So Mr. Alan Pope of Blacktail was kind enough to build me a beautiful takedown longbow which delivered this summer... it’s had a pretty good fall. I must say this is my favorite Bow I’ve shot todate. So should I just get on with it and post some pictures or should I drag this out and make it more Tradgang style? :campfire:
-
Drag it out. We need a good story.
-
Pics , then the story ! :campfire:
-
you tell us it's your story
-
drag it out with lots of photos please lol
:deadhorse:
What does the bow look like Andrew?
-
That’s a good idea! She’s 65 lbs at 30.5 in, which is around my DL, I’m probably a bit closer to 31.

Hmm not sure what I’m doing wrong here... copying direct link from imjur and pasting into photo link here. So until I get that resolved I’ll just leave a clickable link.

So, this story really starts with planning the final hunt for my father wrapping up his North American Archery superslam, yes all of them ... for now as it’s a bit of a moving target with subspecies being added occasionally. Not all of those were trad, most were taken with a wheel bow, but atleast 4-5 were trad I believe. Anyway.... the final animal he had on the list was Sitka Blacktail, so the logical destination was Kodiak Alaska. We also both happen to be private pilots, so what better way to get there than to fly ourselves all the way from Kansas City.

Should look like this:

Replace parenthesis () with brackets []. Note how I changed the address from https:// to http://. This allows the image to be automatically resized.

Ok, note to self... enter full screen then copy link. Seems to be workin for me now!

When using imgur, use the linked bb code. Just copy that code and paste it. Works for me anyways.
-
Oh ya, there might be two blacktail bows involved in this story.... Who knows what this might be?

So With our departure to Kodiak drawing near it was time to get packed....
My clothes are a mix of Sitka and First lite, boots were a pair of kenetrek mountain extremes, and Salomons. Really the salomons are exceptional for as light as they are. My primary bow for the trip was the Blacktail Colombian take down, and my back up was a Wes Wallace TD Royal. I shoot full length GT trads with zwickey deltas up front, for a total arrow weight around 700 grains. For Glass I was packing Swarovskii EL range 8x42 along with a tripod Qd to help steady on long glassing.
For food we took mountain house, jerky, nuts, and some candy/snacks.

Sorry to leave everyone hanging! had to travel for work today!
The Day of departure was finally upon us. We met at downtown KMKC before light and began loading the plane. We were Wheels up shortly after sun up. The plan for the day was to get all the way to anchorage since we were flying with the sun. Thats 2500 miles in one day, split between two Pilots into country known for nasty weather.
Our flight first took us to Montana for a fuel stop, then to Washington for fuel again, then to Ketchikan for more fuel, then to anchorage...
All of the flying was beautiful - we overflew the US rockies including a good look at Glacier National park, and then had sporadic but exceptional views of the mountains up the Canadian coast into Alaska.

The weather all the way up to Ketchikan was quite nice, and mostly clear. Lots of good views of the mountains & lots of fires in the Rockies.

Long trip for a day. What type aircraft are you flying? I worked in the aviation industry and lived a couple years in Kodiak, so am interested in your adventure and the details. SJ

And then????

This is starting to resemble fishing more than hunting...
