Title: Glossary of Traditioanl Archery Terms?
Post by: tomh on November 10, 2007, 05:52:00 AM
I am sure I am not the first to ask, but has anyone come up with a thread for glossary of terms?
Maybe something everyone can just add to as they think of it.

gravity swells - reasons your arrows hit high or low.
"which broadhead is best?" : a question asked mostly after bowseason; to create long discussion threads.
"Sweet" : does NOT refer to the taste of a bow; but instead- the way it shoots.
"trophy" : ANY animal taken with a traditional bow.

"creepy" : when your draw length decreases by inches just before a shot.

" You shoot first" : a term used when you want to shoot the others guys arrow.

"deflection"- a missed shot excuse
"it will be good eaten" - what you say when your buddy shoots a small deer
" pass through " a deer walking by and you not ready to shoot
" shooting lanes " -area between the neighbors house and yours used for target practice
" hunt of a lifetime "- what you tell your wife every year when you want to go on an out of state hunt

*quiver*- what your whole body does when a big buck starts to walk within range.
*brace*- what you'll be in eventually if you hunt from treestands without a safety harness.
*aiming*- have intentions to do something. As in, "I am aiming on going hunting this weekend."
*snort wheeze*- the noise your hunting buddy makes after taking a snort of the Moonshine that southern guide offered him.
*grunt tube*- the handle of your deer drag.
*rut*- a prolonged period of inexplicable bad shooting or hunting.

"Archer's Paradox" --- Ground blind or treestand?

"Playing the wind" --- You had a bean & chee burrito before you got in your stand.

"Spine" --- The part of your body, guarenteed to give out as a trophy buck wanders past at 3 yds

"Trophy Buck" --- The inflated size of any deer from a button buck upwards, that you didn't shoot/missed when no-one else was there to see.

"3-under" --- The distance in feet, below the belly, that you missed your 'Trophy Buck'

"Let it walk" --- Missed.

"Passed up the shot" --- Missed by a mile.

"Ground hunter" --- Scared of heights.

"Still hunting" --- A walk in the woods.

"Spot and stalk" --- Seen it a mile away, had a walk over & it was gone.

"Winded" --- Bean & chee revenge, as a deer's walking past

"Chip shot" --- Missed at under 10 yards

"Got Mojo" --- Really old, dirty & probably broken

"Buck fever" --- Cramp/asleep when a deer comes into view

"Good eating size" --- I didn't know they made deer that small!

Rob,
According to your terms, I hope your knife that is on its way doesn't "got Mojo"  :bigsmyl:

I thought I was the only one that ate burritos before hunting.   :D

@#$!! means a miss

"Mojo"  is a term commonly encountered in the African-American folk belief called hoodoo. A mojo is a type of magic charm, often of red flannel cloth and tied with a drawstring, containing botanical, zoological, and/or mineral curios, petition papers, and the like. It is typically worn under clothing.

I couldn't find the glossary. ks_stickbow didn't open for me.  How is brace measured? From string to the back or the belly of the handle?

Usually from the string to the deepest part of the grip.

Funny stuff on here!

"Gross Score": What I estimate the deer's PY score to be and I'm not about to put a tape on the deer to lower my estimate.

15-16': 10-12'

"Effective Range": 5 yards plus how far I shoot in the basement when there's no wind (in the basement).

"Shoots where I look": Some folks scan the target.

"LH Bow":  RH bow on the big auction site.
