Hopefully by fall hunting season Rob and I will have some changes that are in the works done that we are working on....
Our format/platform has served us well since Tradgang's birth....
Hard to believe how long we've been around....pre facebook-youtube-instagram.
We feel no matter the labor, difficulty, or the expense, we must preserve the wealth of information here. There is just too much info and memories to just archive this site and start over with access to all the above mentioned being a burden to find.
The hard part is moving over all of what we have to a new format/platform, but it will make the site much more user friendly.
No sure of what all the new platform will do just yet...fixing to get taken to school by Rob this afternoon.....but, we would like to you....
If you have any ideas throw them out.....we'll see what all is available to do...and/or what we might could add.
Many thanks....and wish us LUCK!!!
Good luck Terry!
I know in the past it wasn't feasable to post pictures straight from phone or ipad.
I certainly would post more photo's without having to take the time using photo bucket or others.
Time sure flies, don't it.
The only thing I can think of is photo posting without the need to go through a site like Photobucket or Imgur would make it more user friendly.
I second the picture request, it should be made easier.
Direct picture posting would be great. Not critical but would be nice if we could update our own avatar similar to what you can do on Facebook with profile pictures.
X2 on what Macbow said. I would post more pics too if I could take them off my computer or phone (cam) Photobucket has grown to be difficult at best. Lots of pictures means lots of enjoyment.
I think this is going to be great. The wealth of knowledge and past stories is one of, if not the, largest reasons I come here almost daily. I can't say that about anywhere else.
Excited to see what the future hold. Hoping to be able to post pictures more easily! lol.
Direct pictures from phone or tablet please.
Terry,
I appreciate being part of this group and the effort you and Rob put into it.
I'm not a hi-tech guy though and I too still have trouble posting pictures... sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
I know that to "computer people", young people, those who enter pictures often, and to the moderators it may seem ridiculously easy -
but I'm sure there's a lot of others on this site that are much more capable in the woods than on the computer, LOL!
Whatever changes there are however, you can count on my continued support.
Well, I guess for those of us who are tech. challenged I hope you don't go to crazy....... :biglaugh:
I for one like the site the way it is. Not into facebook and the other stuff. Hope you have luck in your upgrade but please, lets not lose who we are.
Direct photo's would be nice....and the ability to embed YouTube, Vimeo, etc, videos would be super!
Direct photo upload is my only request. For those who are active on facebook, I see many more photos there and rarely duplicate post with photos here.
In reading the previous posts, I see a common theme.
I was a member of a mountain bike webpage forum that was pre-facebook and social media. It failed to grow with technology and is now gone. There is too much here to lose. Photos with posts are almost what everyone is after. Almost.
Ditto on the direct photos from iphone, computer etc. As Danny says , not into facebook etc. so the current site is fine by me.
Not sure where the Facebook comments are coming from we're not going to be on Facebook as a forum I can guarantee you that... I don't do Facebook either except for the two friends I have and those are my daughters.
We're just going to have to have more upgraded software and move from this platform to a more advanced and a more user-friendly one
I do like the way the threads are setup on here better than the posts/comments on Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.
One nice option would be able to "follow" certain categories (pow wow, collecting/history, certain state pages, etc.) and have posts from all of your followed categories show up in a feed similar to FB instead of having to go to each page to look through the posts there. Maybe still have the individual pages also available.
Not sure if it would work with how the new design would be, but maybe also add something that allows you to form a "Friends" group similar to FB with guys you know. Maybe have it where their posts show up higher on your feed.
And maybe have it where you can "follow" sponsors of your choosing where you'll be shown their posts in some sort of feed without having to scroll through everything. I'm sure sponsors would like that.
Just some thoughts. I'll be here no matter what.
Matt

