Title: where does your thumb go?
Post by: stickandastring on January 18, 2008, 11:27:00 AM
I shoot split finger, middle to corner of mouth, Im trying to find a solid anchor place for thumb. I have been putting my thumb knuckle at the corner of my jaw but that's a pressure point and after extended shooting that starts to hurt.

any ideas?

Why are you pressing that hard against your jaw?  I fold my thumb down across my palm and don't notice it when I shoot.  I'm not there to watch you but it seems to me that if you are pressing against your face you need to try more back tension and let the back of your hand relax more.  An anchor point is just a reference place to touch.  All tension should be straight back, not sideways.

Personally, I bend the last joint in my thunb slightly (not enough to put tension in it) and let it ride on top of my hand. When I tuck it inside, I find it acting as a "spring" against my face and causing a pluck upon release.

my son anchors his straight up in the groove in front of your ear.  personally mine is tucked under and digs into my cheek

I shoot split finger and anchor my middle fingertip in the corner of my mouth.  I put my thumb on top of my pinky fingernail as I start to mount my bow and drag my thumb along my jaw as I finish my draw.  The first knuckle of my thumb ends up behind my jaw, under my ear.

thanks for the input guys, the behind the ear thing seems to work well. Ive also started holding longer. More aiming and focus on target.

Im off to the outdoor show at the Reading Expo Center.....should be good.
