Title: how many are short draw?
Post by: pacopperhead on December 26, 2008, 11:05:00 AM
im new to the site and reading everything i can about trad.i want to convert from a compound over to a longbow and i draw 27'' on a compound.

im pretty sure u lose 2'' of draw when u go to trad

that would make me a 25''draw,i havent seen anybody post yet w/ that short of draw and i been reading alot

i'd like to read what some of you short drawers use for equipment.bows arrows etc

Most of the trad bows are rated at 28" then add 2 or 3 lbs after. (i.e 50lbs @ 28") I'm unsure if the opposite is true, take away 2 to 3 lbs per inch.
I stayed the same as the compound (31") after I got the 12 and 6 T position on form, but my anchor point changed.
If you're just starting look at around 45 to 50 lbs at your draw length.

I'm using a Striker recurve 53# @ 25" with a 560 grain CX 150. I've shot 2 and 4 blade Stingers and 4 blade Phantoms. Not very fast at my draw but whisper quiet and have had no problem killing deer.(4-29yds)  I will look to go up around 10#'s for elk and moose.  Joe

I think that is too much.  I would go no more than 40, and preferably 35 or so.

pacopperhead,
Your 27" draw with a compound is that with a release and a string loop? if so, you won't lose that much draw length. I draw 27 3/4" with a compound and 27" even with a recurve.
Good luck
Daren

That string loop will cost you about an inch in true draw length. So actually, you probably have a 28" draw length w/compound which is what I had. I have around 26 1/2" with my longbow, which I'll bet that's very close to what you'll have.

I draw 28.5 compound and 26" trad so 25" for you sounds right thats just the way it is ,have had many compound shooters think they draw the same with trad gear but in truth they dont its a diffrent game

Scott when i shot a compound i had a 28" draw (that however may not have been the correct draw for me)but i shot it comfortably.
when i went to trad i prob lost about 2" but now i have lurnt proper form and alignment, the way Terry Green likes it, i have a 28 1/2" draw.

Paul Brunner i believe used to shoot Schafer silvertips and Morrisons but he was pulling a good draw Weight, high 60's low 70's i think.

With a compound, release and string loop I draw 31.5". With a longbow I draw 31.5".

First and foremost, go into a shop and have your draw length measured so you know for certain what you are dealing with...but So what if you lose a couple of inches?

I just posted this on another thread but always worth repeating.  Draw length has nothing to do with accuracy and accuracy is what archery is all about.  You can always speed or penetration compensate with different limbs, arrows or bow weights.

Too many people worry about what looks good (corner of the mouth etc) and worry about getting consistency.  If you want to see how shorter draw lengths can be accurate, just look at the Olympic archers, when they use the string on nose tip, for what I mean.

Proper back tension is far more important and with the right form, your DL will/should increase.

Good point Brad.  I draw my Olympic recuves 30.25".  I draw 31" w/longbow.  The more I have shot, the longer I get.  I used to only draw 30" w/compounds.

I too suffer from a short draw length syndrome...I've had two custom bows built for me, Silver Tip recurve and a Critter Gitter II Grt Northrn longbow. I shoot em ok but I feel I had them built with too short of a draw length...how do I tell and what is the correct traditional measurement technique? Thanks

Howzit pacopperhead,

I no tink that I have short draw syndrom. I like to call myself vertically challenged instead!

My draw length is pretty short 44lbs@26 out of my Great Plains SR recurve. It's also a short bow at 56". I find that "for me" its the perfect length as I do all of my hunting spot and stalk here in Hawaii. The bow is a little on the heavy side with phenolic built into the riser and limbs. (For Me),I believe it is a good thing--- as it makes for a more stable bow.

As for arrows, I shoot Gold Tips 35/55's cut to 28.5" with a 100gr. brass inserts. Five inch left wing helical seems to steer da buggas pretty good. Up front I've been using Magnus 125gr heads.

(Accuracy is everything). I always comment to my friends that shoot wheelies, "70 pounds eh? Brah you sure when miss um fast". I've gotten a pass through on a smaller 70lb pig and a few goats. Haven't gotten a pass through on a sheep yet but they also haven't traveled very far. Sad to say however that more animals seem to NOT walk into my arrow's path so I'm glad you didn't ask for shooting tips.

Aloha,

       Mark

I draw about 25.5 and it does make a difference. If you have a longer draw length the limbs will work more and you get more speed. When I bought my palmer recurve Mike told me to get the 58" model and that would offset the problem of a short draw. The bow is pretty fast at 53lbs at my draw length.