I think it's mostly using the FB format as an example. That's how I meant it in my suggestions. LinkedIn is another social media page that has a similar format to FB.
I second everything is been said by the other members. You made an excellent work for all these years thanks again.
I agree with others on the easy photo posting. I bet we will see a lot more photos than before.
I think making picture and video easier to post, perhaps a chat area, would be nice (especially in evening), following certain threads would be nice as well. I feel we need to keep the messaging and/or email option, for one on one contacting. I also think either a standard area to contact administrator's be good too.
I love the site the way it is. My only request would be, as others have stated, to be able to direct upload pics from my phone. I'd post a lot more pics if it was simple...as it is, I have to have my wife do the photobucket thing and she HATES it.
I also hope the format stay basically the same. I hate mobile friendly sites on my phone...they are SO SLOW and aggravating.
I think the direct photo thing from the phone would be a good thing. If I ever get my phone off the kitchen wall I could use that maybe. :dunno:
Consider a tab where it posts ALL the most recent posts from all of the other folders or whatever you call it. This way you can go right there and see what is new. Still keep ( and use) all the folders, but be able to do a one stop shop kinda visit.
Considering the overwhelming desire for a better photo posting option, why not set your site up to automatically forward any pictures we post directly here onto a photo-bucket type site that only you have access to, that then pulls from it to show them here.
Would make it easy for us, and you would have no massive storage issues.
I'm with everyone on the direct pic posts. I'm extremely happy with everything else!
Thank you.
I hate photobucket so I agree on the uploading pics part. I'm probably the least tech savvy guy on here lol, so I don't know what it takes to do it, but I have Tapatalk for a couple other forums and it makes it super easy to upload pics and videos. Just no idea what it takes to have a forum added to tapatalk.
Glad to hear Facebook and Twitter is not going to take over. I like the forum as is but I am sure you guys will not mess it up.
Cool anything to help us computer illiterates
Wow , direct picture posting would be awesome .
I have taken pictures , cropped them , and send them to Photobucket and wait .
And waite.....
To only find out the upload failed .
Then try again .
Yeah , I vote for the direct picture posting . That would help a whole bunch .
This format may have age to it....but it sure is the easiest to use that am aware of. Well done obviously. Personally I like the current site. upgrades are nice....but hope we don't lose the ciurrent flavor. Either way...I trust it will be great.
Looks like the picture thing is covered...
It would be nice to click on a thread and have the newer posts/replies show up, instead of scrolling to find where you left off. Some of the longer threads have many pages to scroll through.
Maybe even an icon that shows which thread you participated in. Makes those threads easier to find when you don't remember the title.
Maybe a format for smartphones and access to Tradgang through Tapatalk.
Good luck Terry. I love this place. I haven't been able to be here as much as I like as access is a bit cumbersome through my phone but after my transition i hope to have a puter again.
Terry, best website that I visit period..!! I've gained more knowledge on here than I could ever hope to locally in my neck of the woods..!!
One thing that I could see an improvement in, which some members have already expressed, is making it easier to post pics....I've never had problems posting pics, but I see that mentioned more than anything, especially in the classifieds.
Not sure if that's on your radar, but a suggestion.
Thanks for a great site...
Jr.
I may be aging myself a bit here...but Tapatalk compatibility would be AWESOME!!
Ditto x 133 for pics.
Always wanted some archive for the wealth of knowledge from members who go on various hunts. (Like Kevin Dill, Steve O, J/J/M- Dryad guys, etc.) Would love to know tips for various hunts/states, equipment ideas, lists, etc. Maybe archive for State or Type of Hunt.
Thanks.
Dan in KS
My facebook comment was an example of the ease of posting a pic instantly. Nothing more. I see lots of the same threads here are also on various facebook pages generated by the same original author. The facebook pages have photos with the comments. Here it is a hit or miss, depending on the author. Tradgang would be better enhanced with an on site photo upload capability. That's it in a nutshell.
Picture upload would be nice, but as it is, Tradgang is the greatest archery forum on the internet. I thank you Rob and Terry, and any others that help build/maintain this place. I can only hope that changes don't compromise that.

If no one mentioned it yet...
Direct picture posting.
And some sort of trad event tracker/calender so dates can be submitted and we can just look on the calender and see whats coming up.
And perhaps let a non tech savvy tradganger test the user interface of the new platform for usability. Obviously changes take some getting used to, but some changes are easier than others.
Coming from a Millennial's point of view, I love for the most part on how the site is designed compared to other Social websites. That said i would reiterate the previous comments on direct picture posting. Other than that I believe the site is spot on!
check out the updated format of bladeforums. I really like the update. everything carried over well and its clean and well organized.

