Folks, I'm not gonna lie to you... It's been a churn on whether to post up Personal Success / Seasonal Updates for awhile now. Then Photobucket made an easy excuse to shutdown. I never want to be seen as bragging or consuming the oxygen around the fire. Rather, simply add a little oxygen to keep the fire lit brighter that all might enjoy and together be a beacon to grow the community...

You may notice in the previous pic, the computer is closed, that pic was taken a couple of hours ago... Churn... As I contemplated whether to post, I took a moment to remind myself how many "New Personal Threads" I've created so I did a search:
It's been awhile...
-
So, while I was churning & surfing I stumbled on the "Gate" to PowWow...
I decided to enter... :campfire:
-
very nice
-
It's a good day to kick back while sitting by the fire and spin a thread I'd say :saywhat:
I know some of the details but will fallow along and enjoy a well told story :campfire: :coffee:
-
:campfire: funny you should say this... I have some things to post too but not knowing how to upload photos as easily anymore has kept me on "read only" mode....
I'm reading... Type away brother...
-
Unfortunately my churn has burned my “personal” early morning time... I have some folks I get the blessing of helping but I will return to the fire later. The thread will be more of a PowWow than a one hunt paragraph. May it be worthy of your time & add oxygen to the virtual campfire, not consume it...

By the time I was "ready" to post, I looked outside....

November 18th in Iowa. Almost 5 years to the date from when I harvested my biggest buck to date. "Rainbow", I call him Rainbow because the Thread I put together was:
"2012 Season of Dreams & A Journey To The Other Side Of The Rainbow"
What a Dream Season & Blessing on November 17th, 2012 Praise God for it all :notworthy:

I think I have the IMGUR basics down now so I'll carry on...
My last personal thread highlighted with my 2015 Iowa 10 Point Buck. A wonderful blessing, Praise God :notworthy:

Very nice! Thanks for sharing. :)

If you have followed my threads in the past, you'll know that just prior to that 2012 Dream Season, I lost any private land access for whitetails or turkeys that I once had... Kind of tough to take considering this is one of my passions. Oh well, I refuse to let Satan steal my joy and completely distract me from the many blessings God bestows on me each and every day...
God is Good, All the Time God is Good :notworthy:
These bucks are two of those Public Land Blessings :goldtooth:
-
Going into the 2016_17 Season, I was riding high with enthusiasm as I had "earned" a bonus any-sex tag for a Special County Park Hunt. I was one of 5 folks that harvested two does the previous year & I was drawn for the special permit. :saywhat:
This really extends my hunting opportunities as it's a place close to home... Most of my public opportunities are a fair drive away. To say I was excited, is an understatement. At the same time, I'm always looking forward to hunting does in hopes that I might "earn" another bonus permit for the following year!
Let the games begin! :archer2:
-
My Hunting Buddy Ben Holtz - "23Feetupandhappy" and I went to work at the County Park and we just plain struggled on the does.... :clapper: The downside of that is one of my most promising Public Land areas, is an area that I only hunt when we're in the area together... That means limited options.
I'm sticking & moving all over my zone to try and make something happen... Here's a couple of the deer I had opportunities on but ultimately passed:

A wonderful time in the woods, some incredible encounters but no venison, yet........

On one of Ben's evening hunts, he was walking out and bumped into a Mature Unique Buck. I remember Ben describing him as being a Stud with a Large Typical Left Side with a Goofy Right Side that's either deformed or broken... :saywhat:
I surely wanted a look at him up close, if you know what I mean
-
To give you a feel for one of the sets, I was hunting, here's a pic of a buck that came into my calling...
-
This is great. Just what I need!
-
Despite my best efforts I just could not lay eyes on a mature animal. I was starting to feel the clock of my short window in the County Park winding down... My mind started shifting towards the "Cliff" of LOCKDOWN :scared: This is especially true on Public Land where pressure is high and you're sharing the land with the masses. Don't get me wrong, it still only takes one opportunity/encounter for a Big Boy to make the wait all worth it. Much easier for me if I had at least one doe in the freezer!
So even with a few days left in my season, I started praying and wondering what God had in store for me...
-
It was a cool, crisp weekend morning and I'm on the East Side awaiting what God has in store... :saywhat:
-
:archer:
-
I'm focused on the shot opportunity, at about 15 yards I realize he's not gonna change his course on his own... :help:
I decide to start the draw sequence, and just keep my whole focus on the "pocket" and not the rack... I let out the "Mrrrpp" and he takes a few steps to a quartering away position around 16-17 yards. I'm at full draw when he settles, and the loose follows shortly thereafter :goldtooth: ):

