 8 years ago, I decided to try going whereever I was. I have not seen ANY negative impact that I can tell. However, I've even went on a down tree below me once and had two bucks and a doe feeding on it. And I always go in a scrape.
I guess it's ok.
If you wanna keep your "impact"on the area as small as possible ,pee straight down, don't arc it!!

I too used to chew ,spit all the time out of the stand . I've had bucks walk right in it within minutes
 :knothead:
I KNOW that peeing in a bottle wont spook deer, not so sure peeing on the ground multiple times, wont.If ya hunt the same stand a few times, its gonna leave some scent, wether the deer spook is something I am not willing to gamble, I try very hard to have no impact or at least as little as possible.. to me this is going against that. I use a small gator aide bottle I wash it out after every hunt, and have been using it to long to change.
"However, as stated earlier, the bacteria and amonia build up is like a flag."
Bacteria and amonia will build up if deposited into a bottle, but it won't do the same thing on the leaves?
Dogs, foxes, etc., all leave sign posts in the woods with nothing but their urine. Why would human urine not do the very same thing under your stand?
had to pee yesterday afternoon got down went about 50 yds. from my stand, less than 1 hour latter a for for sure 150 class buck walked less than 20 from the pee downwind never even looked that way i have seen the same thing before. IMO it doed not hury a thing. doug77

i think , the microorgansims in the soil break down the bacteria in the urine , whereas in the bottle it can't be broken down. therfore you get the heavy amonia smell.
at least that's what i'm telling myself.
If you pee in a bottle, don't confuse that bottle with the one with tea in it.
I've never had a deer spook at human urine smell, and I don't carry bottles for such things.
Buy those bottles if you want to....the economy relies on such things. :saywhat:
I've had bucks and does come in to my pee (took my first buck that way).
Had a big buck stop 30 yards downwind this year to challenge me after smelling my 45 minute old pee.
Had a doe come in within 2 minutes of me peeing..she was upwind so she must have heard it. She took a few wifs and went snorting off!
In general it works for me and I will keep doing it.

I READ AN ARTICAL THE ARTICALESAID DEER CANNOT TELL THE DIFFERANCE FROM HUMAN URINE THAN FROM A FOX OR BEAR COYOTE JUST THAT URINE WAS FROM A MEAT EATER.
To those of you who are afraid to listen to reason and still screw around with a pee bottle, I issue this challange (a MILD challange).
PEE OUT OF YOUR STAND A FEW TIMES AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS!
One great thing for a guy 64 years old...when I pee from the stand I can still pee 15 feet like I did when I was a kid! Heck of an ego builder!
Heh, heh, heh!
Too F. Short
Hey Too Short, when you measure feet using your own 8th dwarf feet as the measuring instrument it really converts to about 5 or 6 feet in real person distance!!! :D Sorry Paul, I just couldn't resist that!
Have you been watching me peeing from my tree stand, bohuntr?

I go right in a scrape when setting out trail cams it attracts and doesn't repel deer. I think you would find that shaving lotion, smoking, gasoline, fuel oil etc all would have no effect on repelling deer.
All this talk about pee! I used to carry bottles with me to pee in but then I thought about how Indian tribes lived and hunted and then about how the early settlers must have hunted. They didn't have a choice! They went when and where they had too!
I got back into traditional archery to simplify things and to make my surroundings more enjoyable. One way to simplify is to not worry about carrying an empty bottle to pee in! :)