x2. Perhaps a few modern features but I like tradgang just the way it is.
You do a tremendous job taking care of this forum.Do what you think is best, you have done really well all these years.
Terry
Terry and Rob:
I think the website is very user friendly. Perhaps just focusing on some of the recurring problems that some members run into -- trouble posting pictures is an example -- would be the best course of action. One thing is for sure, this is a special place and keeping it special is a priority.
My two cents worth...
Joe
Thanks guys keeping it all coming. We are working again on a new platform as we have put enough Band-Aids on this one over the years and we won't be able to patch it up any further.
Yeah I like this format too but we can't continue on we have to spread our wings and make way for a new venture it will take a little getting used to but it will be easier to navigate once you learn as it will be user-friendly and much more personal and again it has nothing to do with Facebook Twitter Myspace Flickr flattered flu blue whatever so please don't post any more about Facebook this is not about Facebook..... please get that out of your head.
I'm sure Rob will be along shortly to post his comments I have no idea what Tapatalk is but I'm going to find out
Taptalk is just a an app on your phone that lets you subscribe to several different forums all in the same place. You'll have to search for the forum you're looking for and then add it to your "library". It's very useful!
Either way, I think it will be interesting! Though I am very pleased with this format, I know what is coming will be better.
Terry,
do you have a planned release date?
Side note: I would have to be the one that has to transfer all this data over. Sorry, Rob..
if trad gang is to survive, flourish, grow, and entice folks over to at least trying the tools we prefer for bowhunting, we need to move to a new home that will not only be "more current" in terms of functionality, but a forum software platform that will allow updating its functionality as technology advances.
this house, our current forum software, has served us well for over 14 years, but it is "grandfathered" software that can't be updated for functionality.
we've been testing/using new software for several other "traditional sports" forums, and it's been working quite well, if not superbly. you can get a feel for it over at our sister site www.BlackPowderGang.com (http://www.blackpowdergang.com)
daily user access, navigation, and posting in the new forum software is pretty much the same as it is right here with our old forum software.
the new forum software allows ...
- automatic attachments of images and other files
- immediate embedding of video "TV" screens in posts
- a far superior PM system
- member photo gallery that allows attachment images
- a MUCH improved forum search engine
- a MUCH better method for automatic registrations
- MUCH easier re-access for forgotten passwords and logins
- many levels of security to keep out the bad guys (yeah, they're still lurking around)
- a vastly superior method of handling trad gang contributing members
- much improved sponsor handling, banners and ads
- advanced member profile fields
- a better moderation system that includes a warning system
- better seamless integration with taptalk and mobile devices
- and much much more ....
trad gang will have a presence in at least 6 of the most popular social media outlets. these will be portals to direct interested folks over to here, the real trad gang.
we don't want to create a "new and improved trad gang". we don't want to change the focus and goals and camaraderie that has always been what trad gang is all about. we just wanna trade in that ol' forum software for a new home that's more user friendly, feature rich, comfy, and still allows for the free flow sharing of all things traditional bowhunting.
Completely agree Rob..
I just want to express my major wish..
Tapatalk compatability..
Wow, sounds Great.
So will we have to re-register on the new site? Or will everything be moved automatically?
Just took a peak at Black powder gang sit. Pretty much same layout, looks easy to use. I like it. If photos can be loaded from phone and IPad like said above go for it.
Did anybody think of suggesting direct picture posting capability? :D
Tradgang competes with all other websites and social media for user/subscriber time. It is a wise move to try to update the forum to make it more user friendly in an age where so many choices are available.
One thing that I have noticed is a trend for ever shorter attention/responses to a given thread. There are very few topics that generate any type of sustainable conversation. I think that it is due to overall patterns of social media behavior. A common theme on other mediums is the ability to "like" or otherwise affirm someone's post without completing a full reply. Call it instant affirmation or instant gratification. I think the addition of some type of similar feature on tradgang would be a positive concept.
Thanks, Terry and Rob, for tackling the task of updating rather than let this resource/community fade away like a number of other outdoor forums have.

Everything I was thinking of as an improvement was touched on here.
Black powder gang has what I feel is an easy enough to learn/ intuitive format.
I wish those involved very good luck and tons of patience during the migration.
Thank you for this site and all the work required to keep it what it is. :notworthy:
John
anything ya'll do is just fine with me!!ya'll do a mighty fine job so I am greatful for this place and many thanks for all ya'll do to make it what it is. :notworthy:
Wow... that's more than I would have thought... and I can actually understand most of what he wrote, LOL!
Be sure to keep the search functions, a lot of great info here. Hopefully easier picture posting from phone or computer, this is the only forum I can't post pictures to.
Thank you for many years of entertainment.
I hope the change won't be too radical, but I will be glad to see an easier method of adding pictures. Will the screen layout be similar to the new black powder forum? If so, all will be well for me, as I like it.
anyone can get a taste of the forthcoming trad gang forum software by simply checking out www.BlackPowderGang.com (http://www.blackpowdergang.com) - it's so much exactly the same as it is here, but loaded with more features that can be used, should you choose. other than that, it's still about posting.
While this forum is a bit long in tooth...it is still a far cry more user friendly than its main competitor that has been around a little longer...ESPECIALLY when it comes to adding photographs and editing posts... :)
Rob does a great job....
The thing I like most about Trad Gang is the atmosphere, it's just a nice place to hang out and browse through the forums. I'm a member on a lot of other forums and some of them just seem cold and uninviting in a lot of ways. So if you could replicate the layout, and "feel" that would be great.