I settle back into the stand and soak in what just transpired... Thank the Lord for an exciting hunt and the shot opportunity. Praying the shot results in a quick humane kill

In addition to the help Ben provided, it was good to have him to share in the moment.... Time for a couple of pics! :goldtooth:

This was one of those hunts where God chose the gift, and I thankfully accepted it. A true blessing indeed... :notworthy:

There was a few days left in the County Park Hunt, but I remember things just getting busy at home & work. The does were elusive...
Remember the West Side Stand where I'd passed the nice bucks, before moving to the East Side to chase the "Target Stud Buck".......?
I went in and recovered the camera when I tore down the stand.......
Look familiar? :saywhat:

Good Stuff KAZ, Congrats on the Buck I'm in for the rest!
-
Great story! That was a nice fat slap of seasoned oak you threw on the fire
-
Congratulations on a great buck, thanks for sharing the story and pictures with us.
-
Congratulations !!!!
-
Thank you everyone for reading, and the nice comments!
There's still a Statewide Any-Sex Tag, and some doe permits in 2016 :campfire:
-
As you might imagine, pulling the camera card to find the "Target Buck" and another Mature Buck cruising in daylight AFTER harvesting the 8 Point can chip away at your joy, IF you let it...
Ultimately, I've come to the point in my life where the Journey is more important than the destination and I do my best with what I have... I've read a lot of thread's lately indicating similar themes, but Ryan Rothhaar put it simply "Right Deer / Right Time". Pretty much sums it up.
Back to the Journey
-
KAZ,
Thanks for taking is along on your journey! It was a joy to read your thread, congrats on the buck!!
-
I'm still in the Peak of the Rut, so it's off to State Public Land to see if I can find a Wilderness Giant :scared:
-
I could take you up & down each elevation change of the Roller-Coaster that was the rest of early season on Public Land.... However, even I don't want to relive each frustrating piece of hunt interruption that is Public Land.
Don't get me wrong, I understand it's PUBLIC Land and that it's available to anyone. However, it's hard to take when you're up @2:00am, Drive an hour & 15 minutes, trek in, hang & settle in a scouted hide, only to have company, sometimes lots of company come in later at prime time or just for a walk...
All that being said, as seen in the previous pic, I'm happy to have what I have, as it can happen at any time!
Thank You Lord for All You Have Blessed Me With! :notworthy:
-
Ouch, he is a shooter all day everyday where I live. Keep after MR Jumbo, and keep posting.
-
Well I make my way through ALL phases of the Rut, including the dreaded CLIFF of Lock-Down. I cannot generate a Mature Doe or Jumbo Buck opportunity and the Early Season is drawing to a close.
It's now Friday December 2nd, 2016 and it's the Last Day before 1st Shotgun Season starting tomorrow... I will tell you that in my experience on Public Land the days following Shotgun Seasons are the absolute DESERT! I'm not saying it can't happen, but it exponentially ups the challenge with Traditional Gear. Plus the Weather may play with your plans... :help:
-
I'm up EARLY, and headed to Wilderness Public Land anxious to see what God has in store. While driving I'm playing back the entire season in my mind. I'm second guessing a few of the passes, especially the most recent one posted.
I'm still tweaking a little about my hunt interruptions on Public Land, but I can't help but feel thankful/grateful for the Blessings & Resources I do have, my Wife, Children, Family, Friends, Home, Job, Food, Truck, money for gas, the blessings go on & on AND the Public Land I'm going to hunt :notworthy:
-
I arrive well before daylight and prepare myself for the pack in! This will be an all day sit, or as long as I feel engaged. I dress in light under-layers to minimize the sweating on such a cold brisk morning. I load up my Turkey Vest with all the warm outer-layers and necessities. Then throw on the Lone-Wolf/3-Stick pack, grab the bow and head on in....
I get completely settled in the dark stillness of a beautiful Iowa Morning...
Thank you Lord for getting me here safely, on-time, no deer spooked, and alert! :notworthy:
May this be the day...
-
