Title: micarta/ phenolic/ ???
Post by: elk ninja on November 13, 2007, 08:03:00 PM
Anyone know where a fella could get a riser block sized piece of micarta?  I'd love some black canvas stock, about 18"x1.5"x2" or so, but can't seem to find it.  Tried Binghams.  No luck, but I didn't call, just looked in the catologue and online.

Madness522:

The micarta gets stronger as you go from paper to linen to canvas.  The flip side is that the "grain" of the micarta gets progressively coarser as you move from paper to canvas.

Depending what you are going for paper has almost a wood grain look but canvas has a very rough look.  You can see the canvas.

hope that helps,

Carl

I believe linen would make the best risers. Bob Lee uses Linen Micarta for his risers and overlays. Shawn

I like the canvas patterns.  I also like that you can polish some of the riser surfaces and leave others "rough"... the idea in my head (and I love wood, that is one quality that drew me to tard archery years ago) is a canvas riser, polished on all the surfaces excpet the saddle of the grip area.... might be ugly as sin, probably will be heavy too.... but we'll see.  thanks for all you input fellas!