It would be handy if you didn't have to wait for a reply to send another pm imho

I have no trouble posting pics either.
More photo posting options would be great. Good luck.
I too would like to see easier/direct picture posting.
To echo a few previous comments . . .
Tapatalk compatible would be GREAT (this cannot be overstated, I don't think).
In any event, thanks for a great site.
Frankly, I don't really care about the format. I'm just interested in the exchange of ideas that happen. However, I have my roots in the 20th century, and have to defer to a new generation.
Never had an issue with posting pix, but software goes obsolete rather quickly these days and that in itself causes issues.
I didn't read all the suggestions but mine would be to make it easier to post photos. I am tech challenged and too old to learn.
in order for me to post a photo for the give away on St Judes I had to send an email photo to someone and they sent me back a link that I copied to post the photo. I know if it was easier for me I would post more for the give away.
Terry....
I'm a member of a local outdoor forum here in MI. A couple of years ago they ran into the same situation...they needed to upgrade to a current message board because the old one was loosing it's tech support.
During that switch over, they tried using Tapatalk. The issue with Tapatalk is that they had no way to implement their advertisements for revenue, or the go go juice that keeps that specific forum running. Much like this one, it's obvious that this forum is kept running for it's members by the generous support of the advertisers here(which is why alot of users specifically request recommendations from forum sponsors). Anyways, they developed a similar tapatalk app called OutdoorHub. If at all possible, I'd look at that app hosting service for a mobile platform rather than tapatalk(even though I'm a huge user of taptalk). They can accomodate individual forums and ad banners to utilize those individual forum sponsors so you don't lose revenue with the mobile format user. They also allow for forums with paid subs that grant access to certain forums like the classifieds here. Some things like subscribing to the forum still requires a desktop, but the trend is moving more towards mobile users.
Don't worry, we're all still trad...but to stay efficient with the sharing of ideas in an increasingly mobile use world...compatibility with mobile forum apps are a must.
Just a thought.
bryan,
mobile integration is absolutely one of our concerns.
too bad the mobile device designers and manufacturers didn't care that their devices were never going to be compatible with REAL computers and only thought about the money first and foremost. but that's water long gone past under the bridge, and why there are SO many issues with interactive websites and mobile devices.
anyhoo, SMF2.0 is reasonably mobile friendly, and the forthcoming SMF2.1 will be as mobile friendly as any forum software, at any price point cost.
all of this is meaningless until, unless, *IF* we can migrate to new, "modern" forum software. at this point, it's definitely not a done deal. converting old flat file systems over to mysql relational database systems is not an easy row to hoe ....

Just a thought about the pain or the need to convert the data....
I get there is a lot of data on this site, but...I would say the value-proposition of this site is a good place to converse on the topic of tradition hunting and not the data. For example, look how often folks ask the same questions over and over and never search. And the search engine on this site is a good one to boot. Additionally, very seldom does someone bring an old topic forward to continue the conversation either.
So ease of conversation may be the driver of the new site vs. the value of the data. Just think about it is all as I would hate to see the site not modernize (it needs it bad - sorry) because the existing data conversation challenge was too onerous.
Thanks for asking for our opinion, and thanks in advance for all your hard work on this...

I hear what you're saying but let's take in consideration all the brace height threads there are no pictures very little text have very few answers yes they're asked over and over but they are a drop in the bucket to the wealth of information that truly needs to be moved a search could be done for the word brace and all those can be deleted same thing for other numerous topics that get asked but there's way too much viable information just to start over I hope y'all can comprehend that
And please don't take that as combative there's a lot of work to be done and a lot of pruning could be done of those frivolous Topix before the move
It would be nice to have a section that would allow people to meet locally. For example, I live hours away from any traditional organization. I would love to be able to meet others around me that want to shoot or organize hunts together. .....or , maybe this already exists and I am not aware of it.
Dan
Oldrub....just make a post on the PowWow, no worries.
And, we will continue to keep Tradgang as intended, where people can get real information from experienced people from all realms of hunting and shooting with the TradBow!
Oldrubline,
There are forums at the bottom of the main page for the individual states, however they dont see much use unfortunately.