My Heart Rate has settled and so has my Soul... I have done my best, discerned each opportunity as it happened, and must release the consequences so that I might fully appreciate/receive what God sustains me with Daily... To look in the past, might very well distract me from the present.... :goldtooth:
-
The morning is peaceful, beautiful, and full of promise... :banghead:
-
I'm trying to stay optimistic & content, but now the guy who set-up his stand is starting to tickle/spar with some rattling antlers...
Wait... It sounds like the noise is getting closer! :saywhat:
I keep my eyes glued to where the sound is coming from and I see movement! Oh my... Two bucks are locked in a pushing match, and the larger buck is making progress my way. I then notice the doe that is out in front of them watching the whole ordeal :wavey:
-
This is FANTASTIC Travis i am tuned in!! :campfire:
-
Oh baby, a fight over a doe on December 2nd, the day before Shotgun Season!!! :saywhat:
I now can see that I'm dealing with two 8 Pointers. The time for action is now! The doe begins to head North which will be out of the Black Widow KB's range... I have to get the Bucks' attention if I have any hope at all. I reach for the "Can" call and start letting them have it. Both of the Bucks hear the call, and the smaller 8 starts circling to head my way. The larger 8 is conflicted, he's sharing attention between the real doe, and the "new" doe & small 8 he just whooped.
-
I keep the "Can" call going and it's WORKING...
The smaller 8 has nothing to lose by heading my way. He makes his way through the Pine Stand Alley you see in the picture of the "passed" buck, but he's further to the North/Right so he's behind me and no shot! I'll need him to cross through and come out to my left and in to the timber thicket. I keep the call going behind my back to draw him around as my real intentions are for the bigger one...
The doe has stopped maybe 30 yards further North. The smaller 8 breaks into the timber thicket on a familiar trail that goes right through my shooting windows at 17 yards.... The larger 8 has entered the Pine Stand Alley, but he is slow & reluctant. Constantly looking left at the doe, and right towards the smaller 8. WOW, this is tense!
-
At this point, the Larger Buck is about 20 yards straight down the Pine Stand Alley and on the edge of the Timber Thicket, and the smaller buck is about 12-15 yards down the familiar trail and well within range... I can tell the Larger Buck is conflicted and about to head for the real deal. It's now or never. I hit the "Can" Call one more time, put it away and ready for the shot, should he decide to take the necessary few steps into the opening... :notworthy:
-
The smaller buck took a few steps back towards me, and the Larger Buck took a few steps towards him...
I'd been waiting for this, so the string was already back, and I was focused on a spot right behind the shoulder at ~17 yards. Stay loose with shoulders active, push-pull, and the loose... :notworthy:
-
:jumper:
-
I believe I heard the crash, but where he ran drops off to a really deep ravine so the sound was muffled...
I caught movement to my left and noticed the doe was starting to do a full circle around me and was entering a shooting window. :saywhat:
I have not taken a doe this year so I had another arrow loaded. I'm already starting to envision the double
I'm ready, but she skirts me at about 22-25 yards and I just do not feel comfortable & she is nervous... Rightfully so
-
I make my way down out of the stand and slip off some of the extra weight outer-wear. It has warmed up a bit and I want to avoid Burrs!!! :banghead:
I make my way over to assess the impact spot and it looks like he broke the arrow on his first exit stride:
And on the second stride, the business end made it's way out...:
I'd say pretty good sign... :goldtooth:

Most excellent!! :bigsmyl:

It was about this time that Ben texted me inquiring if I had any action????

Ben responds and wants to see more! :goldtooth:

If you look uphill from where the buck came to rest you'll see a bloody 5" Diameter Tree. The buck made it up there but tumbled his way back down to rest right where he lay....

Absolutely one of the best threads that I have had the pleasure to see on the Gang! Thanks for taking the time to take us along!!! Congrats on both bucks.

