Title: Anyone Bar their own feathers?
Post by: Robinofdahood on November 11, 2007, 09:04:00 PM
With the cost of barred feathers being twice that of solid colors, I was wondering if anyone has barred their own solid colored feathers and if so, how and with what.  Thanks folks!

tried once with a magic marker- not that good. i think spray paint would work well. just make a template.

I have pretty good success with a sharpie. The trick is to do both sides of the feather after you have fletched the arrow. Not that hard, just get a barred feather and copy the pattern. It may not look as good up close, but from a few feet away, you can hardly tell the difference.

wax the feathers in an opposite of the bar you want before you dip them in dye. then after they set up, wipe them with a soft cloth
Works really well.

I used a brown and a black Sharpie to get some pretty good imitations. Good enough to fool a few people. I usually just do natural barred looks. Haven't tried any bright colors.

Try Minwax stain, apply with a natural sea sponge.
