Hello All,
Well, here be my first topic ever on an archery forum…
Got the ILF bug and want to hear from others with experience…
If you were to assemble a best selection of parts to build your best metal ILF riser bow (recurve or longbow limbs) for hunting deer, what all would you choose and why?
I realize best is different for each individual, and what’s best for you isn’t necessarily best for me or the next person, but I’m looking for everyone’s individual experience at best.
I also realize it might depend on hunting out of tree stands, blinds, etc., so please include that in your reason for best as well.
And sure, the one you already own is your best perhaps, and don’t need to assemble a selection of best parts, so then please use it for your example.
Please include:
riser make/model/length...along with limb alignment and tiller adjustment capabilities
limbs make/model/length
string make, etc.
shelf or arrow rest, etc. used
strikeplate or plunger, etc. used
and please include vibration, quiet, balance characteristics too
THANKS in advance - Don

ILF is a way to attach limbs and a byproduct of that is tunability in the way of being able to adjust draw weight by roughly 10%. Other than that it's pretty much find one you like, pretty much like a bolt down limb bow. If you want fancy, look to the new offerings by Stalker Stick bows, if you want to shoot off a shelf, look to the various wood risers available. If you want to shoot off an elevated rest look at the metal risers. Buy a Hoyt Satori riser and you can shoot off the shelf or an elevated riser. These are no different than any other bow, know what you like, what fits you, what feels good to you and what fits your price point and go from there!

I bounce back and forth between a Wes Wallace Mentor and this Titan III riser with medium Samick BF Extreme limbs. Trap feather rest, DDD sideplate (not pictured), 12 strand D97 string of my own making with homemade woolies. Stock grip has been replaced with a Jager Med. Best 2.0. Bow is 62" L and has enough weight to shoot steady. It is dead in hands, very quiet.

THANKS old_goat2 …I will take a look at the Hoyt Satori
And
THANKS reddogge for the extra details on your Titan III setup. This is the kind of added info I’m craving :)

Depends somewhat how deep your pockets are. If I had those pockets I would get a Hoyt Satori riser with Border Archery Hex 7.5 limbs. But I don’t have those pockets so my favorites are the Hoyt Excel riser with TT carbon/foam limbs. My other choice is a Ben Pearson compound riser with SF carbon/foam limbs.

THANKS M60gunner...not sure that I would spend for the Border limbs, but you make x2 for the Satori riser. But still also looking for some hands on use details like reddogge provided.

I have a sky archery tdx 17 inch riser to get longer working limbs . Limbs are 2xl foam carbon Limbs, srf sight , and shooting off a rest.
The rig is great if I hold up my end. The bow is silent but sounds different to my bamboo and glass bow.
I would love to get some border or acs limbs but the moolah is hard to come buy

THANKS acedoc for this info :)
When you say the bow is silent, but sounds different to your other bows...could you please elaborate.
-
One more leetle detail. Others I've shot with have commented on how quiet this bow is however I shoot it split finger which seems to make a big difference.
-
Good detail reddogge...I shoot split finger as well. THANKS :)

I shoot split finger as well, the bow sounds more high pitched as regards the twang than a glass bow. My research indicates that carbon Limbs do twang more than boo limbs.
I would have posted the videos of the bows being shot but my glass bow is being reborn at the bowyer after the tips gave way.

OK acedoc...thanks for the update :)
I do see a lot of folks putting on silencers right on their carbon limbs, including Borders highly praised limbs. That part turns me off somewhat...not saying I won't ever do this if I have carbon limbs...just saying it's kinda weird looking to me.