Well done sir, I to am a public land guy and can definitely understand you problems, way to make the best of it though. Congratulations
-
As we are on Thanksgiving Eve 2017, I can't help but reflect on the many blessings that God has bestowed on me past & present. These two bucks indeed were a gift. Thank you Lord! :knothead:
I had opportunities @button bucks, fawn does, etc., but I just couldn't get the right opportunity on a mature doe. Oh well, on to 2017 as the freezer is in good shape!
-
2017_2018 Season started off with a special glimmer of Hope... :saywhat: A mutual friend of Ben & myself purchased a new piece of property and graciously offered to let us & another individual hunt this year. It's a beautiful piece of property, on the small side, but it is indeed a blessing & privilege. I'm so thankful for it.
I was slow to get out there due to work commitments and I had another Zone/Season in the Special County Park Hunt again this year. We were getting trail camera pics from the owner of a few nice bucks so I kind of figured I'd let the place rest / be a sanctuary and hit it hard during Late October thru November  It was just one of those years for me, plenty of bucks/fawn does/button buck, etc. but no mature does for me. I'm not gonna lie, it takes a few deep breaths in & reflection of how God is Faithful past & present to stay positive when you're getting texts of multiple shot opportunities & deer down when you're waiting on your first shot... :notworthy:
My County Park hunt ended with several cool encounters with Bucks, fawns, & close calls, but no opportunities at Mature Does which is what I was after... Time to focus on Public Land and this new private spot. :archer:
-
Congrats! Great season and great story's!
-
About two weeks into October, I get word that my Father-In-Law had found a possible private spot for me to hunt! :saywhat: :notworthy:
After some solid correspondence with the Owner, My wife and I decided to head down after Church on Oct. 22nd and meet the Owner and His wife. I brought a stand just in case, but our main goal was to introduce ourselves, get to know one another, and fully understand the property & owner's wishes. It was a great visit, with the owners and the neighbors, etc.. So thankful to my wife for going along as she had great conversation with both of them. It didn't take long for me to discern a nice funnel to hang a stand in. It's a small property, but I definitely found a "pinch" point along a creek that connected two timbers. A possible rut corridor :jumper:
-
We had such good conversation, light was definitely leaving us. I was able to free up & slip in with a quick Lone Wolf & 3-Stick set. It was the classic paralysis of knowing where I needed to be, but the trees were miserable options. Crooked, small, goofy, etc.... :saywhat:
The ride home with my wife was good, and I can tell you it was very uplifting to have a private spot to hunt... Great visit with great folks :campfire:
-
As I was on my way home, I was mentally planning out my strategy for the week & getting a stand setup/ready at the new joint Property Ben & I have. I got the text that Ben was gonna head out there tomorrow, so he'll be first in there to give it ago. We both knew that this spot should heat up as the Rut progressed. Well, it didn't take long for Ben to have action. He saw some deer, and had an opportunity at a nice 8Pt on his feet early in the hunt trailing a doe... :saywhat:
It was clear I needed to get my stand up at that property, so I can begin 2017_2018 Statewide Season... Ben & I discussed the overall strategy, and it was clear where I'd hang my first stand. I grabbed my XOP Air Raid Hang-On & (4)Sticks knowing it was up to the task. Due to the size of the tree, I needed extension straps for the straps but all went well! The stand was a little tricky to hang due to it's size and that it was a Shag Bark tree, I believe a Shag Bark Hickory(?), so a little bit of a pain. However, it was in the RIGHT SPOT! :archer:
I got my first chance to sit the spot on Oct. 26th :archer:
Here's the 54" Black Widow KB, 53lbs @ 28" ready for Action! :goldtooth:
-
It was a pretty good sit. Saw a small 7 or 8 point work a scrape, feed on acorns, and then I called him into my set... A Nubby Buck, and at the Buzzer, a nice buck followed a doe by but it was just too dark for me, even though it was still legal light. A close call & beautiful night to begin the Rut!
Friday October 27th, turned out to be real windy but I started getting texts from Ben that he was out at one of his Family properties going after the "Drop Tine" Buck. It was fun to get the play by play from him and you can read it on his posts.
I started preparing for my first hunt at the 25 Acre Spot tomorrow Oct. 28th, where my wife took the beautiful sunset pic :archer:
-
All goes well, and it feels good getting settled into the Hotel early. It's off for my first time in... :saywhat: :