George Stout "If you pee in a bottle, don't confuse that bottle with the one with tea in it."
I have a couple of perament ground blinds that I hunt out of. I have to carry a pee bottle when I hunt in these. Since it is Texas and it is 95 degrees in there from Oct till Dec. I have to carry water also.
It is hard to tell the difference from the yellow bottle and the clear bottle in the dark.
Always remember "the water is on your right side the pee is on the left."
Always remember "the water is on your right side the pee is on the left."
Always remember "the water is on your right side the pee is on the left."
Always remember "the water is on your right side the pee is on the left."
Or was it the other way?
I don't believe it is an issue either. Like somebody else above, I recall an article about urine from somewhere a few years ago that got fairly scientific about what is in urine and how it is percieved by critters. If I recall correctly, the important stuff like doe estrus doesn't last much over an hour or so before it is gone. I believe the consensus was that deer may be able to tell human urine from animal urine based on your diet but only for a short time. Like somebody else said, meat eaters uirine smells different (supposedly) than herbivore urine but again, only for a while. Even so, there are a LOT of meat eaters running around the woods. Coyotes, bobcats, dogs, even coons, opossums etc. Never heard of a deer spooking from there urine. If they did, they'd NEVER have a moments peace.
I even pee when I'm hunting from my double bull ground blind but I have one little trick for that situation. I carry a cheap metal or plastic garden trowel that my wife uses to plant flowers in the spring around the house. Simply dig out a single scoop of dirt like a plug. Going full depth of the trowel gives me about a 6 inch deep hole. I pee in the hole, let it dissapate into the ground and drop the plug of dirt back down and pack it a little to seal it up.
I've done this multiple times in a day and still had deer come in and not spook. One even bedded down within 20 yards. The true test though was when I took the blind down then set it up again a day or two later and still had deer using the area like I'd never been there.
I get busted every time I pee out of the tree. Not sure if it is the medication I take, or just a different body odor from others. I know lots of my buddies just let it fly, If I do, the deer will spook every time.
i pee before and after ,no in between.
Gene,
how long to you sit???? 5 hors of stand sitting and i go about 5 times. now way could i hold it, would be very uncomfortable.
I like letting it fly from 20-25 feet up and write my name in the snow. :bigsmyl:
I remember reading in one of the Wensel's books (I think it was "....and the Horse You Rode in ON") where they recommended putting crushed-up Alka Seltzer in your buddy's pee bottle...we attempted this trick in deer camp one year.....never got a reaction out of the victim....
I do dig a hole in my Double Bull blind. The only reason I do is to keep from smelling the pee all day in the heat.
U-DIG-IT shovel. Just google it. It is tiny, with a folding handle, and will even fit in a cargo pocket. It is good steel and you can dig a hole in no time with it and just back fill it.
I take it with me all the time, unless I'm in a tree stand.

Well I'll be darn...I've got something in common with the little guy...no not the pee in the blind, the shovel...I have one of the U-DIG-IT shovels and I love it.
As for the question of the thread, I firmly believe....I'll be back, I gotta go to the little boy's room.......
I let it flow. I've had deer come right under my tree and check out my "scent" and it didn't bother them a bit. Last year I wizzed on a tree that was 50yds from my stand. I watched a VERY nice buck walk up to it, sniff, and make a scrape right there. BTW I'll sell my own "special brand" for $30 a bottle! LOL!!!! :biglaugh: :biglaugh:
Wensel and I knew I guy named Tim Fox... You guessed it! Wensel was going to get rich bottling his pee! Tim didn't seem to like the idea all that much.

...and I thought that was one of my Granny's originals!
I must've done something wrong. I read this thread before going on my last hunt and with the overwhelming "let it fly" responses I figured I'd give it a try. At 0930 when I just couldn't hold it any longer and wanted to stay in the stand another hour or so I let 'er rip. Same thing the next morning. Between the second morning and evening hunt I relocated my stand to the other side of the field, about 100 yds between locations. That evening I had two deer spook, full on blowing and stomping, from the down-wind side of the "pee stand". Prior to my initial "christening" I had deer down-wind of the stand with me in it with no problem.
I know this is only one experience but I'm gonna keep bringing a bottle with me.
uh oh, now Killys already po'd cause she can't find her journal and now ya done drew a line in the sand!
I believe this one has been discussed from every relevant angle and quite a few not so relevant.
