Title: Need recurve recommendations
Post by: cajuntec on November 14, 2007, 09:37:00 PM
I currently own three traditional bows - a custom longbow (60"), a old Bear Kodiak Hunter (60"), and a Hoyt Gamemaster (62").  Through shooting all three, I have determined what I like in each of them.

Longbow - the "locator" grip (thats what the bowyer called it that made it for me), the length, the dark woods, and the ultra light (physical) weight.

Bear - the length, and the light (physical) weight.  The riser seems too "wide" if that makes sense.

Gamemaster - the added 2" length doesn't bother me at all, and the poundage of that bow is pretty much dead on what I would like - approx 48#'s at 27".

So... now I'm looking to get a "perfect" (for me) recurve.

I'm looking for a quiet, hard hitting hunting bow, light physical weight, darker woods (bubinga, purple heart, black walnut are my favorites), 60" to 62" length, approx 48-50#'s at 27", and if at all possible... that "locator" grip like my longbow.

Anyone know of anything that you would recommend?

I know people get attached to "their" bow, but I really want an honest "hey take a look at ....", even if it isn't what you currently shoot.

Thanks in advance,
All the best,
Glenn

Glenn:
The best advise I can give your is to get on the internet and look at every bow you can find, select the ones that catch your eye (if you don't like their looks it does not matter how they perform, you won't be happy). Then begin your search from a price angle, select a group that fall into your price range. then just slowly eliminate them until you have three or four, then narrow them to you final selection from reports of others.

Roy Hall of Navajo Bows makes an Apache longbow that I think is worth considering.

The grip is great, and it is a real shooter.

I like mine.  Custom made for about $600.

Any 50's style recurve should fit the bill.  It's what I shoot and my absolute favorite.  I shoot a Great Northern Ghost with index grip.

Thanks for all the advice everyone!  I greatly appreciate it.

Bob (aromakr) - as always, good advice.  Unfortunately, I have searched over several websites and not found what I am looking for.  Having a model name / number helps, as proved by Dakota Kid.  I had reviewed Black Widow's site several times and for some reason, never stopped to admire the PSR - which looks to be what I am looking for.  But the price - Wow!  Guess if it's worth it though...

Dakota Kid - Thanks!

Basic Instinct - Thank you very much.  Not quite what I had in mind.  I'm looking for a recurve with a longbow grip - that is the reverse - a longbow with a recurve grip.  Thanks anyway!  I appreciate you taking the time to respond and help out.

Whitetail Chaser - Thank you very much as well... but I am looking for a recurve, not a longbow.  Sorry for any confusion.  I know I'm asking for something that isn't the "norm".  Thanks!

j yenney - You may have nailed it!  That looks to be exactly what I am looking for!  I just need to figure out what wood I would like, especially for the limbs.  I want something dark, and they list a lot of what I would (think) are light colored woods.  Maybe a laminate over them?

String Cutter - nice looking bows, but it's hard to tell what the side view looks like from that picture on their site.  If it's like the 58" Kurve underneath the top picture, that almost resembles the Bear riser I have, which I am trying to avoid.  I'll contact them for a better pic.  Thanks!

Apex Predator - That's what I am finding, although I was not aware it was a "50's style" before you said it.  Now I have a name to go with what I am looking for.  Thanks!

Once again, thank you all very much for the replies.  I am gaining ground in my search!
All the best,
Glenn

BTW... I'll be selling off the Bear and Hoyt when I finally settle on my new recurve. (keeping the longbow forever)   :D

I'm not sure it's exactly what you want, but to me, Wes Wallace makes the best shooting recurves out there, and I've owned just about every good one there is!  They don't look too shabby, either.  Good luck, Paul.

Take a look at the Checkmate Atilla at recurves.com. Lot of bow for the money and long list of woods.

An impressive bow I shoot this summer, is a Big River Recurve...
The gentleman is a retired gentleman that lives in wisconsin and does beautiful work.

60" Recurve, bamboo cores, your choice of woods he has: very reasonable..

I shot a 46lb all Tulip Wood that was beautiful..

Cajuntec,

Sounds to me you are looking for a recurve with a longbow grip or handle. Also called locater grip. Some of the bows of this type are labled 50's style recurves. I also like the locater grip because of the large site window.

Fox Breed and 2 others mentioned (Kota Kill-um & Kohannah Kurve)above have those quilaties. And there are a bunch more. I own the Breed. Very nice bow.

Start looking at the web sites.  :)

Have fun,

Rich K

As you can see, there will be no consensus.  If you can hold-off for awhile, attend ETAR at Denton Hill and try a dozen or so bows.  Nothing works better than shooting the bows before buying.

Nice... but too heavy for me.  That is 61# at 28", so it would probably be about 58/59 at my 27".  Thats about 8-10lbs heavier than what I am looking for.  Thanks anyway.  I appreciate it.  Looks like it did sell to someone else though.
All the best,
Glenn

Cajun,

Go to Robertson Stykbow and check out their bows in stock.  If they have a Peregrine that fits your specs, I'd recommend having them send it to you for demo.  Only cost you shipping to try it and you can keep it if you like it (but that'll cost a little more) and they are great shooters -Dick Robertson builds some of the best shooting bows around!  Good luck, Greg

Check out a Fedora 60" 560 recurve. He can make it any combination of woods that you want and he puts a locator grip on all of his bows. they are fast and smooth to draw. He made one of these for the Maryland Bowhunters Society banquet two years ago and everyone who shot it loved it. The guy who won it at auction couldn't stop smiling.
