Is the general rule that the string for a recurve is 4 inches shorter then the bow length and longbow strings are 3 inches shorter than bow length. Is this sizing string groove to groove or tip to tip? This is an old straight limb LB.

If a bow is to AMO standards then it is supposed to be 3" less than the AMO length given on the bow. Actual bow length doesn't give enough info on string length. A string is supposed to bring a bow to proper brace height without twists and a few other things. If a bowyer writes 64" AMO on a bow, then it is supposed to use a 61" actual length string. Problem is a some bowyers don't really know the true AMO standards. The main difference between recurve and longbow strings is loop size.

I have a Martin Hatfield 62 inch. The current string is 58 inches. I painted over the specs so do not know if 62 is AMO. I need a new string for this bow and need the right one.

If it measures 58 then that is what you need. A lot of the older bow manufacturers do the 4" less for recurves, but they aren't true AMO. That's why if you can measure a string you are much better off.
