Steve Spence has offered to post the photos documenting this hunt. I'll try to shorten up the complete story as I have history with this one and it's rather detailed. So bear with me.
In November 2015 I was on my way into my stand for that afternoon. It's a short ladder (8 feet) in a small cedar tree in the right place. Therefore, I wear my Ghilli suit when in the stand. Stopping 50 yds. short of the ladder I put on my Ghilli and was just adjusting my armguard when I looked up and saw him coming. He was just out cruising. He walked by broadside at maybe 20 yds. He saw me standing there but the Ghilli worked great. We had a long stare-down and he accepted me as no threat. It appeared open but there were a lot of 2" diameter saplings between us. I gave it 50/50 odds of getting an arrow through. I don't like 50/50 odds on big bucks. So I let him walk off hoping he'd pick up a hot chick and bring her back through the pinch I would be covering. Oh, just ten yards from my ladder he let me watch him demolish a poor tree.
Fast forward March 2016. During one of my whitetail bootcamps I was parading 15 attendees down a dry creek bottom 1/2 a mile away. Something caught my eye and I said "Is that an antler way up there?" One long legged young guy runs up and brings it back. They said, "you gotta be kidding me... no way!" I obviously got accused of planting the shed but I swear to God I didn't. It was at least a hundred yards away but the light just hit it right and it caught my eye.
Fast forward late October 2016. I was in a stand in the timber one morning and here he comes right to me. The bad news is I had open heart surgery that summer and wasn't able to practice. So I promised myself not to shoot at anything over 15 yards. I'm proud of the fact I killed two big bucks last year and both were ten yard shots. Anyway, this one stood broadside at probably 27 yds. I just didn't feel comfortable with the shot so I again let him walk figuring it was early in the season and I might get another crack at him. It was really tough to let him walk away too because he had stickers and was obviously a fully mature stud. Never saw him again in 2016.
The morning of October 30, 2017 was windy (20+ MPH). In high winds deer tend to prefer the more open stuff because everything in the timber is moving. I chose another low stand in a bigger cedar. You guys would shake your heads at this one because although it's a big, thick mature cedar the stand (a Screaming Eagle) platform is only about 6 feet up. I never saw a deer until 8:32 AM when a single hot doe walked/trotted by. I could tell she was being followed. But he never came by until 8:45. It was a sight to behold. He was walking fast with his nose to the ground obviously trailing her. And he was very upset that she was not cooperating. He was growling the whole time. I don't mean a tending grunt but a constant growl. There was a big scrape right there 15 yds. from me. As he came by it he charged it and very aggressively started pawing, throwing dirt 20 feet behind him and loudly growling the whole time. Then he attacked the overhead limb, shredding it and breaking it off.
The doe had gone to the left but his body was facing to my right. I positioned my feet so I could take the shot either way. He started to my left a couple yards then abruptly turned to my right growling the whole way. I gotta admit it was VERY cool and the things dreams are made of. He was walking pretty fast at about 15 yds. when I plugged him. He was just slightly quartering away so the arrow angled forward, came out the far side and stopped just under the skin in the meaty part of his upper front leg. Then when he brought his leg back he snapped the shaft off (Woodsman stayed in) but he only made it 100 yds.
For those into measurements he ended up measuring 173 6/8" gross as a 7x7 typical. He didn't have the stickers this year but instead put that growth into mass. His bases were 6 5/8". The way his rack is built it's tough to see all the tines. For example on this frontal his left G3 is superimposed over an 11 inch left G2 you can't even see in the picture. Sorry. Anyway, I'm very pleased and proud of him, especially after passing him up twice. I think he's probably 7.5 yrs. old and field dressed 210 lbs. at the locker.
So.. that's my story and I'm sticking to it. Best of luck to all. BW
Awesome story, cant wait to see the photos.
Oh man that's awesome. Looking forward to the pics!
Wow, you are incredible congratulations that's amazing sir
:clapper: Looking forward to the pictures!
I will say I'm not someone who is impressed with a score just not for me but I'm super impressed with your ability to get so close so constantly to animals of that caliber truly truly impressive sir
Thanks for sharing!!! Can't wait to see the pictures. Great podcast by the way on the push. Enjoyed very much while sitting all day on stand.
Although a lineman by trade , I don't get up to high if the background cover is good. It gets that arrow flying horizontally and I think we all practice more from the ground. Barry someone said that when you take your boot camp, you automatically get total access to your hunting property during the rut. I think that is mighty considerate of you!
Congratulations Barry! Love the story and looking forward to the pictures.
Good stuff Barry - congrats again!
Great story as usual, and like already stated the sheer number of Big Buck encounters is a testament to your great hunting ability, sir!
This is the buck's left shed antler Barry found during one of his bootcamps. Note the guy in the upper right punching in the coordinates! :saywhat:

This is the Barry's buck in the 2016 season (note the stickers) when he passed on him.....