The temps are rapidly dropping and I am absolutely full of anticipation, hope, and thankfulness to be sitting in this stand! :notworthy: :goldtooth:
-
I settle in to the beauty of the Pre-Rut Iowa woods. It's chilly, barometric pressure rising, and we're headed towards a crisp clear sky!
I pic up movement off to the west, then a glimmer of tines :saywhat: He's moving East, but he'll skirt me to the South if I don't do something. I hit the grunt call a few times. I've got his attention, and he starts heading my way. :help:
This guy has Love & War on his mind so I guess he's not the wariest :goldtooth:
-
A great encounter no doubt, thank you Lord  I'm stoked to get my first opportunity of the year. They're kind of milling/browsing towards me, when I decide to look out where they're heading and make sure if any other deer are in the area. That's when I pick up movement in the thicket to the South East, not too far from where the previous buck made the scrape. Oh boy, I've got ACTION and it's fixin to get good! :goldtooth:
Now my attention is on the newcomer. All the while the 3 Does are now angling right through my shooting lanes at 10-15 yards. I've been waiting to shoot a mature doe for 1-1/2 years and here they are!!!! :goldtooth:
-
He's only about 40 yards away, so I give a muffled directional grunt so as not to spook the does I have in front of me but get his attention... :saywhat:
I've fully committed at this point, discerning that I cannot pass up this opportunity that God is blessing me with... I prepare for the shot at the first shooting lane to avoid testing his patience/wariness with my wind... :notworthy:
-
I immediately start replaying the whole shot sequence, impact location, buck's reaction, the crashing, the SILENCE.... :knothead: :biglaugh:
-
I commit to a plan. I'll head back to town, eat supper and give the buck approximately 3 Hours to expire... I'll trail the first 40-50 yards where I heard the SILENCE.... If anything looks negative, I'll resume in the morning...
So, the landowner says "If the light is still on when you get back, Text me and I'll come out and HELP"...
I head into town for a pizza, and a relaxing fizz... Watch some TV at the hotel, and burn a few texts with friends. Ben had some good providence as well, so he was tied up as well. A few other texts to friends were made, and of course to my wonderful blessing(Wife). Oh well, after my predetermined waiting period expires, I'm off to the property for the recovery... I show up, and the light is on so I text the landowner... Crickets..... :knothead: I've got my belt pack full of Field Dressing Supplies, and a Large MagLite for trailing... Now's as good a time as any to say I lost my HeadLamp and have yet to replace it!!! Uh-oh..... :banghead:
-
After the walk in, I stop at my treestand to just plain settle my heart rate, emotions, and soul... I've done my best, and Trust God to bring His Will to fruition for my best and His Glory! :notworthy:
-
Here's my first glance at my prize.... :goldtooth:
-
I wish I had some better pics, but I'm a one man show in the middle of the below freezing temp night with a whole lot of Iowa Whitetail Buck to tend too..... GLADLY & THANKFULLY! :saywhat:
-
I start texting anybody I know for a little help... Crickets.... One last text to the landowner... Crickets... :knothead: .. :knothead:
My buck died in a drainage like ditch and he's not going anywhere til he loses some weight!!!
I tried to balance my Maglite and deal with this stubborn 200+lb buck to no avail. I then pull out the rope and do my best to channel Mike Mitten's Solo Moose Hunting skills..... I've got a full 100 ft of rope lashed from this leg to that tree, back to this leg and over to that tree, and so on, til this buck looks like he's on an operating table, just so I can balance my light and field dress him.....
No laughing...
-
I successfully get the buck field dressed and the autopsy revealed I hit "everything" vital to his survival... I remember pulling out the heart and it was the size of a large mature PINEAPPLE! Wow...
The cavity immediately begins to cool in the mid 20degree temps, and I am so thankful for the wonderful meat this animal will provide for my family and friends... Thank you Lord for it all!
I make my way back to my prize and with my 100Ft Mike Mitten Moose Rope, I lash this brute to the cart and shoulder the task at hand... The first 30 feet out of that ditch was pretty dicey as I wasn't sure if I was winning or losing as I teetered between slow uphill progress, and a dangerous free fall to where I began....
Alas, I made it out of that BURR infested thicket... Mission accomplished :goldtooth:
-
So back to hotel for a little sleep, I think I'll skip the morning hunt.....
More pics to finish up, thank you for your patience and sharing the campfire with me :notworthy: :campfire:
