Fresh off the the chopping block.
Vine Maple. 66.5 tip to tip . It is a bit lumpy on the back. 56@28. Finished with stain, and 7 coats of danish oil and rubbed down with paste wax. Shoots great.

Additionally, the temp was about 16 degrees. selfbows work fine in the cold.
Thanks.

I was going to do a build along for this one, but it was way more simple to film it all and edit it down into digestible chunks. Nothing is for sale and this video series is as much for my education as everyone else.
Check it out if you like.

 Nice......is your move permanent or just temporary.

A very well made video! Have you considered using a tillering gizmo on your builds? It sure takes the guess work out of where to remove wood.
Super easy to make and they work really well.

Hey Eric. I have used a gizmo before. I like them. I just didn't bring mine on the move.
Ron, The move is permanent for the near future. Hopefully I will have a few good hunting stories in the upcoming years.
have a great day!

I'll miss the goat hunts on the Island, but maybe you will give us a thrill with a hunt for moose or some other critter from the great white north.
-
yeah Ron, There is plenty of goat hunting here too. Just white fluffy ones now.

Beautiful bow!
Excellent video as well.

Nice Bow, Msturm!!! :knothead:
How durable is vine maple for bow wood? I try to shoot every day. Some times for 20 min., sometimes for an hour. Will vine maple hold up to that okay?
Are there more "species" of vine maple than just one, or a certain type of vine maple that makes a better bow than other kinds?

JNewton,
I am no expert on Vine Maple. I just recieved a stave from a guy who was clearing out some over stock from his shed. after I got it I did a bit of research and it seems by most accounts to be a great bow wood and a properly tillered bow will shoot great for a very long time. If you have a bunch of it on your land there is no reason not to make a few bows! It is pretty fun to make them and even more fun to fill the freezer with something you made out of a log. (if you wanna send me a piece I can make a bow out of it and let you know if your Vine Maple is suitable for bow making lol...) Check out Weyland. He is from Oregon and makes quite a few gorgeous Vine Maple bows. If you run a search on Primitive Archer a bunch of them will come up. I believe there is a really detailed build along on the bowers bench section of Tradgang too. BEST OF LUCK!!

Msturm, thats a nice bow! I like vine maple I cut most of mine in Montana, I have kids and grandkids there. If you are living in Homer you should join the Traditional Archer of Alaska ( TAA), we have our big Jay Massey Shoot over Memorial Day weekend every year, Great place to camp for the weekend and a awesome 3D course and great comradery. Come join us, you'll be glad you did!!

Very nice and thanks for sharing it. You are right in that making a stick bow and taking game with it is a special thing.
God bless, Steve

That is an awesome looking self bow Michael. I also enjoyed watching your videos. I have watched Weylin's videos too. He makes some outstanding bows. Thanks for sharing.

Enjoy your new home. Been through Homer once. I bet you have more space to work on bows than your apartment before.