As long as it's easy to use and I'm still a member.
I think what ever happens it will be thanks to terry & rob so it will be great :campfire:
Would like to see bigger "buttons" (;i.e. "log on" , "forum home"'"search" etc)., and page numbers.
They are small when using a desk top computer, they are TINY when using my 5"x7" tablet screen.
Wish you could delete a post you made yourself.
Wish classifieds were no cost.

Thanks riser....all can be consider but free classifieds...we will NEVER go down that road again...and if you were in charge of it you wouldn't either....life is too short to deal with scammers!!!
We are neck deep into this....things are in the works....Rob will make an update post soon I'm sure as to what's going to take place and when.
I have a few bows in the classifieds for sale to try and offset some of the costs of this huge upgrade and mover over as well as a NEW server we are going to have to move to.
Wheeew....what a project!!!
I can't wait for this.
Thanks, Terry and Rob, for all your hard work on this matter!
We've been pouring over this all day.... hopefully Rob will have an update only if the test conversion came through without too many problems.
Man this test run sure has been running I think it's been 4 days now ...I'll be getting with Rob later this morning to see kind of where we're at .....again we hope to have this done before hunting season gets in full gear
I have no news as of early this morning on how the 2nd conversion went. As soon as I hear something it will get posted on this thread.
In the meanwhile, please think about this ....
Trad Gang is dedicated to the promotion and preservation of traditional bowhunting. No Trad Gang member is ever asked or told that a fee is required to participate in the conversations, to both share and absorb all things within the periphery of traditional bowhunting.
We instituted a fee to access the Trad Gang Classifieds for the primary reason of putting a stop to the constant scamming and hustling we all had to deal with on a near weekly basis. It was either that or there'd be no Trad Gang Classifieds. We don't have those problems any more.
Money from sponsors or contributing members is used to offset our website and forum and domains and servers cost. It's not cheap. We partner with a premier host server organization that takes pride in quality of service, allows us our own immediate access to our servers and domains, is available to us 24x7 for support, and actually speaks the English language. This is a far cry from a cheap ineffective bottom-of-the-barrel hosting service like Go-Daddy. It goes beyond just hardware as we hire people to maintain, support, and care for our systems 24x7, write code as need be, and take care of accounting and bookkeeping. As a result, we have an excellent online track record with almost zero down time. This is to keep the Trad Gang house in good shape and always ready for your posting and archival reading. This is more than necessary for our upcoming conversion migration, where we'll need three servers instead of two. Quality computing, technicians, and internet horsepower ain't cheap.
Terry and I, and the other great Trad Gang folks that are behind the scenes keeping the site going have other lives. Trad Gang isn't all we do in life - we have jobs, families, outside obligations and distractions. We do make Trad Gang a priority, but that can go only so far. Please have patience as we do our best in an instant gratification world.
Again, keep foremost in mind that when you use Trad Gang, you use it for FREE. We make it available at no charge, no service fee, nada. That's the way it should be and the way it will be. Period. Whether or not you wish to contribute to our efforts has absolutely no bearing on your use of Trad Gang. We understand. Trad Gang is your cyber camp, your community, your friends. Don't get more better'n that, I'd think. That's all that matters. Terry and I will do whatever we need to do to keep the Trad Gang campfire burning 'til we croak and can hopefully hand it over to a qualified next generation.
Everyone does a great job and we appreciate it!!
Yes, I agree with the above. Thank You!
Alex

I contibute to help TradGang and will continue to do so.
Hi Terry/Rob,
Just a side note that came up in thought last night. My buddy was looking for a good, high quality filet knife, for small/medium size fish. I really trust the feedback I get from members here on products and of course since this was an off topic request, I never put in on the PowWow. It would be a benefit to have a forum to ask for 'hunting related products' reviews (like binoculars, packs, clothes, knives, etc.) that our collective membership would do a much better job of providing accurate assessment versus googling for on-line reviews. Lot's on your plate, I know, but just putting this out there for consideration.
Ray,
We do have a Product Review forum...its located above the "recipies, smokers, grilling...." forum in the main forum list.
My bad, thanks Tony.