And here is he on Oct 30 of this year! The way the antlers are it's hard to see all the tines in any one photo. For example in this one his left G3 is superimposed over and hiding an 11" left G2. Sorry! He ended up measuring 173 6/8" gross as a 7x7. He gave up his 2016 stickers and added mass instead. The bases were 6 5/8". I'm guessing he was 7.5 yrs old. Field dressed over 213 lbs. What a stud!

Floyd: A 58" Tall Tines take-down recurve by Brian Wessel from Keokuk, Iowa. 61 lbs. at 28". Old Cabela's SST-230 (skinny carbon) shafts; 125 grain Woodsman broadhead, plus a 125 grain steel adapter so 250 up front (I did that math in my head) and three five-inch feathers. bw
Very Nice Uncle Barry. It's great to see you still after them. Congrats. Jeff Harper
Swap that hat out for a red one and I think we've found the Roaming Gnome that got away from the Travelocity commercials :)
by the way, nice deer!

OMG
What a buck. Congratulations Barry!
there's not many out there like Uncle Barry and Gene. I hope God let's us keep them for many more years to enjoy. They leave those expert teams on the outdoor channel just scratching their heads. If anyone could make money off their accomplishments it would be them but it's been the opposite. Great Buck Unc.
Thanks for all the nice comments guys. You don't like my hat Ryan? Everyone asked why it isn't on crooked. Actually it is. That polar fleece job is turned sideways. You just can't tell because it doesn't have a bill. By the way Ryan, congratulations on your IN buck. I meant to comment on it at the time you got him but I was in hot pursuit. Good job buddy. bw
Great buck, congratulations. Bow hunting October Whitetails is still my all time favorite DVD.
Fantastic... and sincere congratulations from the north bush country!
I've "known" you for a long time (way before my hair was grey) through your writing and your films and I always enjoyed your work.
You're "good people" and I'm happy for you.
Great deer Brother!
Barry,
Congratulations on another fine buck.
Having attended your bootcamp, I will attest that you do more homework and studying than anybody I have met. That said, you still continue to amaze me with your consistent success.
Yep that's quite a buck, Congrats Barry.
Congrats Uncle Barry !!! Now aren't you glad you came to Louisiana and helped us out !! Good deeds get rewarded.
Barry... Thanks ... Im not a tech guy when it come to arrows...Trying to learn tho... Hunting with my
60"Kentuckian longbow its 62 @27 and I pull to 30", Im using 30" cedar shafts with a 125 grain Zwickey Delta. I have trouble with carbons when it comes to putting a broadhead up front... Thank you again for the reply... God Bless you brother and congratulations again....
You 2 are impressive gentlemen!
Congrats on your buck!
That must be something to see mature bucks like that and how they differ and act compared to younger deer. Must be amazing to be able to whiteness!
Another great buck! Congrats Barry. I've said many times that if I were a big buck, I sure wouldn't want you and Gene after me.
Beautiful buck. When's the next book coming out? :bigsmyl:
Walt: I do probably do more homework and studying than most people realize. But that's half the fun of it. Regarding my whitetail bootcamps, I decided to do a couple more next March. They are only allowing me to do two because we clogged the septic system (too much BS?) at the host lodge facility last year. I know I've said it before but these will absolutely be my last ones. I haven't even made a formal announcement and I'm half sold out already. I'll post an announcement on TG soon.
Damon: regarding the next book, not sure about that but I do have several new ventures I'm working on. I just finished a new FOUR HOUR DVD that they started replicating yesterday. It should be available in a couple weeks but I'll believe it when I receive the shipment. It is very "different" and I believe will be very well received/popular. Same thing, I'll post something on here when it's available. Meanwhile, stay tuned. Thanks. bw
Can't wait for the new video!!
Tremendous buck Barry! Congrats!
Congrats! What a great buck and story! Almost as good as the Hurley story.
